hi, i've posted under the hana elite flat iron thread..but thought i'd start a new thread just for flat iron techniques.
i'm a complete newbie at flat ironing...these are some of my questions:
A. i don't use any lab made ingredients so i am having trouble deciding what to use for heat protection for flat ironing my hair...on the hana elite thread some women said they used oils (like argan or jojoba) instead of a silicone heat protector serum (which, of course, i can't use)...but the fellow i spoke to where i purchased my hana elie from said that in his salon he recommends people use 'nothing' rather than oils before they flat iron since the heat on the oil can be more damaging to hair than just applying the heat to 'naked' hair. Any experience with using oils for heat protection?
B. it seems to be a consensus that drying hair completely before flat ironing is less damaging to the hair than flat ironing it damp...does anyone flat iron there hair damp..if so what are the results?
C. when i flat iron my hair with a slight turn under (which is the look i want) it is totally straight the next day and i would have to flat iron it again to get the slight turn under..which i've heard is not good for your hair.....AnnieR on the hanna elite thread said that she rolls her hair or twist her hair on her head at night...most days...and only flat irons on weekends or to do minor touch ups during the week. What are other folks techniques for using their flat irons...how often do you use yours...have you experienced any damage from using them too frequently or too hot?
(Thanks again AnnieR for your responses on the hana elite thread) |

1 Use infrequently, not everyday!
2 Use GHD brand.
3 Use Kerastase Nectar Thermique as a heat protectant. Expensive but you only use a tiny amount so it last a long time. |

Try putting in some large size rollers for a couple of minutes, it really fixes that flat straight look. |

secretly, do you do this directly after you flat iron to add a bit of volume or are you talking about the next day? I've recently started flat ironing my hair so am looking for all the tips I can get! |

I have bleached blonde hair and I tend to wash my hair every other night. I put serum in my hair as soon as I get out of the shower - I use a brand here in Australia called Organix - I mix equal parts of their Coconut Serum and their Keratin serum - I've experimented with this and it's what works best for me... I go to bed with it wet, tying it back and when I wake up my hair has dried and is super soft and shiny.
I flat-iron with my GHD most mornings after washing the night before -- sometimes I just leave it all wavy - I have fairly straight hair anyway but going to bed with it wet and tied back gives it lovely soft 'beach waves' - anyhoo so I flat iron and I like the slight curled under look too - it doesnt suit me to be totally poker-straight. The following morning I let the GHD heat up but then I turn it off and just tidy up the straightening and the curl under. I dont really get split ends or particularly dry ends doing this. Despite having long bleached hair it's in fairly good condition as I use Adveda Damage Remedy Treatment most times when I wash my hair and try to use a keratin treatment once a week. I've also been taking MSM powder for about 1.5 years and have found my hair in better condition from this. I take a bunch of other supplements as well as fish/salmon oil and have for about 15 years. |
