Does it start coming out when you wash it? I get a good 10-15 hairs leaving me each time I do this (every 4 days, though not always) and I am getting a bit freaked out because this hasn't happened before. I used to have very long hair, but chopped it ALL off last January (2006) and have not had it cut since (trimmed, but I'm letting it grow).
I can't remember my hair coming out like this before. Is it because my hair is getting long again? I'm a bit older? More importantly, IS THIS SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT? I've checked with others and they report the same thing, but it's only because of hair growing, they said.
So in 50 washes, will I still have my hair? |

I dont think its anything to worry about, I seem to remember reading that on average you lose 50-100 hairs a day. Its a natural shedding process just like an animal. I have short hair and I lose a lot when I brush or wash, last I checked my hair was still there! |

This happens to me too! You will still have hair. I had a super short pixie cut for awhile and rarely had any hair fall out. Now that I've grown it out to a bob, I'm definitely seeing more hair coming out. Before the pixie cut my hair was chest length and the hair shed even more. I don't know why this happens but you are not alone! |

i used to have short hair when i was younger and i hardly have any problem with losing hair. but when i kept long hair (longest ever is around bra length), i too notice that i tends to lose more hair now. by mere washing or even blow dry. and its really scary and really heartache.
so now i try to keep it long but around shoulder length. the brand of shampoo and conditional that you use plus the food that you take also affect your hair. |

I keep my hair anywhere between my shoulders and halfway down my back, and I alway lose lots of hair every time I shower, or even run my hands through my hair. My hair is pretty thick and it's always done that, so I don't worry. |

This is something that just boggles my mind also... I have extremely long hair these days.. it almost touches my butt. I trim it regularly though and I'm very proud of it.. however when I wash it, it looks like I lose A TON of hair. Like a medium sized furrball (sorry I have cats and I don't know what else to compare too).. but this has been the case for months and months and my hair is still as thick as ever. It must be magic.
It probably also looks like I lose more because each strand is very long? Versus, if they where each little strands, it wouldn't look like nearly so much hair.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Oh and at one point when I switched to using garnier long and strong.. I swear my hair wasn't falling out at all like before.. sooo weird.. I use Rusk Coral therapy now and it falls out again. Weird. |

It is normal to lose about a 100 strands of hair a day. When my hair gets too long it's starts breaking off. |

I totally noticed this as well myself. My hair wasn't very long ... just slightly past my shoulders, but I noticed so many strands seemed to be coming out when I brushed it. And it wasn't breaking off ... it looks like it was coming out at the root. I got slightly freaked too! But everyone told me it was normal. And it definitely wasn't more than the 100 strands so that had reassured me somewhat. Now that I've gotten a few inches cut off, I seem to shed a lot less now. |

I knew I'd find my answer here It's good to know that this thing is normal...perhaps before I cut my hair, I didn't notice this sort of thing, or it's just starting because I am growing it again. My hair is very, very healthy and alive on the day of washing, so I didn't think it was my shampoo (I switch them often anyway). I just was paranoid that I was losing my thick mane |

i think it should be consider normal to lose about 50-100 strands of hair per day for ladies with long hair.
previously when i have long rebond hair, i will use a big wide teeth comb to comb my hair. i notice that a big-wide teeth comb do a better job @ combing and i dont lose that much of hair either.
but ever since i have perm my hair, i have not comb it for ages. |

I found when I use lots of hair products like gel or hairspray my hair breaks more. |

I found that my hair was starting fall a lot more after I got it permanently straigntened But I have noticed in recent weeks it is starting to get back to normal.
PhoebesMeow, I also noticed my hair started to fall out less & got a whole lot stronger & even more shiny after using Garnier too Which was a bit odd considering I spent a whole heap of $$$ on Kerastase products prior to the Garnier which actually made my hair fall out a lot!! |

What Phoebe said, you just notice it more when it's long |

I've been told by a hairdress it is because we notice it more when hair is longer.
I went from long to medium short hair last year. When it was 'short' i never noticed the hair falling out. Now that I've grown it long again, I see hair everywhere.
I do think 'some' breakage is due to the length of the hair - like when it gets caught in zippers, under my purse strap, etc.

Hair has a life span. At any time, you have hairs that are just starting, hairs that are partway through their life span and hairs that are finished growing and ready to shed. That's why you lose hair every day. Of course, this doesn't apply to broken hairs. If you're seeing hairs that are full length and maybe have a little dot on the scalp end, that's a finished hair. If you see a lot of shorter pieces, that's breakage. |

after I take a shower it looks like I've left kittens in the drain (ugly kittens) -- my hair is really long and I shed like crazy. But I must grow it like crazy too, because it's still all there.... |

I think it's fine so long it's not dropping out in chunks Though if you want to minimise hair loss, then either don't brush when your hair is still wet or use a wide-gapped comb instead of a brush. |

Years ago when I had my hair permed (curly) my hair broke off just above the scalp in areas leaving a couple of patches of wierd stubble. |
