Does anyone want to know how the Carb Blocker works? My bf researched on this topic and forwarded some study results to me. I found it interesting and wanted to share with you all.
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=17299581
(If you clicked and got an error, it probably means part of the link got cut off, so you'll have to copy the entire link manually and paste it to another window.)
I like their conclusion:
Quote: |
The results of this investigation show that, when taken daily by overweight human subjects with the carbohydrate-rich portion of a 2000- to 2200-calorie diet, a dietary formula containing Phaseolus vulgaris extract as the major ingredient produced significant decreases in body fat while essentially maintaining lean body mass. Phaseolus vulgaris extract appears to be a safe and effective aid to consider in weight loss/maintenance programs.
|
My bf said, "Look at the specific results below. The negative values in the table (the leftmost number in each entry) represent the amount of weight in kg or size in cm reduced at the end of the study versus the beginning. The values are targeted to the groups' medians. The difference between people who ingested one tablet of 445 mg daily and the people who ingested placebo is HUGE."
Table 4
Effect of Phaseolus vulgaris-containing extract vs. control dietary supplement on the body composition of overweight subjects
Measured Parameter Test (n=30) Control (n=29) p-value
Body weight (kg) -2.93 ± 1.16 -0.35 ± 0.38 <0.001
Fat mass (kg) -2.4 ± 0.67 -0.16 ± 0.33 <0.001
Lean body mass (kg) -0.53 ±0.45 -0.19 ± 0.17 <0.05
Waist circumference (cm) -2.93 ± 2.13 -0.47 ± 0.39 <0.001
Hip circumference (cm) -1.48 ± 0.66 -0.10 ± 0.47 <0.001
Thigh (right) circumference (cm) -0.95 ± 0.80 -0.26 ± 0.46 <0.001
Adipose tissue thickness (via skin echogram) (mm) -4.2 ± 6.51 -0.66 ± 2.81 <0.001
Ave ± SEM is shown. Among various parameters, a comparison of the individual changes within groups (30 day values – baseline) was made between the test and control groups. The negative values indicate a loss from baseline within the group. The significance of the 30-day changes between the test and control groups were compared via the unpaired Student's t test and listed in the last column.

Thank you bkkgirl, that was a very impressive study. I had been taking the carb-blockers and they did help with weight loss. I stopped because I kept forgetting to take them before meals, especially when eating out. I have put weight back on since I stopped taking them - I'm sure gonna start again! |

I lost the 40 pounds I gained after dd by a low glycemic diet almost 5 years ago and have kept the pounds off. I do also from time to time use those pills (they contain soluble fiber which is good for you and also binds with some food components preventing their absorption so you take in less). I think they're good for the occasional splurge meal but if you want to keep the weight off it's best to change your eating habits (I know sounds hard). Although these pills are good some people get gas or other intestinal upsets due to to effects on the bowls, another reason why I think it is a good short term or spot treatment rather than a cure for obesity. |

Thanks so much for the info, bkkgirl! I've taken blockers on and off for the last couple of years, but now I'm definitely going to get on a daily regimen. As someone said, it is hard to take them "before" meals as instructions tell you to do, especially when you eat out frequently, which I do. OK everybody--what brand do you all take and where do you purchase the blockers. I've gotten mine online, but can't remember the brand name now, or where I purchased them from. I do know that Walmart and CVS no longer carries them, at least not in my area. Please advise ladies..
(bkkgirl -- I answered your pm in a nice long pm reply to you day before yesterday and then boom, the whole thing disappeared from the screen! Haven't had time to get back to it but I promise you I will!) |

Thanks, LeFemme! I look forward to receiving your input on Vichy Meokine. I just bought the Fusio Night, and so far so good.
I bought my Carb Blocker from Vitacost.com (LeFemme, are you in the US?). It's the NSI brand in capsules. It's the best price I could find. My bf bought the softgel kind from a local vitamin store. The brand is Irwin Natural. This is advertised as you can just take it right before meal, no waiting time, since it's in softgel. The capsules have to be taken 15 mins b4 meal. It's supposed to last in your system for 1-2 hours. I called Vitamin World (a US vitamin store) and they got this Irwin Natural brand. You can get 25% off by becoming their member. It's free. However, I think it works like GNC where you have to buy it at a certain time of month to get the discount. It costs $20 a bottle for 75 softgels, but with the 25% off, it's only $15.
I am definitely not relying solely on the carb blocker. I eat healthy most of the times without being too crazy about it, and have time to enjoy life. I exercise 3-5 times a week, again not going overboard. I try to do active things if not working out. As one gets older, I tend to think one needs all the help one can get. This carb blocker thing seems pretty harmless to me. So I'm glad my bf took the time to do the research and send me this study result. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

The side effects of Carb Blockers are that some people get diarrhea or gas especially if eating a large meal with a lot of fat and simple carbs. The active ingredient is a soluble fiber which is in general good for you but if you eat a huge meal and take these so it is not fully absorbed you will be uncomfortable. |

Daydreaming PS: to lose weight on a low carb routine
1. Drink green tea
2. Avoid trans fats at all costs (they are not only bad fats but hinder weight loss re. an Isreali study). This means no pork rinds, smoked meats etc.
3. Eat fiber. I eat 2T of Flax meal every day (but in ceral, in soups and stews and when baking.
4. Snack on protein snacks throughout the day (this keeps you feeling full). Celery stuffed with peanut butter or cream cheese is a good snack as are hard boiled eggs.
5. Make sure you always have good snacks in the office or home to keep you from eating bad calories. Office snacks are hard to resist.
6. Eat breakfast (an egg, fax cereal) and coffee or tea.
Good Luck. It continues to work wonders for me and my cholesterol is very, very low. |

LOL I don't think so! It works on complex carb like starch, so it won't turn in to sugar. Beer got sugar in it which is what makes a person fat. I wish it blocks sugar, too. For beer, you may be just have to exercise more, and take green tea fat burner, or chromium picolinate to help you burn off the sugar. I used to take chromium picolinate before I stepped on the treadmill, and it worked great. I still do from time to time, when I don't forget. |

Maybe they meant "flax" cereal.
Cereals are very high in Carbs it depends on the amount of sugar in them. Sugar is the bad component in the carb content! |

The cereal I was referring to was flax/whey protein powder/small amount of oats. Cereals are in general bad but high protein/high fiber work on a low carb diet. The cereal should have more than 6gm fiber per serving. Some commercial cereals are OK. There are some with 20gm or less carb per serving and 6 gm (or more) of fiber so less than 14gm per serving (one example that I like is Grape Nuts Flakes (not the reg. grape nuts). You need to read the labels.
Sorry I wrote "fax" instead of flax! You can get golden flax meal at most grocery stores in my area. |

thx sharky! one more question - when u said "no pork rinds, smoked meats", did u also mean no sausages as well? coz there are a lot of packed cooked sausage in the grocery stores that marked "0g carbs"... would those be exempted? |

About processed meats you need to see all of the ingredients many have starches and/or sugar added, in addition nearly all have trans fats (I looked at one label and was astonished at the transfat content). Avoid anything that says "partially hydrogenated". A recent study by a well respected Israeli university showed that all calories are NOT the same, when fed an equal calories with one group having no trans fats the trans fat group gained significantly more weight.
In general the closer to nature the better. |
