I've had my Learner license for more than three years now (been replaced as many times as well!) but I've probably been behind the wheel for less than 2-3 hours all together. I spent more time driving illegally with my high school friends before I got a license........
I have no motivation to learn to drive, since we have out of the world traffic and parking problems, and public transport is ALMOST as reliable as driving yourself. I always manage to car pool with someone for other things, or walk everywhere else.
Anyhow, now that some law changes may be taking place regarding raising the eligibility age for a Full license, I've sort of set out a nonchalant goal to get behind the wheel more often. On the other hand, if I wait 4 more years to be 25 I can skip the secondary driving stage and get a Full license straight away.....
Please share your stories about avoiding getting behind the wheel... Am I the only one out there who doesn't care to drive? |

I live in Auckland, New Zealand - I think the way conveniences are set up here it is possible to walk to most places, where as in the States that's not really the case? |

Oh, well, good. Now I don't have to worry. And, now I understand where you're coming from. When I lived in Auckland, I didn't bother with a car even though I do drive here. I walked almost everywhere 'cause I could.
You're right, for the most part it's not feasible to do without a car here in most places. The distances between work/school and home can be as much as 60 miles here in Texas.

I think it depends where you live in the states. I knew a guy from NY who never had a license. He moved to Virginia realized that public transportation there sucks and finally got his license at 36. I would die without my car here in Podunk, TX. I have to drive 1 1/2 to just go to a real mall!! |

Yes, I know many grownups in NYC that do not drive and don't feel the need to. Until they move away.
I grew up in Texas and now live in L.A. Nuff sed. |

Rosyface,
Get it! It gets harder as you get older. I finally got it..at 50! I've had my learners since 30. Proscrastination is my middle name. Thing is, I had no fear at 30 when i drove around. Now, the biggest thing I had to overcome was fear. So glad I got it & don't rely on DH to take me places..still don't like driving though. What pushed me was moving to the burbs and having to drive to get milk! |

I am still learning to drive Failed twice But then again, I'm in Singapore with all the public transport available and the really expensive cars/road taxes so chances of me really driving after I pass is really slim *sigh* |

I quit driving when I moved downtown and never looked back. I still own a car but keep it in storage and my license is long expired. Subsequently I am a good ten pounds or so lighter than when I drove. |

I couldn't WAIT to be able to drive a car! I have wanted to drive since I was about 10 years old and I would actually save my lunch money thinking I could buy a car when I turned 18. My father used to let my brother and I drive the car when we went to my grandmother's farm down in Maryland, and we were quite young then.
Now, I own 3 classic cars, a Chrysler 300 Touring Model, a van, 3 Harley Davidson motorcycles, a Motorhome and a dragster!!! The MORE I can drive the BETTER I like it! It is obviously one of the passions in my life.
Here is a photo of me starting a drag racing run up in Bakersfield, California. This car goes from a dead stop to 135 miles per hour in under 10 seconds, and if you look closely you can see me "smiling" inside the helmet!!

Whenever I'm without a car, which is rare, I panic. I've been driving since I was 13 and I got a license on my 16th birthday. Of course, you understand, that's only been a very few years ago. |

I have a British licence but have never driven on my own.... and now am all rusted. Has been on my "to do list" for a long long time. I;m fortunate enough that I live in Boston with very good public transport but I know that sooner or later I'll have to take the plunge. BBBrrr, it's cold! |

YIKES, Boston! That's where I really learned defensive driving. |

ROFL!!!
Love it though! Boston, I mean, not the defensive driving. Mind you, drivers are sooooo much nicer to pedestrians here than in Europe. I keep having narrow escapes whenever I go back. |

I am yet to pass my driving test , I failed miserably 6 years ago and keep meaning to learn, what stops me is that I don't really need to have a car and I don't think it is worth paying for car + tax + insurance + MOT etc to have it sat on the drive. |

Depends on the state or the part of the state you live in.
In Kansas the "mall" in the city (6th largest in the state lol) I lived in had a grocery store and lumber store. Technically the town I live in here has a "mall" too. I just complain bitterly about it since I got so spoiled living in Richmond. To go to a mall I enjoy shopping at I have to drive to Austin which is about 1.5 hours away. I had to drive an hour in Kansas. In Richmond I had like 5 malls to shop at |

I have my license but I don't much care for driving - too many maniacs on the road who DON'T FOLLOW THE DAMN RULES - it's maddening. I lived in the city in Chicago and gave up my car and loved it. I got all around with public transport, a lot of walking and cabs. It was fantastic.
Then, I went back to Louisiana and a car. Blah. Now, I live in Baltimore and only drive to the grocery store, Amtrak station and the airport - for the most part. Occasionally, I go elsewhere but not, if I can help it. I've even started ordering my pet food online to avoid the 1/2 drive to the specialty pet shop!
Needless to say, the fact that I drive a '99 Mazda Protegé doesn't faze me at all. I'm not a car fanatic and the only thing I care about it is that it runs, is reliable and sports my cat scratch seat covers and gives me a place to stick my stuffed Grommitt doll. |
