I have never paid attention to the facial waters like Evian and Avéne Mineral Water Spray. But maybe I should? In her book "Skin Type Solution", Dr Leslie Baumann recommends those of us with dry skin to spray on facial water immediately before moisturizer.
Please tell me about your experiences with facial waters. Do you feel it's helpful? Any brand recommendations?
Btw, according to Baumann's skin type questionnaire, I am Dry, Resistant, Non-pigmented and Wrinkled (prone to wrinkles). DRNW is apparently the majority skin type in America and Northern Europe. |

Actually I hear Cameron Diaz uses Evian water when washing her face. And that the one time she didn't, she had a massive breakout.
I honestly think it's just what your skin is use to. My parents home has filtered watered so the water is soft, and that's what my skin is use to. When I moved in with my SO, the water was hard and made me breakout for the first week or so. |

Cameron Diaz breaks out pretty regularly...I don't think it's because she washed with tap water |

Yes, I started doing this when I came to the EDS Forum site and read about others recommending it - especially the raves for Avene thermal water in the favorites threads.
It does help with moisturizing for me - I have dry skin. It also helps save me $$ as the moisture on the face first helps product spread and I find I use less because of it.
Hope that helps.
I'm sad because CVS stopped carrying Avene and I like it much better -- seems like finer mist than the Roche-Posay spray CVS still carries. Probably will try Evian next... |

The other brand - Vichy has good spray water too. But personally I don't find any of them necessary. |

I stopped by Douglas Cosmeticswww.douglascosmetics.com today and they have a sale on the Evian fashion bottle sprays so I got one and will try it (also carry a 6-pack of the mini-Evians for a discount). I told the salesperson about my dismay that CVS no longer carries Avene and that the Roche-Posay seemed less fine a mist. The salesperson said the Evian has a fine mist so will see....
The spray is not necessary - sure - but I do find it makes a difference. Especially since I have very dry skin -- every extra bit of moisture I need
I also have a sample of Bioelements Power Peptide that comes in a mini-spray bottle that I will be refilling with my own concoctions when I use it up.... (maybe make some green and/or rooibos tea and use it topically as a spray - put some grapeseed extract in as "preservative" and antioxidant as well)... |

Me too, although every once in awhile I get real fancy and use a hydrosol of some sort instead to get some EO benefits. |

Well Kassy, I have to admit this spritzing, some mud masks, and bath salts are the extent of my DIYing.... |

Facial water seems to be a good idea. I think I will try Avéne because they sell it at my local pharmacy, and it's not too expensive here in Europe.
Dr Baumann recommends spraying water on face and neck before applying moisturizer, as the moisturizer will help trap the water on the skin, giving the skin a reservoir to pull from. According to her, this is important when the humidity is low.
Sounds sensible to me. |

Plus many facial waters contain ingredients like sulfur and selenium which help eliminate redness, excema, etc....a benefit you don't get from tap water (containing chlorine) or distilled water.
I ended up trying a Helichrysum Hydrosol instead, and just got it yesterday. |

Just wondering...I've been watching some Chinese/Taiwanese beauty programmes and the makeup artists and skincare experts always use something they call "makeup water". Is that the same as toners and those facial mists? |

I use La Roche Posay thermal water. I like it, it feels refreshing and it also helps cut down on irritation. However I have read that LRP and Avene have caused irritation for some. |

I think it's a good idea to hydrate your skin, yes, before "sealing it in" with a moisturizer, but wouldn't any purified water without chlorine or nasties work just as well?
And, for that matter, wouldn't anything work as a moisturizer? I've heard plastic surgeons tell patients to use Crisco to soften/moisturize!!! Those rascals!!!! |

Yes, most "clean" water will hydrate your skin if you put a "sealant" on it afterward. Otherwise, water can contribute to drying the skin further if you don't use something over it - due to the evaporation process. I kind of find the same true with topical hyaluronic acid serums, etc. (that's why I take HA internally instead).
Why does Crisco "work"?!? Because it has moisture-sealant properties...
The selling point of some thermal waters is they are known to contain minerals that help calm some skin conditions - e.g., reduce redness, etc.
Adding antioxidants, hydosols, teas made from water, etc. can enhance the properties of the water.
I do find using a mist before putting on moisturize helps (1) seal in more moisture; (2) spread the moisturizer easier; and (3) helps me use less product because I'm able to spread it more easily. |
