OMG where do I start? I was in NYC two weeks ago and I went to:
Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Shu Uemura (in Soho...bought the cleansing oil there!), Porto Rico Import company (on Bleecker St, love their coffee!), Sephora, Saks, Macy's (on Fashion Ave.), Century 21 (gotta stop there, designers duds on sale up to 70-80%, there is one right next to the Milenium Hilton across from Ground Zero. I stayed at the Milenium), Zara (I think it's in Noho), oh so many places! If you have time I would just trek around Soho...there are fabulous boutiques all up and down there.
The one place I missed that I wish I had made it to? Bond No. 9!!! There's one on Bleecker...man oh man you can be sure I'm hitting that the next time I go!
Oh and there is a Caron boutique in Manhattan as well!
Just watch whatever liquids you buy. You'll have to check them if they are over 3 oz and if they are under, they HAVE to fit in your quart baggie or they make you dump it! Hence I watched what I bought at Sephora and did not make a fragrance purchase.
I envy you...I want to go back sooooo badly! |

A question about liquids...do liquid foundations or lotions or serums all go into this category? |

HannaLee, not only serums and lotions, but also gels, lipsticks, etc. Anything in a tube or bottle has to be put into checked baggage or it has to fit into a one-quart zip-lock baggie, each item cannot contain more than 3 oz. and must be placed in clear view into the bin for security. I have flown at least 10 legs this year and my baggie usually ends up in the bin with my shoes and purse, facing the screener and I have not had anymore trouble about this. Last fall when it started, I missed a flight because after the attendants looked at what I had, the female one saw all my expensive creams etc. and knew I would not allow them to confiscate it all, so I had to repack and put it all in checked baggage and wait some 5 hours for the next flight. They seem to pay less attention to this in Europe, but in the US United Airlines especially is very brutal and unforgiving. Since I have been complying and quaking in my shoes that I have forgotten something in my bag with many pockets, I have not had any more trouble. But they are serious about this. HTH |

They'll be SUPER picky about this in the airports in NYC. My baggie was scanned TWICE...even though everything was under 3oz. and completely legal. Then they made me open it and take some of it out so they could see everything. I had my packed to the brim...so much so the flight attendant on the way there told me it was the most well packed, best 1 quart baggie she's ever seen!
It sucks because EVERYTHING has to go in there...lip gloss, mascara, my antiperspirant, lip balm, cream eye shadow, eyebrow wax, lipstick, even my MAC fluidline gel eyeliner had to go in...I put all my serums and skincare in sample size bags as not everything would fit. I didn't even take liquid foundation, only my powder.
1 quart is not that much for everything I use! But since I was only gone 5 days, I lived off of samples. It just sucked because when I bought my Shu Uemura cleansing oil, I had to buy a 3oz. container and a 2 oz. container to get it back (had to throw out the original bottle) and ended up chucking a couple of things to make room. Someone ahead of me got caught with her perfume in her carry on suitcase...they made her either a) dump stuff out of her bag and put the 1.7oz spray in her baggie or b) donate it to charity. She was livid but the TSA person told her it was a rule. She claimed she had never heard of such a rule. They've been in place since September of last year. When asked if she's flown since then she said she had, and the TSA person told her the security in whatever airport she flew wasn't doing their job then.
I don't know what she ended up doing. I managed to get back through security with my antiperspirant stashed in my suitcase. I did a little magic hiding since I knew how my suitcase would go through. Then I got to thinking...if I can do this...so can they... |

If time permits, visit Canal Street in Chinatown where you will find the most spectacular designer purses for under $50. Last year "my friend" purchased a fantastic Gucci bag for $25 and a Prada for $35. You will find Louis Vuitton, Coach, etc. It's definately worth the trip. |

If you are driving then you are fine.
It's only if you fly. I assumed you were flying from where you live...my bad! |

I recommend Canal Street in Chinatown for lots of cheap cute hair clips and hair pins. Also you simply must try the frozen hot chocolate from Jacques Torres on Hudson Street. I am addicted. |
