Hi all,
I've never used a waterproof mascara before.I was told that it was bad for the lashes. But I notice that many of you are using them. Do they really work? Will I come back from swimming with still made-up lashes? How do you remove it? What brand?
TIA

Hey agent, up until a few years ago I used Almay waterproof mascara. It did indeed last while I was in the pool but it was bloody h@LL to remove - I had to buy the Almay makeup remover [made mostly of mineral oil] to remove it. I can't really say whether it was "bad" for my eyes or not, only that I feel much better using cosmetics without all the petrochemicals... |

Tx athena. Actually, I really don't like that Almay remover! It stung my eyes. |

I recently got a sample of Blinc Kiss Me for the first time from EDS - it's the one people go on about that forms the little tubes around your lashes, and you just remove it with a washcloth and warm water.
I applied it after I put on sunblock (foolishly) and before going swimming, so the base of my lashes had some oil/grease on them and it didn't stick there - but it did stick on the tips, even when I had rubbed my eyes in the pool and towel-dried my face, and when I checked the mirror afterwards it was still on except right at the base. I personally found it annoying to get off, but very different from normal waterproof mascara - you sort of have to "pull" it off - I'm sure another Blinc thread could go into more detail.
Also, for what it's worth, I find Burt's Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleanser to be fabulous at removing even horrid makeup like waterproof mascara or this ink-based eyeliner I have. It stings a tiny bit if I get it IN my eyes, but nothing like Almay or other products actually marketed to remove make-up specifically.
HTH! |

Waterproof mascaras can be hard on the lashes, and I've never been a fan (personally). I only wear waterproof mascara when necessary (weddings, funerals, etc.).
The polymers in waterproof mascara require oil-based products for removal, which are something else that I don't particularly like (contact lens wearer).
I've tried a sample of Dermalogica's Precleanse, which has a light texture, and removes all make-up, including long-wearing and waterproof formulations. Perhaps give it consideration, when next purchasing a make-up remover.
Good, inexpensive waterproof mascaras available in the drugstore: Covergirl Marathon Waterproof mascara, Rimmel Extra Super Lash waterproof, and L'oréal Voluminous Waterproof.
If you seek a waterproof mascara that doesn't require oil-based removers: Kiss Me Mascara.

I have to chime in about the Kiss Me mascara. If you actually swim with it you will have little spider like leg things on your eyes and face. very freaky.
I think there is a big difference between being able to cry or sweat with a mascara vs swimming. I don't think any of them are good for swimming. In fact, I keep some thing to remove eye makeup in my gym and swim bag for before swimming. I feel better just taking it all off and then reapplying after if I want to. |

Thanks for the further input guys. I do have Dermalogica precleanse though I havent't quite mastered total removal of make-up etc (and I don't wear much). Maybe it's an issue of how long I'm rubbing...dunno
I think I'll stay away from the Blinc. I am such a klutz that I'm pretty sure I'll pull off my lashes while trying to pull off the tube. Plus, it just sounds weird!!!
I may give the Rimmel a go.. However, it sounds that swimming and mascara don't go together. I was just wondering as I keep seeing recs in magazines - your basic summer must haves bla-bla-bla, good waterproof mascara, etc. |

Honestly, I HATE waterproof mascara! No matter what, it always seems to make my lashes look clumpy and dry. When I was spending a lot of time in Singapore I tried out Urban Decay's Lingerie and Galoshes--- a double-ended lash primer and waterproof top-coat. It worked well enough, however, just like other waterprrof mascaras, it did make my lashes clump and stick together quite a bit.
I have found that if I'm going to be spending a lot of time in the water and still want to look good, it's better to just skip the mascara entirely and go for waterproof eyeliner and eyeshadow. HTH! |

I'm gonna be the odd one out here but I ONLY wear waterproof mascara, and I do so 365 days/yr
I've (obviously) tried several. High end: Lancome. Drugstore: Maybelline Sky High Curves (extreme length and curl). These both have great staying power w/o feeling like cement. I use I Feel Pretty m/u remover. It's made of oils (sunflower, grape seed, sesame seed, sweet almond, jojoba, avocado) and vit E. It DOES NOT sting or bother my eyes at all (I don't wear contacts).
Regular mascara just flakes and smudges so I end up looking like a raccoon. I also tend to sweat a lot. I also don't wear any other eye m/u. HTH |

Hi tjsmom,
Have you noticed any eyelash growth with all of the oils in your remover? I like Max Factor 2000 Calories Waterproof, but not everyday.
I have thin little wimpy lashes. And have been using cold pressed castor oil at night for growth, but, now after the post about it being very bad.Maybe a new plan.

I guess I am odd man (or woman) out on this one. I love waterproof mascara!! I would never make it through a day without my mascara being gone. I, currently, use Diorshow Waterproof and have used with success LOreal Lash Out Waterproof.
I use cleansing oil to remove my makeup and it swipes my eye makeup off with no problems at all. I do not wear contacts and rarely do I get oil in my eye - it has happened a couple of times but it is not a problem for me.
I would hate to be without my waterproof mascara.

I also love waterproof mascara. I hate racoon eyes!
I find that Johnson's no more tears baby shampoo on a cotton ball removes it well. |

Hi Linda
I haven't been looking for that b/c, while my lashes aren't super long, they are pretty thick. I have thought that the IFP m/u remover MUST at least be doing something good for my lashes and eye area though. HTH |

Cat-- Bourjois used to make a BRILLIANT waterproff cream eyeshadow (I wouldn't hit the pool without it), but unofrtunately, I think it's been discontinued. Luckily, Eye stay duos cream eye shadow by Laura Gellar seems to be getting the job done--- I've taken a couple dips in the pool with it on and it hasn't budged. I wear champagne/mocha!^-^ As for eyeliners,
Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier Pencil only bills itself as water-resistant, however, it's always stayed on for me in the water (as long as I remember to not rub my eyes, lol!). I'm tellin ya what--- LG Champagne on your lid, Mocha in your crease, eyes lined with Sue Devitt Tanzania, and some shimmery SPF balm on your lips, and I promise you'll forget all about waterproof mascara!^-^ |
