| Need any ideas:) No matter what kind of salon you frequently visit.. nails, hair, makeup, anything. I need ideas in any area for a future opening that I'm planning. Do you like the lighting, layout? Colors? Services offered? Anything:) Thanks gals! |

| Hi Nikki! Are you opening a salon? How exciting!!! First of all, my preference is always for salons that offer me some kind of refreshing and unusual drink. For example, herbal lemonade, green tea, etc. That just makes the experience so luxurious for me! Next, when it comes to nails I prefer OPI colors (they last longer), but pleeeeease have a selection of peaches and neutrals like champagne--- I can't abide bright colors on my toes. Also when it comes to pedicures I ONLY go to places with whirlpool footbaths--- I don't like just putting my feet in a bowl of water. Getting a hand/arm/foot/leg massage while I get a pedicure is DEFINITELY a bonus too and will keep me coming back. Same with a good scalp massage when I'm getting shampooed. HTH! |

I've always liked neutral colors. Tans, reds, colors that warm things up and at the same time are relaxing. The salon I go to right now is small and has sort of a French/ coffee shop/retro feel to it. Wood floors, exposed brick on the wall, vintage hair accessories and ads. Very chic. I love the coziness of it.
I agree on the whirlpool for feetsies. And I would love it if my place would offer up some unique drinks. Right now I can choose from bottled water or coffee packets.
Also, I like books. Not with pictures of odd-duck hair cuts you'd never in one million years get. But cute do-able styles. With recent issues. 1998 was great but I want what's hip now.

I go to a new salon...well, I've be going there since March. The owner insists the staff call everyone by their first name. I like that. In my other salon, it was-go wash the lady with the red shirt. I like the personal touch of the new salon.
She also gives you a written list of the products they use. No pressure to buy, but just the list. I went back and bought the hairspray because I liked how it felt in my hair the next day. |

Drinks are nice, but the absolute best thing for me when visiting my hair salon is the head massage whilst my hair is being washed. I'd be prepared to pay someone to do that all day if I could!   |

Ditto!! A good head massage is awesome!! I also like salons that offer a very comfortable atmosphere. The one I used to go to had alot of rich wood furniture (nearly looked like antique pieces), warm colours on the walls and nice artwork. It wasn't very modern looking, which sometimes I think can look a bit sterile. |

Agreed with everyone on the scalp massage. I loooove that.
But, in all honesty, I'd typically just settle for a shampoo girl. So often they're backed up, and the stylist has to wash the customer's hair themselves. It mucks up the whole schedule. It's understandable. It happens at the best of salons. But well-ordered is always a huge plus in a salon.
In terms of decor, I'm fine with modern or luxurious. Just so long as it is well done and lovely. The salon I used to get highlights at (my colorist changed salons, so I went with her) was absolutely gorgeous, in a really offbeat way. It was mainly modern, but it had lots of ethereal, beautiful touches, like these intricate branches on the ceiling. It was just lovely. The one she switched to is very ordinary, IMO. All Pier 1 type accessories and those sheet mirrors just glued to the wall. Can't stand it. And I LOATHE bright colors in a salon. Muted colors are fine. Whites and black, also fine, as are dark, rich colors. But brights are hideous.
Another one of the MOST important things to me is the chair where you get your hair washed. I like the kind with a leg rest that comes up as they recline the seat. And your head just rests in the bowl with an indent, so there's no neck strain. I have short legs, and they kind of dangle uncomfortably in the regular chairs when I'm forced into odd positions. I assume those special chairs cost more, though. But, IMO, totally worth it.
The list of products things a previous poster mentioned is similar to what Aveda salons do. They have a little folding card checklist o all their products, and your stylist just checks off the ones he used on you. Genius.
In terms of products sold, I like a mix of standards and new brands I've never heard of and can't find elsewhere. And I am always a sucker for when they frame a magazine cutout next to the product where the product was mentioned in a magazine. (Again, they FRAME it, cutely for display, they don't just glue it on the wall next to it. Ugh. I hate this new salon I go to.)
I think tip envelopes and a box for them at the front is pretty much a necessity. I never want to hunt my colorist down when she's working on someone else to give her a tip.
The layout for the salons I go to is merchandise/receptionist in the front. Directly behind them is the cutting. Coloring is in the next room. And other services, like manicures, pedicures, waxing, facials, and microdermabrasian are in separate rooms. This works well, IMO. I would NEVER want to do color in the front, and be stuck under a dryer with my head covered in foil as people walked in and out. And other services like manicures, etc. are more spa-like, so should be done in a more private area. |

Yes, that's a good one too! The salon I go to has those chairs too and it makes it SOOO much more comfortable. Especially if you have to sit there for 10 minutes or so with a treatment in your hair. |
