Holidays are so expensive this year

Is it just me or has the average holiday cost gone up in price a lot this last year? I have spent hours on the internet trying to find a good deal and there does not seem to be a lot out there... Maybe I am too picky... I have also called a few tour operators, and it was quite a negative experience; one tried to sell me this deal to the Maldives which seemed very reasonable, but I could hear alarm bells ringing and asked him to find out if there was any construction work going on and, in fact, there was extensive work going on there.

I also take great delight in checking every hotel I consider onwww.tripadvisor.com where you can find out the real truth from people who have been there and it goes a long way to show how little a star rating means.

I just wanted to share my experience and find out if anyone else is having the same problem and, of course, if anyone can recommend an oasis of serenity where I can get away from it all, I would google it instantly...

i want to go to California, but i check the fly ticket, it is too expensive!

I think they are adding the fuel taxes into the prices on top of the usual 15% increase in prices. There is a very real possibility that I will end up going nowhere.

yep this year is WAY more expensive than last year.

we all just buy tickets cos we've got our own accomodation and its about £600 or so Shock

whereas last year it was around 400.

iv heard quite a lot about timeshare too, and my friends going away and staying in a villa or soemthing cos her friends in the timeshare scheme. apparently theyr really good and cheap...but gotta be careful of the company ur dealing with

I think that the days of cheap travel are over, for now, unless you go to a destination during their off-season.

For instance, I know that flying round-trip into Fort Lauderdale during the summer is relatively cheap. The Marriott Hollywood Beach (Florida) is a great hotel right on the beach and the room rate is less than half what it is in January. Of course the big bummer is that it is hotter than Hell in South Florida in the summer. But, if you need to get away and relax by (or in) the pool, and you don't mind hot'n'humid (with some thundershowers mixed in), it is an option. Plus, alot of destinations are kinda nice in their off-season because they are not overrun with touristas.

I want to add my vote for tripadvisor. I drive across the country twice a year (Miami--Seattle Exclamation

). Tripadvisor really helps me avoid the stinky places! I just wish they had 'pet friendly' as a search category, as I travel with two big dogs and a parrot Confused

I'll second that. It's very helpful to get regular people's opinions. I try to leave info on any place we stay - hope everyone else will/does too so we all can benefit from it.

Speaking of animals and tripadvisor - I found quite a good deal for Le Grand Courlean in Tobago, but when I read on tripadvisor that the hotel staff were cruel to local stray puppies I knew straight away that it was not the resort for me.

I take every review with a pinch of salt, because it is subjective, but unfriendly staff and lack of cleanliness would make me think twice.

You really travel with a parrot?! That is so unusual, I love parrots, but I have heard that they can go through some difficult teenage years where they start to bite for no reason - is that right? How lovely that your parrot comes with you. With such a great selection of companions I am sure you have fun wherever you go.

Definitely higher this year, which is odd because last year we had a great Summer in the UK and if they want to encourage people to travel abroad then they need to drop the prices.

We ALWAYS check out Tripadvisor before we go anywhere, for instance last year we found what we thought was a great little boutique hotel in Palm Springs until I read Tripadvisor which said it was a gay hotel with 'clothing optional'! Fine you want that sort of thing, but not for us. Smile

That makes me happy for some reason, lol.

But I totally agree on rising costs of trips/ vacations. Before my last semester, I am planing to go to Mexico (Riviera Maya or Cancun or puerto vallarta) just to relax with my SO. Looking up prices last night, I almost fainted. I was looking to spend less than $1000 per person for 7 nights in an all inclusive resort. And while its still possible, it seems like every little price has gone up. I'm looking at places like travelocity.com and worryfree vacations, but it just seems that prices have gone up in general for everything. And for some reason it didn't click in my mind until the time I read this thread that gas prices are having a huge impact on the travel industry. Sad

Oh, so sad.

We are heading back to Oz for a holiday in the Whitsundays for a week. Still it is expensive:

Intl Air for him: US$750
Intl Air for me (free ticket) $250 (taxes/surcharges)
6 nights luxury condo $1400
+ car/before/airport hotels $450

$1425 per person without any meals etc.

YIKES.. but in fairness, it is our first "vacation" since Sep. 2003. Laughing

(I never count going HOME to oz as vaacation. Laughing

)

If you ain't going 'en familie' you could try couch surfing (google it). you get to stay for free in people's houses. My mate did it and said it was fab.

I'd do it but I don't travel though I thought of offering my couch anyway if I just get the mutt off it!
