I'm serious, it seems like 99 out of 100 perfumes on the market today have some sort of musky base to them. So, even perfumes that smell good to me in the beginning, as soon as that musky base comes through they kill me--- instant migraine/nausea. But what I don't get is, why musk??? Why is it so prevalent? It seems so random to me. |

Both musk and florals affect me the same way! |

I think it is because musk is a feromon, or something like that? ![Question](images/smiles/question.gif) |

The smell of musk makes me want to throw up. I run in the opposite direction when I start to smell it on someone. (I need an emoticon that's holding its nose). |

I know. I really really really really don't get it! These are supposed to make people smell good? To me they just smell like Pepe Le Pew. I'm very much a scent snob though and have a very sensitive nose. Smells bother me a lot. The things that make me usually hold my breath and run the other way are people smoking, BBQ's, Incense , Smoke from fireplaces, and people drenched in musky perfume.
I just don't get why people would even want to smell strong scents, especially ones that smell so artificial. Neutral and subtle smells are what smells good to me. The lack of a scent is what smells clean to me, not pungent perfumes and fragrances and artificial lemon sprays. A forest smells wonderful, a flower smells wonderful. A skunk doesn't, and neither do these people! |

Ah, but musk smells great on me. It's the flowers that smell dreadful! (I must have seriously skewed body chemistry.) ![Embarassed](images/smiles/redface.gif) |

I was skeered to say I like musk. Infact I love musk. Not too strong & I burn incense go on say it. You just knew I was weird. |

Musk (like amber) is one of those notes you find in a lot of fragrances because it tends to be a good "base"--it sticks around on your skin for a longer time than more ephemeral notes (like citrus) and doesn't steal the show. |

This is why I don't have any perfumes.. They all give me headaches. I prefer a body spray that has EOs, and bontanical fragrance oils instead. But they don't last that long. ![Sad](images/smiles/sad.gif) |

Almost anything other than a light citrus scent will hit me smack! between the eyes--feels like a spike. Then, the migraine & nausea...then I start to taste the scent...then the scent starts just oozing from all my pores and I can't wash it off. Misery.
All of this is from just smelling it on someone else--not even putting any on myself.

Same here Ari--- I take my life into my own hands walking by the perfume counter in the department store, to say NOTHING of going into Victoria's Secret!!!!! Right now I've got 3 perfumes I can actually wear with ay kind of regularity: Serendipity 3 (No musk!!!!), Baby Bee (bring the solid scent back, Burt!!!), and Candy's Lavender Silk spray. I guess I should consider myself lucky that I at least have these 3... I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person out there who can't stand musk! |

Totally agree. I know the reason why they need musk but I hate the smell. |

Oh my gosh I am so happy to see that I'm not crazy ! I get sick as soon as I walk by the perfume counter at the dept. store! What musk-free, not too strong scents are you ladies wearing that you can tolerate?? I was using Kai for a bit, but even that got too strong for me after awhile... ![Confused](images/smiles/confused.gif) |

I can't handle the scent of musk either and so spend a lot of time searching for perfumes I can wear. Someone on the forum recently recommended a website for samples: luckyscents...thank-you!
I have been trying lots of different fragrances.
If you like florals..without musk..my favorites so far are (not necessarily in this order)
1. Kai
2. Yosh Han Whiteflower
3. Monyette
4. Yosh Han Untitled #1
I'm also loving Serendipitous (thanks liz!) |

Add me to the list of musk haters (floral and citrus too). I too get an instant migraine - I liken such scents to cigarette smoke - another instant migraine trigger for me. It's like the scent gets stuck in my nose, continuing to nauseate me.
I prefer to use a lightly scented shower gel and lotion. Usually this keeps the scent light enough for me to handle.
I am going to order a sample of the Serendipity Liz recommended. We seem to have similar noses. |

I'm also the same way Arielle. It just doesn't feel healthy as well. All those chemicals, phthalates and carcinogens etc.
I've read that many of the same chemicals used in cigarettes are put into perfumes. Over 600 chemicals can be used in one perfume, a lot of which are carcinogenic. The fragrance industry is unregulated. At least with people smoking I can see the cig in their hand and be warned not to get too close to them. The fragrance thing just hits me and sneaks up on me walking by them. I had to leave my friends in a movie once and go to the back because of a ladies overpowering fragrance in front of us giving me a pounding headache.

This is an interesting info site on chemical and fragrance sensitivities. http://allnaturalbeauty.us/chemicalsensitivities_jrussell.htm
Since I'm not alone here, how many of you live near a Sephora store? I can't even walk by Sephora without getting hit the smells of the chemical fragrances. I absolutely hate going inside and pay for it each time I do. The entire walls are packed with fragrances in the front of the store and it just reeks of it. I don't know how the employees handle it and none of the other customers seem to mind or notice it. Often I just think that it is better for me to just order anything I want from there online. There have been a few times when I knew what I wanted and tried to make it a very quick visit. Not breathing through my nose and just shallow breathing through my mouth. I almost didn't make it last time waiting in a long line and almost decided to just run out and forget buying anything.

I'm in a tricky position because loads of perfumes make me feel ill. I have stopped viiting my friend because she loves Muglers Angel which makes me feel sick. I also hate the fact that it is almost impossible to get unscented laundry powder/liquid and houshold cleaners. I like my man to smell of himself and I hate hate deodorants! (just WASH for crissakes!).
BUT... you try and take my tabac blond off me and I'll scratch you eyes out! |

saladgirl- you're quite welcome!
kandaboersma- your analogy of likening those scents to cigarette smoke was very accurate--- smoke is another migraine trigger for me as well. Before Ohio went smoke-free (THANK GOD!!!!), DH and I had to stop eating at a lot of restuarants because even if we sat in the non-smoking section, the smoke from the smoking section would give me a killer migraine. I really hope that you like Serendipitous. Keep in mind--- it's going to smell very simple in the bottle (I think the fact that it only has like 3 notes helps it not overwhelm sensitive ladies like us), but after a few minutes on your skin it will "bloom," while staying very soft and mild. It's a real treat for me, since I usually can't touch real perfumes!
jjb- I couldn't wear Kai either--- just too strong! (Although I was very thankful there was no musk involved, lol!) I really think that you might enjoy Serendipitous-- here's a link to a review I did of it recently:
http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=21318&highlight=serendipity
Over at makeup alley it gets great reviews for the scent, but people complain that it's way too light--- that was my first clue that it might work for sensitive ladies like me!
I'd also like to say how nice it's been for me to hear from other ladies who have problems with perfume--- I've gone my whole life thinking that I was the only one! (My sisters can bathe themselves in anything VS makes and not bat an eye! ) However, I'm also enjoying hearing from the ladies who actually can wear whatever they like--- it's nice to hear how the other half lives! ![Laughing](images/smiles/lol.gif) |

Musk, Patoulie (sp) and anything Avon sends me thru the roof. I also can't go into any store that sells lots of incense or popouri(sp).
I read someone's post saying they can't go into Sephora's because of all the perfume but yet that store doesn't bother me. Go figure. |

Another non-fan of musk here!
Seriously, isn't it so awkward when you meet someone in a professional setting and they smell like, essentially, pheremones...my old boss for example
BYRG, that's scary info about cigarette chemicals in perfumes! Maybe even scarier to think whenever you inhale a cigarette it's like taking a big strong whiff of burning musky perfume straight into your lungs...ick! |
