Earlier this spring I went through a spate of "must order samples" for several MMU's--Alima, Lumiere, Lauress, Jane Iredale, UGloGirl, and there may have been one or two others. And of course, I needed to try several colors and finishes for each. As a result, my makeup table looks like I'm planning to start my own mineral makeup company. I palmed a few off on my daughter, but I hated the idea of either wearing them (some were too pale and looked ashy, some too dark and looked like fake tan, some were glow-in-the-dark shiny, others cadaver matte, well, you get the idea.) I had an old empty MMU container with sifter and thought, What if I just threw them all together? None of them has actually irritated or caused me any skin problems, so why not?

I used a firm concealer brush to push the powder through the sifter and break up slight clumps, lidded it and shook for all I was worth. Amazingly, it's pretty darn good. Seems like the too-light cancels the too-dark, the too-yellow cancels the too-pink, and the too-matte tones down the too-shiny. Classic case of regression to the mean, I suppose. Of course, I couldn't reproduce it again, but I've got enough to last me for months.

You paid for it, you might as well use it! I am very fickle about cosmetics so I seldom reorder the same product anyway. Good for you for using it up and not just throwing it away.

What a great idea! I'm not going to try it with brands that irritated my skin, but definitely will use light/dark and pink/yellow to see if I can come up with something neutral.

That's smart. I should have done that too before I returned my BE mmu. I didn't like the two colors in the starter kit. Wonder if mix the two together would have worked for me.

great idea, thanks, flitcraft!

I just mixed 6 Alima samples and now have about half a full size. I'm waiting for new stock of Laura Mercier to try, and this should keep me going in the meantime without having to buy anything new.

That's great this worked out so well for you. I think it's a wonderful idea because I have several sample baggies and they're just sitting there... Rolling Eyes

Glad to hear I'm not the only one Laughing

Seriously, I do this all the time...tweaking the not so fabulous for me colors...mostly because I hate waste...but...it oddly seems to always produce something usable in the end Very Happy

The only drawback is when it turns out really, really nice and you can't reproduce it!

as long as i don't have a bad reaction to the formulation, I use these samples for some sun protection when i'm out and about in my woodland (mostly shade) garden.
