We have seen increasing generic brand (store brand) products sitting next to the Name-brand products, i.e. Shampoo, cleanser, and so on. Just wondering if anyone knows whether some of the generic brands are actually made by the same manufacturer for the Name brand products? |

I'm curious too, when I'm in CVS and see their CVS version/knock-off of say, Olay Regenerist Serum, I have to believe they are having the manufacturer make it for them, can't be that CVS is running their own skincare manufacturing plant somewhere, would be too expensive. |

That never occurred to me, but I bet you're right! Avalange mentioned that she talked to a Trader Joe's employee who explained that a lot of the time, TJs has a vendor reformulate a product slightly and package it in TJs-specific bottles, etc. - like their castille soap is actually made by Dr. Bronner's. But I don't know if other stores do that too. Wouldn't be surprised, I guess! |

It's usually the manufacturer of whatever item repackaging it as a 'private label' brand. If you look on the back of some products, they'll state that they don't sell private labels, but that's not always the case. I think the knockoffs work just fine! |

I suspect some of the manufacturers unitize their excess capacity to produce the generic products selling to customers at different price points to maximize revenue. I am curious to know who is actually behind these generic names. |

Well they are most of them in fact. This is done to cater for lower income consumers without loosing market share. In fact 1 manufacture many times has also more than 1 name brand as well. Lets just say it is effective marketing and they are getting greedy and greedy ![Rolling Eyes](images/smiles/rolleyes.gif) |

I am sure that many times they are made by the same folks. For example, did a tour at a bra factory a couple of years ago - all the bras were the same - some got a Victoria Secret Label and some got a JC Penney brand label... same bra. Cost difference was considerable. So why would the cosmetic industry be any different? Maybe, some formulas use less expensive ingredients.. but I am thinking a lot of them are the same.
Read the ingredients and compare. |

I've always wondered about that too. although I had bought store brand shampoo and it did not work the same for me as the name brand. |

Yes I knew that. Sometimes I buy the generic brand (frequently referred to as "store brands” ) instead of the name brand because of pricing. Generic brand products are often of equal quality as a branded product. you will definitely save money purchasing the generic brand instead of the name brand. |

It goes for everything, not just beauty products. A big company makes products to be distributed by a smaller, 'private label' company.
I've never really had good experience with private label products. They're often almost like the name brand, but the texture is off, the smell is off... It's the 'same',. but not, probably because they used cheaper materials and ingedients to make the product. |
