I'm so excited, I was just offered a job on my lunch break today! I'm currently on a contract assignment at a big tech corp, but once it ends in August I was expecting to be unemployed for a while until I found something, since I wanted to really take the time to find a good fit. But I found it ahead of time, and my new employer is going to be really cool and flexible about my start date, so I'll be able to finish my assignment here and even take some time off before I start. Yayayay!
And my new position will be much more geared towards what I like doing, and I'll have a lot more responsibility. And the pay is the same as my contract rate, but that's pretty darn good for a full-time position - it's more than I'd ever made before, and there's a lot of room for growth, and the employer is really generous with everything. AND the new office is a five minute walk from my new apartment! No more hour-and-a-half gridlocked commute, no more standing up because all the seats on the bus are taken... I can be healthy, stroll to work and home, and make it to my 6:45 kickboxing class on time every time. Which means I can actually start going again and lose some of this jiggly I've put on being a cubicle sheep, haha. I'm so so so excited! Yayayay!
The only downside is that I'll have less freedom at work to surf EDS all day, hahaha. I suppose it's a small price to pay for a job that's actually satisfying and engaging. Plus, I'll have more free time for skincare fun. |

Thanks, you guys, I really appreciate all your support! And I'm not going to totally disappear, haha, I'm too addicted for that. I'll just have to learn to be more responsible about how I get my fix. The new job is for a very small and tech-savvy firm, and I'm quite certain that not only will I not have time for Internet stuff as much, but I will also be working for people who undoubtedly know how to track my bandwidth usage quite easily, and will do so if they feel like I'm slacking a ton. This will be a good exercise in discipline, honestly, as I'm truly terrible about wasting time at work right now. But y'all are so fun! |

I'm so happy for you! It's it amazing what a good job does for you? You can't beat how close it is to home. Just think- you won't have to wait in the rain at the bus stop either! (I grew up mostly in Portland so I know rain.) |

Grrr... minor update and tiny rant. So I'm working at a company now that is giant and faceless at times, and being a contractor there can be a bit frustrating. They verbally discussed my contract length with me after the first time I became aware that it would get extended, and they said mid-September but then only officially extended it to August 31st. I asked about this, both verbally and in writing at the time (back in May or June), and got no response, so I kinda shrugged it off.
Now, when I first started the application process for the job I just got, I sent an email to the three bosses I THINK I have, one for each project, and asked if my end date was REALLY August 31st, or if they were going to be trying to extend it again, because I had a potential job opportunity for a permanent position that wanted to start after August 31st. But the hierarchy chain here is confusing, so I asked them to please let me know if I was directing this to the wrong people. Again, no response - and this was on July 18th. I ask around verbally too and get no response.
Then, just this Monday (July 30th), I sign the papers after work gets out for this new job, to start in early September after a brief break when my contract ends. I was out sick on Tuesday, and on Wednesday before I had a chance to email just letting them know I would be unavailable after August 31st, I got an email saying they'd extended my contract. I let them know that this wasn't going to work for me, and my manager started guilt-tripping me about how she thought we'd already talked about scheduling and I said I was free and open. I pointed out to her that I had asked several times about what my REAL end date was, and never gotten a reply, and she still seemed pissed at me.
If they had communicated with me, this wouldn't have been a problem! And as my office mate and fellow contracter pointed out, THEY are the ones who are commitment-shy - they like to keep contracts short on paper and repeatedly extend them, rather than give a long contract date on paper - in case they want to fire someone without complication, based on THEIR needs. But this keeps us contractors constantly guessing and in the dark about what our real future is there, or how long we'll have any job security.
I guess I don't blame them on their end for doing things how they do, but I really resent being guilt-tripped when I feel like I was MORE than accommodating - they asked me if I could push back my start date at the new job, and I said I didn't think I could do that without jeopardizing my offer, which is true. I mean, c'mon, the norm is TWO WEEKS notice, and I'm giving a friggin' month, and I tried giving a month and a half, but they didn't listen.
Anyway, I'm still excited about the new gig, just had to pause and whine for a bit about how the old ones were. Glad I'm out the door soon! |

Heh, so just today my boss (the current one, who was guilt-tripping me) confessed that it had just slipped her mind to get back to me about my end date, and we chatted a bit about my new position, and I feel a lot less guilt-tripped and consequently a lot less annoyed now.
Pretty soon I get to start hiring my own assistant for the new job! I've only ever BEEN an assistant, I've never hired one. This should be interesting! |

That is awesome! I freelance, and I hesitate to get a full time job because salaries are usually nothing compared to what I get hourly.
Congrats. |
