A couple of weeks ago, I posted about the problems I was having with skin blemishes, left after the acne had gone down.

It was here: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?p=11841

The general issue seemed to be that this is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

In my case, the blemishes take months to go and are obvious.

More information about PIH is here: http://dermatology.about.com/cs/acnescars/a/acnescars.htm

"After an acne lesion has healed, it can leave a red or hyperpigmented mark on the skin. This is actually not a scar, but rather a post-inflammatory change. The redness or hyperpigmentation is seen as the skin goes through its healing and remodeling process, which takes approximately 6-12 months. If no more acne lesions develop in that area, the skin can heal normally. Any color change or skin defect still present after 1 year is considered to be a permanent defect or scar."

And also here: http://www.acne.com/c_physical.php

"First, some good news about the healing process. As an acne blemish heals, the inflamed area flattens, leaving behind a reddish spot. Though it may look like a scar, it’s actually a macule - the final stage of an acne lesion. Macules may last for up to six months, but leave no permanent scar.

The same holds true for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a darkening of the skin at the site of a healing acne lesion. Most prevalent in African-American, Asian and Latino populations, these spots can last up to 18 months - but may disappear more quickly if you stay out of the sun. Both macules and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are considered "pseudo-scarring" because they eventually disappear completely."

In the previous thread, the suggestions were:
Vitamin C +AHA (for exfoliation)
Vitamin C +E (for healing)
Jan Marini Bioclear AHA
SkinCeuticals Phyto+ -- http://www.skinceuticals.com/productItem.asp?productTypeID=4&productID=30
Cellex C Fade Away -- http://www.essentialdayspa.com/cellex-c1.htm

As I understand it the last two are whitening / fading products. Would they be suitable for PIH? I imagine these are also bleaching agents because they bleach the redness away?

I guess the thing is there are so many products out there; that it is best to pick one otherwise you could spend ages looking at them all?

Incidentally, I am in the UK. Looking round the chemist, there seems to be nothing like any of the above (a proper large chemist), so I guess Internet ordering maybe the thing.

I had previously seen a UK company at http://www.skinlight.co.uk/SL%20info.htm which seems good. Or I could just go for the Phyto+ that has a company in the UK at http://www.skinceuticals.co.uk/PhytoPlus.html

The other thing I don’t understand is that reading the description below, no mention is made of Vitamin C (or AHA), which I assumed from the other responses was essential to reduce and remove hyperpigmentation? Or are they all Vitamin C based?
“Phyto +
This botanical gel for hyperpigmentation is an advanced lightening formula combining four active ingredients to diminish discolorations and improve the overall health of the skin. Kojic acid and arbutin, natural alternatives to hydroquinone, work synergistically to help break up hyperpigmentation, while cucumber and thyme contain anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties to soothe red, irritated skin. Active ingredients are delivered in a hyaluronic acid base to hydrate as they help heal, calm, and improve the appearance of the skin. Phyto + can also be used to help reduce erythema and to maintain results following invasive cosmetic procedures.”
It is expensive though at £63 ($115) for 30 ml. If it works I will buy it, but would 30ml be enough? I do not have that much PIH, maybe four or five patches. The Skinlight one is £30 for 30 days.

I know this is a long post, and thanks all for helping again!

I hope that this information will be useful to other people too!

Wow. You've got a giant BRAIN machine man. nice summary. All I can say about all this is that, personally, adding the C serum to my routine (Retin-A and AHA cream) has been the only thing that really has helped remove hyperpigmentation. Even then, it still takes a few weeks for those darker spots to fade away completely. I think the lightening products you mention are great for lightening, the C will help prevent further hyperpigmentation by stopping free radical formation, the E will help make C more effective, the AHA will assist in cell turnover and brightening. I think the key is using more than one product (not what you wanted to hear I'm sure) but they all do different things. Consider it a full-out frontal assault on the hyperpigmentation. Smile

Along with thoes, I think a weekly mask treatment also helps with PIH.
I have couples of them and i have started using a mask and is helping.

I'm fully with Betterat40 regarding what she said. I get the impression that my skin does heal better because of the vitamin C I'm using.

Btw, take a look at Clinical Outcome of Topical Vitamin C Application for Treatment of Various Cutaneous Disorders. There is a section there on post-acne scars and vitamin C usage. HTH
