At least always get your hair wet with tap water BEFORE swimming and always wear a swim cap. Your hair will soak in the fresh water and therefore won't soak in as much of the chlorinated water. (I assume it's a chlorinated pool you are swimming in? I sure wish there were more ozonated pools around- those are the best (chlorine and bromine free.))

And I would also add a bit of conditioner to your hair- that will help protect it as well after you dampen it with fresh water.

I don't know what country you're in, but there are "swimmer shampoos" here in Canada. I believe they neutralize the harmful chemicals if you shampoo after swimming. I would try asking a hair salon or stylist where you could find that type of product in your area. When my blonde children were younger, and in the pool all the time, we used the shampoo, and it was great. Poool chemicals can even give natural blondes a slight green tint, if you're in the water a lot! Very Happy

Usually swimming shampoos will have a chelating agent in them (which removes the chemicals). Some can be pretty harsh- I know what you mean. I grew up with greenish straw like hair (I was a year round swimmer). Of course when I was a kid I didn't take that much care in protecting my hair so I didn't start wetting it before I swam until high school. And for a few years I cut my hair boy short and didn't wear a swim cap b/c I got so tired of them. Boy, did I have interesting hair from that...

Anyway, try checking into gentle chelating agent ingredients. I know that Aubrey Organics makes a swimmer's shampoo and I have to admit, I've never tried it (I only discovered it a couple of years ago long after I stopped swimming all of the time). You might want to try it and see how it makes your hair feel. The gentlest "conventional" shampoo with chelating agents I can think of is Malibu Well Water Action Shampoo and Conditioner.
