To be more specific - for sleeping to at night when it's really hot outside...
We put the air conditioners up every summer, and every summer, my husband ends up sleeping in my daughter's room and my daughter sleeps with me b/c we love the air conditioner going all night when it's hot and he hates the air conditioner and loves leaving the windows open and having the ceiling fan on.
Sometimes I don't know whether it's the soothing hum of the a.c. that I like more than the coolness of it. My husband can't understand how I blast the a.c. then sleep with all the covers on! I don't know why I do it either - but I love it.
So are you guys fans of fans? or do you prefer air conditioning to sleep to when it's hot and sticky at night?

I am with you - I am a 100% airconditioning kinda gal. For the love of god I dont know why we did not put it in the bedroom when we moved into the new house back in April... we have now had to move our sleeping quarters down to the living room in order to get a good night's sleep.
I just cannot sleep when it is all humid and sticky (30 degrees celcius and 70% humidity at 2am is insane!), even with a fan on.. besides the fan hitting the body directly is not very good for internal health (especially those with weak stomachs). At least with air, you can cool the general room and then can put a cotton blanket on to protect the body.
First thing on the spring 2008 shopping list - airconditioning for upstairs!! |

I prefer the aircon BUT always wake up feeling a little ill (like I have a cold) but when I sleep with the fan I feel better....plus I cant crank up the aircon anyway as my boy cat sleeps with me and doesnt like it too cold.....(will complain all night!!!!!!)
so fan it is! If I keep the ac on all day or at least for a few hours in my room then its fine with just the fan at night! |

I prefer windows open. If it really gets hot and humid AC is a must (humidity knocks me out ). For years I worked in an AC environment. After leaving work I found the heat hit me like walking into a wall. Now that I am only working part time I try to live without AC as much as possible. Living on the ocean my air quality is fairly good. If I lived in the city I would most likely use AC more often. |

Growing up in Miami, the air conditioner is a must for sleeping at night. It really helps to take out the humidity in th air and makes sleeping easier. Now that I live in Colorado, usually air conditioning is not a requirement for at night because the temps get into the 60s. |

I love a/c!
Last summer we bought a window fan. It works like a fan but draws in the air from outside. Its awesome at night! It feels like a/c, but its a fan. There are different temperature settings as well...15C, 18C, 21C and 24 Cel. |

I find that if I put it on dry air (suck out that damned humidity), low fan with wind directed away from me and around 24 degrees it is not a problem. But we also keep the door open so as not to let the room get too cold.
Anna, do you use a "towelkette" on your bed in summer? I thought they were wierd when I first found out about them (through a gift from m-i-l) but now I think they are great. |

LOL!! If you can actually have a choice between a/c and just a fan...you really don't have hot, sticky weather!! It was 104F here today, gets only in the low 80's at night. We sleep with the a/c AND the fan on high.

A towelkette is a cross between a towel and a blanket! Basically it is a lightweight terry towel that is blanket sized. Japanese sleep on/in/under terry towelling during summer to give a bit of protection from breezes and also because of its absorbption (ewww all that summer sweat). I thought they were really awful things at first but now I like them. I even have little elasticized towel covers for my pillows!! |

If it is just hot then a fan is fine to sleep with but if it is hot and humid then aircon is the only way to go. Our house has reverse cycle air conditioning so it is good for both winter and summer. Not that we have much winter here. We would probably only need the aircon running for cooling about 2 to 3 weeks of the year as we can get very hot and humid spells when there is little sea breeze. The house is quite cool by the time we go to bed so we can mostly turn the aircon off and open the window. |

I am voting for a/c!! The only time I could ever sleep with a fan and no a/c is in the late fall or early spring. Once summer gets here and that humidity kicks in....whooo baby...
All AC - all the time!!!
It was 106 yesterday!!
