I plan to buy a handbag in Canada and I know we can re-claim the Sales Tax once we're back in the UK by sending a claim over to the Canadian Customs people. However, it's over the value of goods you're allowed to bring back into the country and I'm wondering if anyone else has done this, claimed their Sales Tax back from Canada and then been stung for Customs & VAT over here? (Do the Canadians send our Customs people the info?)
I'm hoping this won't happen, but the bag is still cheaper over there even if I do have to pay Customs & VAT over here. (Yep, Rip-off Britain strikes again. And the bag is actually Italian, yet far cheaper in North America! ) |

I thought you could get your sales tax back whilst still in the country?! |

You can, but I don't think we'll have time to go and do that so will probably have to wait until we return to the UK. Besides, I was wondering whether the Canadian Customs people pass on your details to our UK lot whenever/wherever you claim back your sales tax.
In any case, I've just found out that the lady in Holt Renfrew gave me the wrong price for my bag. After ringing again to check, I've discovered that it's almost as expensive over there as it is in the UK. (Apparently, the US prices are better, but we won't be able to pop over the border.) So no new bag for me, after all. |

are you limited in how much £/$ gifts you can bring back - all that credit card info is passed over when you check in...there is a ton of info that is passed over. |

Yes, there is a limit, Eve. Not sure how much, though, must check.
Is credit card info passed when you travel between Canada and the UK now? I heard that was happening for travel to the US, but not anywhere else. It's quite scary how much info they insist on knowing. Although I'm all for making places safer, I do worry about them going too far and maybe using the terrorist threat as an excuse. |
