I love MMU, but the thing is, sometimes if my skin is going through a flaky day (weather is dry, used too much taz, forgot to use EII, etc), I don't really noticed until AFTER I apply my beloved MMU, and then all of the sudden the flakes on my face are clear as day. It's really frustrating when this happens, because if I just put lotion on the flaky patches it will disturb my MMU and I'll basically have to start all over. Luckily the other day I stumbled onto a really brilliant quick fix, and I've been using it ever since with no problems. The other day when my face was seriously flaky after I applied my MMU, I misted it generously with Phyto Moisture from Zenbiotic. The mist sprays out super fine, so it did not disturb my make up at all, and as a bonus, it "set" my MMU as well. A few quick sprays and my flakes were all gone, and after my face dried again my MMU was set and my skin was glowing! I highly recommend having a bottle of this stuff on hand if you are a MMU addict like me.

Manslayerliz, did the flakes reappear later in the day or were they pretty much gone for the day? Thanks!

Totally gone, Charis! Of course, when I washed my face at night I still gave my face a good scrub with the EII for good measure, but the Phyto Moisture definitely fixed the problem.

Sorry to be off topic, but I was just wondering what kind and brand MMU you're using Liz.
I would love yo use it, but I'm afraid it will break me out because of the zinc and titanium (di)oxide. For Colorescience (Sunforgettable) díd break me out. However, that might not mean áll MMU's wil break me out of course.
Jane Iredale claims it is non comedogenic, but it contains Zi and TiO2, so I'm afraid to try it.

Thanx in advance for your answer!

I have had the same good results (fixing flakies while wearing MMU, and setting MMU) with Jane Iredale's D2O spray, as well as other moisturizing fine-mist sprays.

Hello dear Jouke! I'm no expert by any means, but I suspect you might have broken out notfrom the zinc oxide, but by the bismuth oxychloride in the Colorscience which actually causes a lot of people to break out, so you're not alone!^-^ As Cat so astutely pointed out, I'm a HUGE Alima fan, and I would definitely recommend trying to get your hands on a few samples and seeing if your skin likes them better than teh Colorscience. HTH!

After applying MMU I spritz with either JB Organic toner or a home-based silk and pearl hydrosol, worked wonders for me the day after I overdid my pumpkin peel and woke up with the redness and flaky cheeks the next day! The only one who know what I trainwreck my face was was ME! and I like to keep those kinds of things to myself Laughing

Stardustdy--- I think that patting would disturb/smudge the makeup. I just mist and then let it dry, and it looks perfect. As for how many sprays, it depends on how flaky I am, LOL! 2 or 3 generally seems sufficient. HTH!

Another possibility, aside from the chemical Liz mentioned, is dimethicone - I'm not sure about Colorescience's MMU but I've seen in their powder sunscreen ingredients that they contain dimethicone, and I personally break out really easily with that, whereas titanium dioxide and zinc oxide don't bother my acne at all. So you might want to check for that as well! Generally speaking, the minerals you referenced are not regarded as acnegenic/comedogenic, so while it's possible your skin is reacting to those, I think it's more likely that it was some other ingredient. Definitely get some different MMU samples and play around.

Thank you all for the replies. I agree with you that is't too early to avoid all Zi and TiO2-products only because Colorescience broke me out and those two ingredients seem to be to blame for that. At least some say so.
The only reason I'd like to use MMU is that it has a sunscreen, also provided by those two ingredients.
But how much SPF do they provide? Jane Iredale claims an SPF20 Rolling Eyes. But you need to add only a very thin layer! Will that provide SPF20? I can't imagine, think you need a thick layer for that. What do you think?
I won't use it as the only SPF, but on top of my non-geasy essential sunscreen SPF15 (Paula's Choice). Only for the sunny days (not too much in the Netherlands Laughing)

Both Alima and Lumiere they say nothing 'bout an SPF. Lumiere says it has not been tested. But they both contain especially Zi and TiO2. So they shóuld protect against the sun.

I checked Alima's website. The colors look very dark. I'm a blond and my skin is light/medium neutral, but even pale neutral looks way darker than my skin is!!
You are very pale Manslayerliz, at least so you say, aren't the colors too dark for you?
Of course I can order some samples, they do ship to Europe, it's not too expensive.

Hi again, Jouke! Yes, you're right, Alima and Lumiere have not been tested for SPF (it's apparently a very expensive process), however, they do contain very similar ingredients to brands that HAVE been tested, such as Colorscience, etc, so I don't worry about it too much. To answer your question, yes, I'm am an INCREDIBLY pale lady. (Here's a quick picture of me, to give you an idea:)

Image

Luckily, Alima has the best range of shade for fair-skinned ladies that I have EVER found. Their palest shade is C-0, which is honestly WAY too pale, even for me! Shock I've found that I do much better with N-0 with a little W-0 mixed in, although I plan on trying their O-0 soon since I've heard it's a nice, pale, beige color. If your skin is light-medium neutral, you might want to try a few of their Neutrals in the 1-2-3 range--- I think that 0 would just be way too pale for you. You might also think about trying one of their lighter O's, just to see what happens. HTH!

Woooohh!!! Very pale!!! And very nice Smile

How do you post a picture??? Rolling Eyes

I'm 43, I have much more lines in my face than you have Embarassed. Won't the MMU build up in those lines? (of course you can't speak by experience Very Happy)

Jouke, I hope you don't mind me butting in but being 50+ I think I might be able to offer some MMU advice for the mature skin set. MMU doesn't settle in the fine (and not so fine) lines as long as you don't apply too much. Just a very thin layer(s) is all that's needed. I also find exfoliation and a good moisturizer to be essential.

Dear friends,
Thank you for all your help and advices
I have ordered some Alima samples (N1,N2 and N2). I 've heard good and bad stories about MMU, but you can't value it if you haven't given it a try can you?
I have given up about Colorescience, happy that it probably wasn't the Zi and TiO2 that broke me out. Still too bad: it was not the cheapest stuff on earth (not to mention the shipping to Europe) Crying or Very sad
But one's got to learn from ones mistakes! Wink

Now I'm looking forward to the samples very much. I understand you shouldn't apply to much in order to avoid it settling in wrinkles, but do you really think it still protects from the sun if it's súch a thin layer? Or is it just for our peace of mind?

ah, i think if you wanted all the sun protection a mmu could give you, you would have to measure it out in a 1/4 tsp measuring spoon, like they do when they test the stuff in the labs! since this is clearly impossible, it'd probably be better to find a nice matte sunscreen and apply a thin layer of mmu over it. there are a lot of threads about possible combos of ss and powder, just search for keywords: "powder" and "sunscreen."

Oh, what a gorgeous pic!! Ok, so Liz's signature (the palest woman on earth) doesn't seem so far-fetched. Do you therefore burn easily?

I haven't been too successful with the spritzing thing to be honest.

Why thank you, my dear!^-^ And yes, I burn quite easily. Actually, if I even THINK about the sun, I get burned, LOL! The few times a year when I actually venture out to a pool or beach, I wear a black t-shirt or black rashguard over my swimsuit, and then smear the rest of my body with a thick, white coat of sunscreen. Definitely not too glamourous, but it gets the job done!

Just wondering....does it have to be a moisturing spray? Or can any spray do (like floral hydrosol)?

P.S. Liz, you look fantastic in the pic! Flawless skin and a gorgeous dress, cant see the ring properly, but it looks huge!

I think it has to be a moisturizing spray. I usually set my MMU with Caudalie Grape water, and that works fine unless I'm flaky, since it doesn't help the flakes.

(And thank you very much, Miss yeahyeah!^-^ It's one of my favorite wedding pictures. )
