Basically, I am now searching a product can unclog pores and I have done a little search and found that BHA is good to unclog pores!
I have search that many recommend IS Clinical, but it's too expensive for me! Also, there are high rave of PSF pumpkin mask, but i want to find a BHA product for daily use, so mask is not convenience for daily use!

I'm using Dermalogica's Gentle Cream Exfoliant as a mask and area treatment on a daily or every two day basis. It is definitely working for me. I am offsetting any dryness by using I Feel Pretty Healing Serum.

Salicylic acid (BHA) in a cleanser really doesn't do any exfoliating. The pH of cleansers is generally too high for the BHA to work (it needs a pH of 3.4 or lower) - and BHA really has to be left on the skin for at least 30 minutes in order to have maximum effectiveness as an exfoliant. So I definitely recommend a 'leave-on' product.

hi, kim
so do you think a BHA mask is better than a cleanser?

Not Kim but I hope you don't mind me answering. But yes, it is better to do a mask than a cleanser. As Kim said above BHA needs time to work, so washing it off with result in little benefit.

From my personal experience I think this is true. I (in my youth XD) used to use a BHA cleanser. That did nothing to clear up my skin. Now that I am using a BHA/AHA mask, my skin is clearing up. No pimples today!

Ideally, BHA is put on the skin, left for 30 minutes before applying anything else, then additional products are applied. You don't wash the BHA off - it WILL continue to work over time. So while a mask may be better than a cleanser, it's still not ideal. And I do not believe that an aspirin mask provides the same level of benefits or exfoliation as real BHA.

So I think a BHA liquid, lotion, or cream is best.

For AHA's it depends upon the strength. Again, the amount of available acid id dependent upon the pH of the product. If you use a cleanser with 10% AHA and the pH of the product is high, then you're only getting a fraction of that acid value. Most cleansers have higher pH's - so you're not getting too much benefit from the AHA. Those with more sensitive skin may find that using a cleanser with 10% AHA causes their skin to become dry - but is that due to the AHA, the high pH of the cleanser, or other ingredients? It's hard to say.

But high % AHA's with low pH's can be left on for short periods of time & still show results (peels are examples of that).

I learned a lot from this post. I think you can also buy some BHA product in the grocery store, like loreal or nutrogena. They are pretty good and not that expensive. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

As far as I know, the BHA products that are found in the grocery/drug stores do not have the proper pH for exfoliation - and they often contain other harsh ingredients like menthol, camphor, peppermint, etc - things that harm the acid mantle barrier of the skin & can actually increase acne due to irritation.

I would check the ingredient list. And also see if you can find the pH of the product. If it's not listed on the bottle, try looking on drugstore.com, sometimes they have that info. If it's not there, you can email the company & ask - or just buy some testing strips & test it yourself.

If the pH isn't 3.4 or lower, it's not going to do much (if any) exfoliating.

If you'd like to PM me, I can discuss it with you, but I can't discuss it on the board since I sell those types of products.
