Hey forum folks, I have a non-skincare question for you fellow pet lovers. I read somewhere recently that essential oils are inherently toxic to cats, because their livers are unable to metabolize them. Does anyone know if this is really true? Some seemingly non-sketchy sources like about.com have posted about this, so I'm mildly worried that I'm infecting our kitty with some of my lotions and potions. Specifically, when I anoint my boyfriend's fungus-ridden toes with a fungicidal EO blend in an olive oil base, and kitty comes over and sniffs his toes curiously, I'm kind of worried that's akin to huffing paint fumes or something. Does anyone care to weigh in about whether this is actually a threat? (There are lots more sources if you Google "essential oil cats" but the one I linked to is the most reputable IMO.) Thanks a lot! |

Maybe he's just smelling your bf's smelly feet. Cat's like smelly things.
Seriously, though, i don't think you have anything to worry about. It's not like you're letting kitty lick out an empty bottle of Whatever Oil. Smelling it wouldn't harm him either. I don't think you're in danger of poisoning your cat. |

I never ever worried about it before, but all these sites say they can't even handle inhaling EOs because their livers can't metabolize the compounds - but I just think I would've heard about this in a more widespread way if it were really true, ya know? I dunno, I'm still using the smelly toenail stuff on him for now, and I think I'll ask my vet, but it seems like the freakout is limited to mostly cat-specific websites which makes me think it's something only "pet-crazy" people are worried about. We'll see - if I can see some of the science behind it I may change my tune, but until then... |

I've always heard that there are some EOs which are safe for cats, but you should be careful as others can be dangerous. |
