I'm thinking of going to Thailand for vacation on spring break. Has anybody been there? What are the places I should check out? Any feedback would be much appreciated |

my parents have gone many times...they usually go to wah-hin and pucket....I prolly spelled those wrong. They like the beach and golfing so they stayed in resorts...they aren't fans of bangkok, too busy for them. |

We went last year and went to Koh Samui and Ko Phangan, two islands. To be honest, as nice as they are if I were going again I'd go to Ko Phi Phi and Phuket, on the other side. There's nothing wrong with the places we went but they are quite commercial. Bangkok is definitley worth a visit, as is Chaing Mai, north of Bangkok. From Chaing Mai you can do a trek up into the hills and spend the night with one of the tribes up there. No water, electric or anything - but a great adventure! Hoope this helps! |

I agree with Rachael. Chiang Mai is definitely a place you should check out. If you love beaches, Phuket is a good place. But if you have limited time, check out Hua Hin as it's only about 2 hours drive from Bangkok. |

That's funny, I was just thinking about posting the same topic. I am also going to Thailand, and also Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, for two months. If anyone would be interested in answering some detailed questions about SE Asia, I would sure appreciate a PM. |

I'm from Thailand, and I'd say I've been to most islands in Thailand (there are over 100 islands). Honestly, Koh Phi Phi and Phuket are much more commercial and touristic than Koh Pangan or Koh Samui. The only difference is Phi Phi and Phuket are a lot more expensive and full of old sex tourists walking around with young Thai girls! However, the sea in Phi Phi area is much nicer...nicer water and great for scuba diving if you love corals! Pai is a small valley town in the North and very charming (yet increasingly commercial). It's definitely one of my most favorite places to visit in Thailand. |

Prices vary a lot and it really depends on the place (in a hotel or just a little shop on the street). My favourite is called DNV Spa and it is just a few minutes walk from BTS and prices are reasonable with quality service (plus I LOVE the environment). You can check their prices at http://www.divana-dvn.com/dvn/home.html .
You can have a 2-hour treatment for around US$100. If you're interested, I can tell you where you can download a discount coupon. I visited them for the first time in Dec 2005 but when I revisited them in June this year, the receptionist recognized me! What a surprise!
Let's Relax is another recommendable spa centre. http://www.bloomingspa.com/index.php
You can see their spa package is only around 2000 Baht for a nearly 3-hour treatment. I'll definitely try it next time I go to Bangkok.
I personally do not prefer cheaper shops for aromatherapy massage because of hygiene and privacy concerns. But it should be ok for Thai massage. |

Forgot to mention about getting a thai massage! They're fantastic! Depending where you go you can get one for around 6GBP. Marnie, I will PM you as I travelled to all the places you've mentioned, last year. |

It's very, very different. For a start, you wear clothes...they give you pajama-type things to wear. Lots of twisting and stretching and pressing. They should start off by washing/scrubbing your feet. Then you lie on your back and they spend a lot of time on your feet and legs, then you lie on your front and they work on your back, maybe crawl around on top of you and dig their elbows in if you're lucky Then they sit you up and work on your shoulders, neck, head. After that they finish up with twists and stretches, sometimes lift you up by your head (not kidding )
Best to have 2 hrs, as 1 hr is really not time to do enough different moves, plus you don't get so much work on your shoulders.
Also, the thai-style foot massages are definitely worth trying. My feet feel amazing afterwards.
And...when choosing your hotel in Bangkok, it's best to be close to a BTS station (the overhead train), as Bangkok traffic can be hell and if you've only got a couple days you don't want to spend hours in traffic jams. |

I like Phi Phi Island so much. You can see it in "The Beach" movie. Don't miss to go there. |

Krabi is great as a beach getaway and I heard the spa massages there aren't bad too For shopping it's definately Bangkok! Go to the night markets or weekend markets where'll you can find tons of clothes/accessories! Warning though, wear light clothing when shopping in those night/weekend markets as the space is limited and when you add on the weather and the crowd = hot! |

There is an awesome outdoor market in Bangkok, which you should check out even if you don't plan to buy anything. It's the biggest one there, and it's there on the weekends. They sell everything you can possibly imagine. |

People usually go to Bangkok for the cheap shopping bbut really, it's anything but. However, the markets are quite fun and you could combine City and Beach Resort in like 5 hours! Pattaya has an old town charm, and the red-light district that it is is interesting yet does not intrude that much. Fine for children in my opinion though you get to see white men with Thai women and their offspring, one of whom grabbed a piece of toast off my plate when we were having buffet breakfast at the WOodlands hotel. |

Thailand is a vast country with diverse cultures and so much to discover - Phuket, Koh Samui and Hua Hin are not great places to do so..! 'Ruined' by westerners looking for cheap thrills. If you're looking for beach, then islands off Krabi or Trang are good for the time of year you're going. But there's so much more to Thailand than beaches.
In terms of shopping, if you go to anywhere in Thailand, whether on the tourist circuit or off the beaten track or anywhere in between, you'll find plenty to choose from, and you could get 'bargains' - but watch out for the wash and weep!
BTW the weekend market in Bangkok is Chatuchak or Jatuchak or various other derivations of spelling. It's good, and vast (on over 50 acres) but can get very hot indeed. It's worth checking out the Suan Lum night bazaar..but be quick as it's threatened with closure soon. Some Bangkok tips http://www.telltaletravel.co.uk/tips/bangkok.html |

Hi daisylondon,
It seem like you know bkk a lot! How many times have you been there?
Don't forget to visit Grand Palace when you travel in bkk. Enjoy the night at Kaosan Road. The place is nearest Sa-nam-luang.
Don't worry about clothes because you can buy them there. It's very sheap.
Hope you have a great trip!! |
