I know I'm very behind the times of British comedy; the only way I have access to it is via the public television networks here in the states, but some of the British sitcoms are among my all time comedy favorites. I was wondering what your fave British sitcoms are?

Are You Being Served? I absolutely ADORE this show and haven't been able to see it for a couple years. One of the funniest episodes ever revolved around the ever dignified and proper Mr. Peacock when he got a boil on his bum! Laughing

Keeping up Appearances - anyone who has ever seen a social climber and highly shallow woman in action can appreciate this one. Hyacinth so wants to belong to a higher echelon of society; it's hilarious to see the lengths she'll go to to keep her trashy sisters and even trashier brother in law of the perpetual undershirt out of sight of their "betters"! Laughing

Faulty Towers - Basil wants to attract a higher class of clientele at his slightly rundown hotel but can't manage to keep his temper in check. The funniest episode ever is when he tried to take up watercolor painting. Ended up smashing his easel and stomping on it during one of his famous temper tantrums!

Mr. Bean - who can ever forget the episode where Mr. Bean cooks a Christmas turkey? I always get a visual of Mr. Bean staggering around the kitchen with a turkey on his head whenever I prepare one during the holidays.

Faulty Towers by a landslide. I especially like in the opening credits when they change the hotel sign into dirty words....hehe. Laughing

I love all of the shows you've mentioned, but I truly roll on the floor with laughter watching the British comedy AbFab (Absolutely Fabulous)! The stars of this show, Patsy and Edina, are truly monstrous creations who are selfish, shallow poseurs hell-bent on living life as excessively as possible! They enthusiastically imbibe hard liquor, hashish, cigarettes and cocaine, and generally act like irresponsible 20-year-olds, though both are obviously in their 40's! Their behaviour is outrageous, their rudeness devastating, and their callous and acidic attitude towards good causes and traditional values absolutely shocking!!! I LOVE IT!!!

I must be sick and twisted, then! I love The League of Gentlemen.

Other favourites include Shameless, Spaced, Green Wing, Big Train, Black Books, Father Ted, One Foot in the Grave, Alan Partridge, Phoenix Nights, The Brittas Empire, Absolutely, TMWRNJ, Fist of Fun, The Office, Peep Show, Star Stories (the recent Take That one was an absolute killer), Brass Eye, The Thick of It, The IT Crowd, Extras, The Mighty Boosh, Nathan Barley, Marion and Geoff, Nighty Night, Look Around You, The Fast Show and probably loads more.

Have you seen all 4 so far? My husband heard that a 5th is planned. Keeping all my fingers crossed. The writing and attention to detail on Shameless is sublime. It's very clever indeed. I must admit that the characters are very familiar to me - that's exactly the kind of environnment (albeit diluted a wee bit back in those days - it's just like Shameless, however, nowadays) in which I grew up!

Men behaving badly, Ab fab, Fawlty towers
, I could go on and on listing but then it looks like I spend my whole life watching TV.

Majorb, I saw all 4 seasons and hope you're right about a 5th. Although I wasn't brought up in that background, I ended up in it courtesy of my ex-husband (hence the ex) Laughing

Poor you! Although it's good fun to go back temporarily. I could tell you some stories that would make the characters on Shameless blush!

Ooh I am behind! I read this book "The Complete Yes Minister" and found it hilarious! It also explained how much American bureacracy has "inherited" from Great Britain! You mean there was a TV show based upon this book, or was the book based on the television show? Hmm, I can see John Cleese starring in this role... Laughing

1st: Monty Python's Flying Circus
2nd: Faulty Towers
3rd: Ripping Yarns

The comedy of Cleese, Palin, Idle, Chapman, Gilliam, Jones...and Carol Cleveland will never be completely duplicated or outdone. It was the best! It actually formed part of who I am today. There wasn't a day that didn't go by that my friends and I in high school and college in the 70s didn't watch the BBC shows, movies, read the books, or sit around reciting the sketches word for word...

Since this is a cosmetic forum, did you guys happen to see the AbFab episode where Eddie gets hold of Botox and loads up her face, and then overdoses Patsy with Botox...leaving her paralyzed in bed, drooling on herself, unable to move??!! I thought I was going to die laughing....

OMIGOD, is this on DVD? I have just GOT to see this, that's hilarious! I was always amused by the different hair colors and wild eyeshadows sported by Mrs. Slocum on Are you Being Served?

Wow, no one has mentioned:

Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em (OMG the funniest ever!!), Red Dwarf and Black Adder yet!

Other favorites of the past are: AbFab, Keeping up Appearances, Yes, Minister; and Faulty Towers.

Of course REALLY going back you have Bless this House, Love Thy Neighbour, Man About the House, and Doctor in the House... all funny ones I watched as a kid.

The only one in the "new" batch of British comedy I find remotely funny is The IT Crowd.

I love all of those oldies, tiger-tim, and I'm even old enough to remember them! Laughing

I used to get upset watching Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, though. I loved Frank and hated when bad things happened to him - which they did frequently. (Mind you, Tom & Jerry cartoons used to also make me sob at the awful fates which befell poor Tom. I couldn't stand Jerry and thought he was really horrible.) Embarassed

Laughing you would be a good match for my dad.. always rooting for Roadrunner to "get what's comin' to him".

And, he also LOVED to watch Some Mothers too! To think what Michael Crawford went on to do...

It always makes me die to see that the old 70's and 80's sitcoms are doing the rounds in the US still. We have tons of other sitcoms even some made in the noughtys! Wink I just love Catherine Tate, mostly Nan (maybe because she is so like my mum) and a programme that's on at the mo that I love is Star Stories it's a spoof documentary, the first week it was about Take That (a 90's boy group that have reformed recently) and this week it was about Tom Cruise... SO FUNNY!

I also like bits of Little Britain, (Ting Tong, I'm a Lady, Vicky Pollard, the only gay in the village) but some of the characters aren't funny, just shockingly disgusting!

Extras was hilarious, did anyone see little Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), trying to get sex and flicking a condom which landed on Diana Rigg's head?! Laughing

My absolute favourite sitcom of all time and probably the fave of millions of Brits was Only Fools and Horses, everyone can recite the chandelier sketch 'now brace yourself Rodney' or remember the 80's yuppy sketch with Derek drinking at a bar when someone raises the bar. I've seen that sketch a million times and I still crack up everytime!! Smile In fact I've just found it on youtube, if you haven't seen it before, check this out...... fantastic!!!
