I was just browsing a topic that mentioned Kiehl's was bought out by L'Oreal years ago, which I hadn't realized. (Though I do realize that L'Oreal and Estee Lauder own, like, 95% of the brands out there, so I shouldn't be surprised).
This prompted me to do a bit of Googling, and I came up with the following link:
http://www.kissandmakeup.tv/2007/08/who-owns-who-in.html
And since all such things can be temporary, here's a copy of the text:

So anyway, I thought I'd post this and also see if anyone wants to chime in with more conglomerate info. And I'll add my own two cents: Alba, Alba Botanica, Avalon Organics, and Un-Petroleum are all the same company (Avalon Natural Products). I'm mostly interested in stuff in the more natural sector, so I'm curious as to whether other members can provide info about that (i.e. are Wella, Weleda, and Dr. Hauschka related? How about Jurlique, do they have any connections with other businesses? What about high-end stuff like IS Clinical? Just curious!)
I searched for other threads about this and didn't find any hits, but I'm quite certain it's been discussed, it was just a weird vague thing to do search queries on. So if this is better reposted somewhere else, please feel free to let me know. Thanks!
Also, note to mods - any chance in making something like this a sticky? (With my luck, it probably already is, and I just didn't realize it. ) |

I wondered that myself, I don't know! I'm looking into it, though, just out of curiosity... AHA!

I don't think Chanel is owned by Bourjois.
When I read that post I had to go a lookin.

Miss Coco herself would not be too pleased if another Frenchman/woman bought her out. |

Hm, to clarify, I think the textiles portions of companies like Chanel and Armani are different than the cosmetics - I believe this list refers only to the cosmetic stuff. I have no idea if this is a 100% accurate list or not, but I do believe that most companies have a different subsidiary when they start up a skincare or makeup line. I would not be surprised if that list were wrong about Chanel being owned by Bourjois, but I would also not be surprised if it were right but it only referred to the fragrance and makeup portion. Same with Armani. Anyone know for sure about this? I'm not very savvy at business searches like this, so I'd love for someone who knows finance/etc. to weigh in! |

Hm, I wonder if that's true - do you recall where you heard that? It just seems like Decleor is SO Parisian, and Shisedo so not... but who knows, it seems everyone is in someone's pocket these days. |

A TV make-up artist once told me that Chanel owns Bourjois and the Bourjois make-up is exactly the same as the more expensive Chanel range! |

Ah, indeed, at least they say it overtly SOMEWHERE unlike most of these brands! Thanks for the heads up. Man, we should re-make our own list, I guess! |

Bliss used to be owned by LVMH, now owned by Starwood Hotels. I don't know if that goes for BlissLabs. |

I think the diversity in what labels can belong to one company makes sense. You get a spectrum of products/along with big or little price tags and that can only mean that the company makes money off of each economic base. |

Don't get disappointed. Decleor was actually acquired by Shiseido some time ago, because they want to increase their market share in professional skincare. I believe they do not change the formulas of Decleor products. They only want to have a well known brand in that sector. |

It's the fashion business that you're talking about. Armani fragrances and cosmetics are actually owned by L'Oreal. Hence, I never liked Armani fragrances and cosmetics. Heard that Armani has launched his skincare... it's another crap from L'Oreal. |

For me, it won't make a HUGE dent, since I already mostly avoid the cosmetics giants. But for stuff like the Chanel/Bourjois duo, I know I'll think twice about purchasing Chanel now! |

The finance sheet that I read mentioned cosmetics as well as fashion. I don't want to split hairs over it though. I love Armani makeup and won't think twice about repurchasing. |

I think it's super-complicated figuring out which portions of what businesses belong to whom anyway - I'm just interested to know about general details. And I do agree that if something works for you, you should use it despite the merger, etc! For example, Redken All Soft if totally my hair's dream come true for straightening it, and the fact that they're not independently owned doesn't make me change my thinking about buying their stuff. If it ain't broke, and all that. |
