I remember watching this show as a kid with my parents when my mom or I picked it out at the video store years ago. I don't think she knew exactly what it was becaues I remember some nudity in it. I fell asleep so it didn't matter much. Anyway, I was thinking about making a night out of watching this again. I was planning on putting on my pink marabou babydoll slip with matching slippers and mixing a few martinies with my company. Do you think men would be bored? I was wondering what everyone thinks of the movie. Boring, fun or campy? I like the whole sixties theme...if you can recommend any other theme movies, that would be great as well! (I liked View from the Top and the one with Rene Zellweger playing the girl who wrote the advice book about men)

I have both these fab movies in my collection!
But they are two VERY different movies. Valley of the Dolls is more mainstream Hollywood, whereas Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is directed by Russ Meyer and is not the kind of movie I can imagine a parent watching with small children Laughing
Oh, and Beyond the Valley does feature a live performance by the wonderful Strawberry Alarm Clock...and lots of sex, drugs, violence, nudity and super groovy 60s clothes.

If you like Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, check out Faster Pussycat Kill Kill...it's also directed by Russ Meyer and another of my favourites, starring the awesome Tura Satana!

JMHO but I think it's possible that heterosexual men could find VOTD boring (don't want to offend or stereotype but...), so make sure you have lots of martini mix on hand!

If you want some '60s fluff, fun, and camp you may want to consider the Doris Day-Rock Hudson film, "Send Me No Flowers". Or any DD-RH collaborations for that matter.

Off the top of my head, edgier '60s mod classics are "Blow Up", "Darling", or "Georgy Girl" for example. May not be the best party material though -- probably better to stick with camp for that. Or what about late Bette Davis horror films like "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?"??? That could be good for a lot of laughs!

VOTD - boy that's a blast from the past! When I saw it 30 + years ago with my BF, he really seemed to like it. There is a cat fight in it and men seem to like them.

Patty Duke either won or was nominated for an academy award for her role. Sharon Tate plays the blond beauty. She was murdered several months later by the Manson group.

When it came out it was considered quite risque. I couldn't tell my mother what movie I was going to. Laughing It would be considered tame today. But I would not allow my children to watch it.

I agree Doris Day and Rock Hudson made classic '60's movies. I'd love to have her wardrobe from any of those movies! Forty years later and you'd still look like a million!

Thanks alot for your recommendations! Smile
I was searching a few of the mentioned movies on ebay- Pussycat Kill Kill was more expensive and harder to find than I anticipated, more so than Valley of the dolls anyway but I'm determined to see it along with the other ones mentioned. I don't know much about movies from that time so I appreciate the suggestions. I don't think I'll get a better deal in the store because Valley of the Dolls was $40 in Future shop so off to Ebay I go again.
