Erase painful memories?:
http://www.nature.com/news/2007/070305/pf/070305-17_pf.html

I can totally see how a drug like that could become abused once fully developed...but this definitely is an interesting find.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is my absolute favorite movie. I made my boyfriend watch it once so that when we fight and I always, always end up yelling "I wish I could eternally sunshine you right out of my mind!!" he knew what I was talking about. Seriously. Sign me up.
Is this something I can sign up for? Who do I email? Wink

I saw the movie and thought yes, it would be nice to forget certain things. To erase the memory would erase the pain, but I think something like this is very dangerous. After all, it is our experience and the things that we draw from those experiences that makes us who we are and what we want out of life.

Well said. I wholeheartedly agree. Although there are some things I'm sure I would want to erase I know that they have shaped me into the person I am today and I like me. Everything happens for a reason even if we don't understand it. Pain and pleaure are both aspects of like. We gotta take the good with the bad sometimes. Plus what happens if something goes worng and the wrong memories get erased! Shock Wouldn't want to mess around with that kind of stuff personally.

That movie was a bit hard to follow for me. I wouldn't personally want to forget things b/c I learned from my mistakes. Now I do wish to own a time travel machine though so I can go back in time and never met my ex-husband.

I love Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I feel that the whole message of the movie is that the two characters caused themselves more pain by erasing their memories since knowing each other created a large part of themselves. Without knowing each other, even though their relationship ended badly, they weren't whole. I think it works against that whole idealistic attitude of finding the perfect mate-- so what if you aren't perfectly matched? That doesn't mean you weren't meant to be with each other, even if only for awhile.

Even though I would think about it, I don't think I'd sign up to erase my memories of certain people. The end result would probably be a naive little waif, ready for another person to push her around. Laughing

I agree and wasn't it interesting that they ended up finding each other again in the end? It was as if they needed to learn the lessons of that experience in order to move forward.

I love eternal sunshine too but I don't really think I'll want to erase any memories. No matter how bad, sometimes with time, even the worse memories change somehow. When I think back on things I thought were horrible and all once, now they are actually bitter-sweet and maybe in a few more years or more those memories will actually be funny. Who knows what will happen right haha Smile

I have this - it's called ADHD and my negative memories are distantly-removed only serving as a point of reference. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy and know they shaped me; however, it was those very experiences that made me decide whether I wanted to continue being affected by them or change. I opted to change and always seek happiness so now I am a practicing hedonist. Smile

I quite love this movie and found it to be an intimate and absorbing concept to consider... that no matter how devastating and painful a memory, erasing it and the connections to that memory will not not alter the outcome much. That erasing the mind is one thing, but that erasing the heart is another thing altogether as erasing the mind/memory connection does not necessarily alter the heart connection and the propensity for one to be drawn to the same people or circumstances. Clementine and Joel still found their way to each other; Kirsten Dunst's character was still drawn to Tom Wilkenson's character. It reminded me of the saying, "The heart has its reasons that reason does not know..." or "The heart is treacherous, who can know it?", a powerful, yet somewhat mysterious element that is difficult or maybe even impossible to control.
