Ok, I've been wondering this for a long time and would really love to get some answers from people who don't stand to gain anything from this.

Skincare companies have been telling us for years that it is better to use products from the same line, because they are created to "work synergistically together".

Could someone please shed some light on this? I've noticed that my skin does react better when I use products from just one line, but maybe there is no real reason for this...?

Any comments / help would be much appreciated.

I am not very knowledgeable about exact ingredients and how or if they work well together, but the skincare specialists that I have come across do not suggest that using the whole line of one skincare line is always the best thing.

Just because one product from a specific line works well doesn't mean that others will--I guess it all depends on your skin and how your skin reacts to certain ingredients. Having said that, from reading this forum, I keep coming across words such as "stable" and "compatible" so I assume that some ingredients do not work well with others and we should be aware of this. I hope someone else can shed light on exactly what ingredients DON"T mix. Perhaps we're dealing mostly with actives? Anyways, I'm not sure I was much help but perhaps this will bump your question to the top of the forum and someone more knowledgeable can help you out.

I have not done a lot of trial and error with product lines, so I can't speak from personal experience. However, I have read Dr. Leslie Baumann's book (she's a dermatologist and skin care product researcher), and she feels that sticking with just one product line is a mistake. She claims that companies will have one or two very good products and then try to fill in others to make a complete line. She feels the best approach is to take the best from different product lines (and her book gives many recommendations).

That's a very good question. From what I read here most people mix and match between the different brands and so do I. I really want to hear from someone who is strongly against this and the rational.

I think it's another marketing ploy.

Use what you need for your skin and what works for you.

Whenever I used that adage my skin turned out to be a mess. Now, I just use what works.

I think it's a bunch of stuff that you have to stick to one line. I use a few different lines: PSF, DHC, Proactiv, Alba, Nivea, Dove... All these brands make up my current routine, and I'm very happy with my skin right now.

I agree with skincarefeak; just use what works!

I totally agree. I'm currently using products from multiple skin care lines.

I think it's a marketing ploy as well for customers to buy more and exclusively from them.
