Hi moving from new zealand to australia.
Just wondering if all those spiders and snakes are in perth........ I hate spiders and i have been told they are deadly.
Im excitied but not used to creepy crawlies that can harm us.
Im excited about seeing kangaloos and koalas and living in a city. I live out in the countryside in a rural town of 1500 people in nz.
Any advice regarding perth?
What are some good sightseeing adventures?
Also help regarding renting and accomodation would be much appreciated. Very Happy

I just had to google this and came up with a Pest control site for descriptions of spiders in that area:

http://www.bestpest.com.au/pest-control-in-perth.html

I'm petrified of spiders and know how you feel. I'm sure that there are ways of keeping the little guys away from you. I know nothing else about Australia but the spider part had my quivering attention Anxious

Hi Marcia,

I can't help you with any specific info about Perth (other than I hear it's a beautiful city) having never been there myself but seriously I really don't think you have anything to worry about with snakes and spiders.

I've lived in three different states of Australia so far in both city and rural areas and I have only ever seen a snake twice in my life (outside of a zoo that is!) If you're living in the city the chances of seeing a snake would be pretty slim I think.

As for spiders there are a few nasty ones about but nothing a bit of bug spray won't fix Bad Grin. If you are really worried you can buy some surface spray and spray around all the doors and windows so they can't get in.

Another trick if you can handle it is to leave the daddy long legs spiders in the house. They are not scary looking and can't bite humans but are supposed to kill all the other bad spiders.

I'm sure you'll be fine Wink

Good luck with the move!

Funnily enough, my sister-in-law and brother-in-law are currently in the process of applying to emigrate to Adelaide from the UK.

According to a travel book I have at home the average temperature in Perth in November is a minimum of 14 to a max of 25 (celsius). December is 17-27. Nice summery weather Cool

Rainbow-listic they are just the average temperatures - I'm sure it can get much hotter! I live in Adelaide which has a similar sort of climate and it's not unusual to have temperatures in the high 30's sometimes even low 40's over summer.

Tasmania would be a safe bet if you don't like the heat. It's a really pretty place to visit and much closer to Antartica Wink

lorisu ~ i certainly cannot take it when the weather is too hot! in Singapore we are sunny thru' the year and most of the time i try to *hide* in aircon office, shopping malls etc.

and my skin turns real red, like a cook lobster lol.. just by mere exposing in the hot sun for few hours.

maybe i shall include [Tasmania] in my trip.

Very warm usually. I dont live in Perth, but my family live in WA, and I've spent a bit of time in Perth during summer. It is always balmy in Perth in Nov/Dec, it really does have one of the best climates in the world. There is generally always a sea breeze, and the nights are divine!
I love Perth, and if it was for my SO, I would move there tomorrow!

As for the spiders, I just accept them as part of life now, the only ones I kill on site are white-tails, now they are EVIL!! But not that common. Red backs generally hide, and you dont see them unless your looking under your house, in pot plants etc, they steer away from humans. White tails hunt in your house, they have no webs, and seek out other spiders....not to alarm you though - they've never killed anyone, just give you a nasty bite if you aggrevate one. Shock

At least you dont have to worry about funnel-web spiders, they are NASTY!! (but only in NSW....currently....)

ohh, forgot the snakes. In the time that I've been alive in Australia,I've only ever seen one snake alive, and a few dead ones on the road. In WA you need to look out for Jugites (spelt wrong, but that is how you say it), and tiger snakes. Fortunately for you, the snakes are really only found in bushy areas, so they wont seek you out. Honestly, I wouldn't worry, I am a country girl, and have no fear of them as I've never been confronted with them - the one I saw waas in our backyard in the country, hiding in a bush near our house, and probably would have run away if it wasn't for the resident cat which found it and was hissing!!!

Nothing to worry about!! Smile

As for renting - it's really hard in Perth at the moment as housing in severly underdone in the booming city. Last I heard they were conducting rent auctions to get the highest price from renters!! Oh hindsite!! If only we had of purchased when we thought about it years ago!!! The I may have been able to help you out.

Rottnest Island is a great sightseeing adventure, as is the south of WA, and the top north - so much to see really as WA is HUGE!!!

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice and support.

Daddy long legs never scare me but i have heard the whitetail spiders which are poisonous eat the daddy long legs.....

So housing is busy over there well that's good for my husband he is a builder - so hopefully picks up a good job.
maybe i should start checking out rental websites...... I'm excited about living in the big city!!!! I will also have to check out this rottnest island-very excited.
THANKS EVERYONE

No worries Marcia!!!

Funny that you should say whitetails eat daddy long legs, generally they leave them alone, as daddly long legs are more venimous - but daddy long legs really only eat insects like small flies and moths. Did try a small experiment years ago, and the spiders were at a stand-off(but that was when I was much younger and cruel....)

Red-backs are the only ones that have been known to really make you sick - but you can easily avoid them by being cautious (see above). Good luck

Redbacks aren't quite as venomous as people think. The only people badly affected by them are young children and possibly the elderly due to weakened immune systems. I was bitten by a redback when I was 15, taken to hospital but not even given an anti venom shot, just some anti nausea medication. I felt unwell for a couple of days but that was it.

Perth is an attractive city with a pleasant climate and a younger average population than most of the other capital cities in Australia. It is also clean, basically free of graffitti and has the best public transport system of any of the capital cities. Its crime rate is roughly the same as Melbourne and Sydney, per head of population, but slightly less than that of Adelaide. If you husband is in the building industry, then start making contacts now, that's the best way to get a decent house and avoid the current rent crush.

Because of the younger than average population there's a fair amount of good quality night life - Perth has some of the best nightclubs in Australia - plus lots of cafe's, bars, pubs and restaurants. There's also a thriving art scene.
