Hi everyone! I finally got a chance to see a new Derm today for what I believe is a nasty case of dermatitis and he said that he thinks I have something called "Polymorphic Light Eruption" instead... I looked it up and I really don't think it's what is causing my itchy, bumpy skin, but what do I know! I am definitely sensitive to sunlight, but I also see the same type of reaction when I try some new products, from dry/windy conditions, etc... Just thought I'd see if anyone here has heard of it or experienced it before? Thanks! |

My mum was diagnosed with this by her dermatologist a few years ago. Everytime she spent an extended period of time in the sun her skin would become unbearably itchy, and bumps as you say. She's end up scratching so mcuh her skin would weep.
I can't remember the name of the tablets but her doctor prescribed her medication that had to be taken a week or so before she goes on holiday to help the condition. |

Thanks for your info! Did she ever experience the rash on any other occasion? Oh, and did she get it only on her face? I don't really have trouble anywhere other than my face. |

jjb, she seemed to suffer most with it on her legs and arms but not as severely on her face. It definitely effects her more when she is in the sun. Some people also call it 'prickly heat'. I just googled it and it appears that Polymorphic Light Eruption is caused by sunlight, but my mother visited New York months ago when it was snowing there and it seems that she is sensitive to any extreme weather conditions as her skin flared up there aswell. |

Hi,
I have this too. I think that it's more of a general condition than being exposed to sunlight. Perhaps there's a drying effect because wind/cold weather/cosmetics triggers it. I have it on my face/neck/arms... It's miserable. I apply cortisone creams but it's not a good solution at all. If anybody has a good solution, please do share. |

Were the tablets beta-carotene? |

Interesting that it isn't just sunlight! I notice that I have rashes from dry/cold conditions like Sel's mom does and sometimes cosmetics/lotions as well. The only thing that makes me wonder is the fact that I really only have the rashes on my face...
My new derm prescribed something called Elidel for the rashes I have - it's supposed to be for eczema. Although it does seem to be reducing the severity of the rashes, so far it makes my skin feel like it's slightly burned and it's still a bit itchy. He also told me to take Claritin everyday to try and prevent flareups. I'm not convinced yet that this will all do the trick yet... and I'm not so sure that I have PMLE since only my face it affected! Of course, it's only bee 2 days, so only time will tell! |

When I used to live in Central America, the locals would SWEAR it came from eating citrus and sun together. no idea if that has any validity whatsoever, but something to consider. |

That's an interesting one! I do like grapefruit on occasion - I'll have to pay attention next time and see if anything happens! |

I asked my mother and she said that the tablets were actually a course of steroid tablets. She used to be given a course to take for around a week before she went on holiday and then take them whilst she was away. We live in the UK, so sun isn't much of a problem on a daily basis!
It's funny you should mention citrus fruits. I haven't heard that they can cause sensitivity to the sun, but I do know that some citrus fruits, especially grapefruits can cause problems when taking many different kinds of prescription medications. |
