For those of you that have rosacea, I am looking for some help and advice. First of all, are facials good or bad for rosacea. I've been getting facials basically every 6 weeks for about 10 years and I've developed rosacea in the last year. My skin looks awful now and I don't know whether to continue or not.
I also really have no idea which products are good or not good for rosacea. I've been using Aveda products forever and I am basically happy with them. I stopped using anything with tourmaline in it because it is harsh and I've switched to their sensitive line. I really have no idea whether I should be completely switching or not.
I'm 47 years old and I have always had flawless skin before a year ago. It was always my best feature and it's killing me. At least I don't seem to have wrinkles. |

I can't help you with facials and rosacea but thought you might like reading the below link. Last night I heard on the news that there will soon be a breakthrough treatment for rosacea.

Have you any problems with hormones as my skin has changed a lot in the last year and its definitely due to hormones I now have some little spots which I never had when I was a teenager I have adjusted my skin care regime funny dealing with wrinkles and a few spots. My cheeks have gotten very sensitive so I do not use any exfoliatants even during facials. Origins skincare products especially the Mega Mushroom range is brilliant |

For the most part I am still getting my period every 4 weeks so I can't contribute it to hormones. The dermatologist said it was rosacea and he gave me a cream to use. I have no problem using the the cream; I just want to see if I can get some other skin care advice. |

Hi hardtohandle,
I've had rosacea about twelve years. I use Metrocream that was prescribed by a derm. I guess that's the first step to help get it under control. Most important be gentle with your skin. I've been using Yonka products with success.I can't use anything with sulfates in it (instant redness). There's alot of good advice on this board about rosacea, and I'm sure some of the people here will give your more advice. As for facials, the steam was a no no for me.I had a Yonka facial about two months ago without steam, and I had no problems.I don't plan on getting them very often. |

Thanks for your advice. I also have a cream that I am using, I think I need to be more diligent about it. I've also stopped scrubbing my face at night with a wash cloth.
When I have my facials she really doesn't use steam, she puts a hot towel on for a minute so that she can get the stuff out of my pores.
Thanks for the advice. The Yonka products are not available in the US but I am sure that I will find something. |

Hi again,
I live in the US, and use Yonka. I can't order from EDS because they can't ship out of the country. I order mine from skinstore.com, and are some other sites that you can Google. Good luck. |

Hardtohandle- So sorry you are struggling with this. I personally do not have rosacea but my husband does and it was many years and many dermatologists before he was able to get the problem under control. Annie313's information is excellent. Like her, my husband uses Metrogel (I believe it is available in both cream or gel form) and that helps tremendously. He also has to be very gentle with his skin IE; No microdermabrasions, no facials or steam, no sulfates - basically the less products he uses on his face, the better his complexion looks. He uses Cetaphil cleanser for sensitive skin and Metrogel twice a day. |

I know that everyone who suffers from rosacea have different things that cause more or less irritation. If the facials are fragrancy I would probably avoid them. My skin gets bright red in blotches all over my face if I put anything that smells perfume-like. I'm only 22 and would say I've had rosacea since I was about 15. I've kept my problem under control for a couple years now..basically use a gentle cleanser (cetaphil), use gentle exfoliation once a week maybe twice, and using antioxidants have seemed to minimize irritation.
I recommend NOT worrying so much about it. The more you analyze every little flaw rosacea can cause, the more it can trigger the problem. Just be confident and take the best care of your skin as possible and nobody will even notice. Nobody notices I have it |

I have mild rosacea, and from what I've learned (and I've learned a lot from reading this board) everyone with rosacea is different in terms of what is going to cause a flare.
For me, I am able to go for facials every 12 weeks and these are definitely good for my skin and don't trigger a flare. My aesthetician also has mild rosacea, so that probably helps in that she understands. I also get microdermabrasion with my facials -- again, for me, this is ok. (By the way, I recently started using a product called Epiderma II by NaturDerm, and it is an exfoliating scrub that I read is especially well tolerated by people with rosacea ... there's a thread on this board about it. I love the way it is evening out my skin tone.)
I also have the metrogel cream (mine is Noritate 1%) that my dermatologist prescribed for me years ago. I don't use it regularly -- I just keep it on hand for when I do see some redness. It is great in terms of keeping the rosacea under control. |

Oh, and I also meant to say one other thing:
If you get an Rx for metrogel and get your rosacea back under control, you can try adding things back to your skin care regimen until you find what causes a flare.
Of course, as I'm sure you know, some people have dietary triggers (such as red wine and spicy food) or it could simply be something like the summer heat that causes a flare and not necessarily something you are putting on your skin. |

Thank you all so much for your advice. I'm very funny in that I have been using the same skin products for years and I love them so much that I hate to change them. I may have to though. For now, I am going to use the cream Noritate every night and see how I do. I also think that I may cut back on the facials..instead of every 6 weeks, I think I will cut it in half and go every 12.
I guess part of my frustration is that there is no "one answer" Each person is different and it's going to take some trial and error to find what works and what doesn't.
The other day I bought eyeliner to try again and after using it for 2 days, my eyes started to explode. So I guess that is out
I don't like the feel of liquid and wetting dry shadow is not optimal but at least that doesn't irritate me. I guess I am going to have to keep trying between those 2 and see which I dislike less. |
