Okay -
So we have a big wall plaque at work that commemorates years of service by employee.
The plaque has 4 columns with the headings -
"5 Years", "10 Years", "15 Years", 20 Years" at the top (the company will be 20 years old in December)
Then below each column are the little plates that have the employee's name and "date" on them.
My question - should the date under the employee's name be their date of hire, or the date they reached the milestone? The plate looks like this:
JOHN SMITH
04/02
Now, would you think that date would be his date of hire or the date he reached his anniversary?
I did it one way - but I'm not telling yet which way I did it, but if you wouldn't do it the way I did, then you're WRONG!!! Just kidding!

Maria, After that little gem of a last sentence, you really think some brave soul is gonna come along and give you an answer? Noooooo
But this wigged-out maniac WILL - It's supposed to be the anniversary date!
I'm better now. Thanks for asking.

I, personally, would put the date that they were hired. I think it just shows how long they have been loyal to the company. |

agree to date of hire though even with the milestone date, working it backwards, you would also arrived at the join date. |

Ari, I love you.....Everyone else you are WRONG!!! No, just kidding....I did it by the anniversary date - now mind you the plaque has been up since last July and just NOW the company owner looked at it and was "confused". I had checked with the company I ordered it from and the guy said that typically you'd put the date the "event" happened (i.e. the month they reached the milestone) so that's what I went with...then, I asked some people, and it was a mixed answer, so I started second guessing myself...then of all things, my husband disagreed with me (the lousy traitor) so that's how I landed here....Ari, we're outnumbered on this thread!!!!!

You, me and the guy that does it for a living.
It IS interesting that there are different ways of looking at it, though.
Ari
p.s. Maria, if it makes you feel any better, I was just looking at an old railroad watch and fob my grandfather received at retirement. It gives his name and the inscription "In appreciation of 35 years of dedicated service. July 16, 1969" That was when he retired. |
