Hi everyone:
I while back I posted a query about products for curly hair. I recently got a digital perm and I've never had curly hair in my life so I'm learning how to live with it.
One thing that I learned rather quickly was that I have to wash less often to reduce dryness; however, I find that my hair becomes really tangly and less attractive when I don't wash everyday. Plus, it doesn't feel as "clean" at the roots. Can anyone recommend a product that can revitalize/detangle my hair in between washes?
Do curly haired girls comb their hair after it is dry? I find that I can't run a comb through it at all because it'll turn into a fluffy mess. How do curly haired curls untangle their hair in the morning then?
Thanks! |

Hey LL!
I am learning to live with wave/curl as I have recently grown my very short hair out and have the somewhat awkward task of becoming reacquainted with the natural texture. During this process I have come across several tips on getting the most out of your curls, I'll list them below.
-Use a SLS free shampoo, after your scalp adjusts to not having to produce so much extra oil you should be able to go longer between washing without getting or feeling the "grungies".
-Because you have chemically processed your hair you will need a really great deep conditioner. LOREAL Natures Therapy Mega Moisture Nurturing Creme is a good one, cheap and very effective. You might also want to look into LOREAL Ineral Hair Fixer, its like bond-o for your hair, really great stuff. You should deep condition biweekly or whenever if you feel necessary. Also rinse in cold water.
-Use a wide tooth comb (with teeth at least 1/2 an inch apart.) and nothing else on your hair, meaning ditch all brushes. Brushing curly hair creates massive frizz. Also lots of touching is a no-no. You will separate curls and make your hair oily.
-As far as styling goes I guess thats up to personal taste but heat styling is no good. It will dry your curls out like the dickens. Which leads me to my next tip--plunking. Okay, sounds weird I know but stay with me. Here is a video explaining the technique. People swear by it, I use pin curls to achieve a similar effect because my hair is still too short for the method.
-Again styling products are a personal choice (not to mention climate based) but I really love the rumpled just had a roll in the hay curls so I use Jonathan's Dirt Texturizing paste. It builds volume but gives lots of great texture at the same time, plus it smells amazing. Its the only styling product I use.
Thats about it, if I think of anything else I'll let you know. |

I agree with vonstella: a good deep conditioner is a must for curly hair. I've been using Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Balm for a couple of years now -- I can't live without it!
To dry my hair, I use a diffuser on low heat. I'll style my hair and won't touch it the rest of the day.
Like vonstella said, styling products are a personal choice and which you choose will largely depend on your hair (is it fine, thick, coarse, etc...). I tend to change my products depending on the season: I'll use cream-based products in the winter and gel-based ones in the summer. |

I confess I wash almost every day. I have thick, curly hair and I cannot stand it the next day. It is a tangled mess.
I use a wide tooth comb on it when I get out of the shower and then shake it into place. I try not to touch it anymore after that.
On a rare occasion, I have been able to dampen my hair and wear it a second day but I am usually sick of it before the day is over!!

Combing curly hair AFTER it's dry is Cardinal Sin #1 in the curly girl handbook
For a wealth of info go to naturallycurly.com - it's THE forum for curly girls. In addition to Vonstella's "plunking", the technique I use to get second day hair is putting my hair up in a "pineapple"! You essentially bend over at the waist so your hair is pointed to the floor and put it in a loose, soft pony tail on top of your head. Sleep like this and the next am shake it out, lightly spritz with water (I also use a spray gel for smoothness) and gentley reshape the curls.
Understanding curly hair and hair to take care of it is opposite of everything we were taught when we were young. Do go the the website and it'll save you a ton of frustration.
PS I haven't combed my hair at all in >5 mos, haven't had a hair cut in >9 mos, and haven't used a blow dryer in >8 mos That said, my hairdresser told me my hair's in the best condition she's seen it in in 9 yrs |

I, too, have not used a hair dryer on my hair in ages. That has helped tremendously!! On the rare occasion when I chi iron my hair (for a different look), I do dry my hair first.
I may have to try the pineapple method.. see if I can make it through without having to rewash every day.
I use very conditioning, moisturizing shampoos and conditioners so I think that is what keeps my hair healthy.
I admit, while I usually enjoy my curls, I do sometimes look at folks with beautiful, glossy straight hair and think...I wish my hair would do that!

Its truly amazing the amount of damage heat causes! My hair looks so much better since I stopped and I style it in a fraction of the time. |

Wow! Thanks for everyone's feedback. I can't imagine not combing my hair for more then one day let alone 5 months! But I can definitely see how leaving my curly hair alone will cause less damage.
Even when I had stick straight hair (from Japanese straightening) I slept with my hair in a superhigh pony tail every night so I have continued doing that with my curly hair, but every morning is a bit of a struggle to get my curls to look like they do when I first wash my hair. It usually ends up looking messy, tangled, and frizzy.
Thanks again for everyone's feedback and I'll definitely update everyone on how I'm learning to live with my hair! |

try sleeping with your hair in a loose braid...and I always have to use a couple of clippies to cover up spots where the curls have gotten wonky on day 2.
I also have not brushed my hair in years, but take into account that people with naturally curly hair often have coarse, slippery hair that does not tangle. I can just finger comb my hair, whereas my friends with finer hair get terrible knots. |
