Should a woman go shorter as they get older?

| Nooo. Sorry I really hate how most woman cut all their hair off and get the same haircut after a certain age. It is like a slow progression to the grannyfro. DON'T DO IT! Fight the urge! |

I think cutting the hair short is an outdated notion. I am so grateful that today we have the freedom to do what we want. I'm in my 40s and wear my hair long (to my bra strap). I look like Zippy the Pinhead with short hair (my face is small relative to my body). I plan to always have long hair past my shoulders.

I agree ...and long hair can look great whatever the colour or age! |

I think you should wear your hair anyway you want to regardless of age. I'm 46 years old,long (middle of the shoulder blades) and happy to say I'm not gray, yet. I am blonde and I have highlights...three different colors, blonde, blonder and RED!!!  I get so many compliments. So I say, do as you please as long as it's flattering for you. |

age-appropriate, short hair hair is a myth designed to keep hair designers in business after the blue rinse went out of favor... 
I keep my hair long because I like those luxurious curls! And when I want a shorter look in the summer heat I can pull it up in a pony tail! |

| Unlike clothing, I think a person's thought of how they want to wear their hair is a personal choice. Long hair looks gorgeous on woman in their 50's. I hate my hair short and I where it in many of the "styles" today. I do believe though, as I referenced above if someone is trying to pull off a style, like a mid drift shirt in their 50's and a mini skirt, that does not work. Also I think woman that wear their hair long like a horse mane is equally NOT attractive. Do something with it. Where it in a style. Hair and clothing can really make a person look old. I say Style appropriate hair and age appropriate clothes! |

I found that as I got older, the short hair that had once looked "edgy" now was looking matronly!
I wear my hair just above my shoulders now. (I also wear less make up than I used to, because I also think that make up can add years to a woman's looks, too.) |

Great thread!
I've been cutting my hair little by little to see if I can handle going short. (It's short to me now-1/2 below shoulders, but I'm trying to redefine my version of short).
I haven't taken the plunge yet, but I've noticed that almost all the books at salons feature short cuts and stylists always try cut more than you want off (even if your hair is heathly), but when I stopped to notice women around me I noticed that almost everyone had long hair.
Very few women here have short hair...even with all this heat! It is hard to find someone with hair shorter than chin length who isn't a senior citizen.
I just found it funny how few women have short hair, yet in salons that is the look stylists try to create. Just trying to create business I guess....  |

After years of wearing my long hair up I have now finally started to wear it down. You cannot really 'style' long hair as the length is the style. Unless you want to use heated gadgets, but that just wrecks the hair. I get most compliments and turn most heads when my hair is down as opposed to up.. And I have decided to wear miniskirts until I get wrinkly knees! |

Guapagirl: I still wear short skirts (also short shorts in the summer) my legs are still very good at 51 (think they're the best part of me). If they were fat or veiny I wouldn't but as long as they're not it's fun. I wouldn't wear a bare midriff but as long as someone has the body that allows it I do not see why not. I've seen some older women sailors around here with short shorts and their shirt tails tied and I think it looks nice.
I also have long straight hair. I'm thinking of getting it cut to shoulder length and angled in front but I don't know. |

Ahhhhhhhh ... hair woes!
About a year ago I got my hair cut short (for me) and I thought it really aged me. I love that my hair is silver in the front and have let it grow to rest on my shoulders. I have a ton of layers. My face is very angular and it fits me AND my personality! Plus, even a styling impaired person (moi) and handle it!
Re: minis ... if you're comfortable I say GO FOR IT! I've always been told my legs are my best feature and while I won't wear stuff up to the middle of my thighs anymore I WILL go as short as I'm comfy with.
50 is the new 20. Or something like that. Which, by default, makes 52 even better. |

Oh, I hope I did not offend by saying things about clothing and hair...I hope you all know what I mean. I did not mean harm or mean to say that everyone with long hair is just not cool....that is not what I meant and YES if you can pull of the mini skirts, by all means DO IT. I was referring to the women that can't do it and we have all seen that right. Sorry, I hope I did not cause harm,  |

Yup, me too! Everyone who knows me agrees that I look better in short hair, but now that I'm in my late 40s, "edgy" has been replaced by "soft yet stylish". I still wear it about chin-length, though. Anything longer seems to drag my face down and age me. I'm envious of you ladies with long hair. |

My hair is about two inches above my bra strap.
~I'm considering never cutting my hair off again.
I'm gonna twirl it up in long white braids when it's really long and I'm very old, then let it down all tangled and wild to scare all the neighbourhood children.
I am hoping to become the 'witch' that existed on the block when we were kids. ~
I believe we should all set goals in our lives.

Every once in awhile I toy with the idea of cutting my hair short (right now it's a little past my shoulders), but I'm afraid I won't like it...then I'd have to deal with that awkward growing out phase |

I struggled with this too, about a year and a half ago. I had long wavy red hair, and decided that a shorter style would do me good and get me out of the teenager look.
It was the most horrifying haircut ever! I hardly had any hair left to play with...and now I say to hell with age-specific haircuts. I wanted to look sophisticated and older, but now I realize that I love long hair too much...it makes me look younger, almost juevenile, and to me this is perfect. I would rather keep looking like I'm 16 with my lion's mane in my 20s and above, because that's the age I feel. I'm comfortable with looking youger and innocent 
This all stems from the fact that I read in a hair style magazine, that once a young woman reaches the age of 18, she shouldn't have hair past her breasts. Well, now I will grow it down to my bum! With stylish layers, of course. |

| Over 40 here, with shoulder length curly hair. Letting my gray grow in and very happy to stop permanent coloring. I love that I can wear it down or up, depending on what I feel like doing (and what the weather is outside). |

for the record, I'm 42 with super short fringe and just had my waist length hair chopped off.

I am 46 with slighly layered hair - mid back (just past shoulders).
I have dark blonde hair naturally and have blonde highlights.
I do like short hair on other women; it just doesn't feel like "me" when I had short hair. |

I'm 52 with fine, light brownish red (and gray ) very short hair. I cut it myself according to whim Cut it again last night when I had a few minutes (the back is the hardest!)
I accidentally (playing with some of my daughters stuff left under the sink!) bleached a bunch of streaks in the front and on top a couple weeks age, it looked pretty good, but decided to go a little futher, so now the former white is shades of pink, from cotton candy to bright, and I love it.
A little surprising, but actually very flattering. Puts a grin on my face every time I catch sight of myself in a mirror. |
