...so I've never really gotten into paying attention to what I put on my face until I found this forum (yes, that means last week). Before, I really bought into fads, expensive products that don't work, etc. I just went out and listened (and believed!) sales pitches.
Anyway...I'm quickly getting bogged down with all these different reviews, suggestions, and new products to try.
What do you believe are the basics to a skin care routine?
I just put in my first order to EDS which comprised of:
Decleor Ylang Ylang oil
Dr H Cleansing Cream
Decleor Purete Mattifying Skin Fluid
I also bought Yon-Ka get nettoyant for my cleanser (from another site because I'm in the US).
In my cart currently:
Decleor Lip balm
JB Green Apple Peel
I'm finding all these good ideas and suggestions but I'm quickly finding I'm building a rather large arsenal of products I'm not sure I need.
What do you do in your routine?
Cleanse, tone, serum or moisturizer?
Cleanse, skip tone, peel (once a week? 2x a week?), serum? No serum? Oil treament like decleor?
Help! I'm lost.

It depends on how your skin is. I have acneic skin so I can't use moisturizers as EVERYTHING is either too moisturizing OR too drying. I use serums instead - also they help HEAL my problematic/irritated skin. But if you don't have problematic skin then I don't think you really NEED a serum unless you're fighting the anti-age battle. From your routine, since you already have the peel in your cart I'd suggest you need a mask. I have a moisturizing one (I don't use it regularly, I use it whenever I feel my skin needs some hydration) and a purifying one (which I do use regularly because of my skin type). I think you should have both types lying around when you need them. Perhaps find a purifying one with moisturizing properties (I think some people on EDS like Decleor's Clay and Herbal Mask). I think purifying masks are good to do regularly to keep your skin clean - same type of usage as the JB apple peel, using it 1x or 2x a week.
Here is my routine:
am: Cleanse, tone, oil, O2, serum, eye gel, Juvenil + creme 15 (I mix these 2 products together)
pm is the same except I don't use creme 15 and I use my Decleor balm after my Juvenil
My treatments (peel/mask) always comes after my cleansers. After I rinse I ALWAYS follow with my toner which soothes, cleanses off any excess, and tones/closes up my pores after the treatment. I think toner is pretty impt although not all agree. After my toner I follow my usual regime.

I'm 37, have combo skin (clogged/congested pores in tzone, cheeks are more dry), some pigmented spots, and dark circles.
Currently I'm using:
AM:
JB Green Apple Cleanser, PSF 02 Serum, Dermalogica Multi Vitamin Power Firm Eye & Lip, PSF Balancing Oil (tzone), PSF Vit C Serum 20%, then depending on what I feel like, either PSF Moisture Balancing Lotion, topped up with PSF Herbal Sunscreen SPF30 OR Dermalogica Sheer Moisture Tint in Light.
PM:
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel (with the Clarisonic Face Brush), PSF 02 Serum, Dermalogica Power Firm Eye & Lip, PSF Balancing Oil (Tzone), PSF Retinol Nite 1%, and if I need it ... PSF Moisture Balancing Lotion where I might feel dry.
Once a week each: JB Green Apple Peel, PSF Pumpkin Enzyme Peel, and sometimes the Dermalogica Skin Refining Masque in my tzone before "that time of month".
Sometimes I'll also use a drop of JB Blemish Serum on any breakouts.
My skin does seem better since using this routine, but I still experience breakouts in my tzone and seem to have congested pores. I've been on this routine for only a few weeks, so I'm hoping my skin will get better as time goes on. I would like to add a product to help my pigmented areas lighten more, but I want to get my skin behaving first before I add anything else. |

Moonstarr - how are you liking the PSF retinol 1%? Is it helping with the oil or pores at all? Thanks. |

I do like it ... I noticed when I first started using it that there was some slight peeling going on around my chin area ... so I was excited because I thought that the peeling might help my pores become unclogged. I do think it's helped a bit (for instance, right below each corner of my mouth I have noticed a decrease in tiny blackheads .. and that's exactly where it seemed to peel the most. Note: now that my face has adjusted to this product, I don't see the visible peeling anymore, but I am also being very good about keeping my face exfoliated). My face still has a way to go though. I don't think it cut back on oil ... I was never super oil to begin with, but obviously oily enough that I'm getting blackheads and congested pores. I find the cream does seem a little "oily" itself when I put it on, but I wouldn't say I've broken out more since using it. I think it's only been a few weeks since I started using it (along with the other products) so time will tell.
I am really happy with everything I'm using ... my skin was making a slow progress towards looking better UNTIL it was a week before that time of the month. So this past week I've gotten more blemishes and I was so frustrated that I started to mess with them ... and well, you know ... BUT I can also say that the PSF 02 Serum really does seem to do a good job of healing up all that mess I just made of my face! |

Well I've been using Lancome's Sensation Totale in the daytime (way before I discovered EDS) and I used this only because it was the only product EVER that gave me the right amount of moisture, and it actually helped control SOME oil throughout the day - it's a time-release vit C product.
For nighttime I use Clarin's Bright-Plus Serum which I wrote a review on. It helped a lot in speeding up the healing of my red/brown marks left by acne (I have too many of those because my face is SOOO susceptible to getting them regardless of me touching the acne or not).
However I'm going to discontinue use after I finish both bottles and switching to Skinceuticals. I plan to buy serum 20 (vit C) for daytime and the Phyto Corrective Gel for nighttime. You can find more info on the Phyto Corrective Gel if you do a search on EDS, many members have found it to help with pigmentation and acneic skin. |

It's hard to say ... I don't think I've seen any huge results with it. I still use it as a spot treatment, although since I've been breaking out more this past week, I think I used it too much and areas started to get dry and peel a bit. I'll probably keep using it because I'm sure it doesn't hurt, but I don't think for me it's really done anything super impressive. I know alot of others have had great experiences with it though. I guess it just depends on your skin.
I definitely notice the PSF 02 Serum is very effective for me in clearing existing open blemishes (like the ones I've messed with too much. ) |

Thanks moonstar - it sounds like the Retinol would probably be mild enough for me then. I just hope it's not going to be too oily though. I ordered it last week so we'll see... |

I have oily hormonal-chin-acne-prone skin, so i place great importance on cleansing, as i can't stand the thought of anything clogging my pores.
Cleansing:
1) Dermalogica PreCleanse as makeup remover
2) Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser
3) Clarisonic face brush
I don't tone as I believe the Clarisonic eliminates whatever residue I have left on my face.
Moisturize with JB Nutrient moisturizer in AM, Skyn Iceland Oxygen Infusion Night Cream (love!) in PM.
Spot treat with Renee Rouleau's Anti-Cyst Treatment for acne on chin.
Once a week, aspirin mask with honey, aloe and tea tree oil.
Skin status: smooth, even textured, uncongested, smaller pores |

I think that no matter what your skin type, there are 4 very important steps for happy skin:
- thorough cleansing
- exfoliation
- hydration
- spritzing
I vary my cleansers by the time of day, the season, what it needs to do (ie remove make-up or grime from a day outside or just a quick refresh) or even by my hormonal cycle. Consequently I tend to own about 5 cleansers at any given time.
Exfoliation does not necessarily mean you have to scrub-a-dub-dub. Again, the trick is finding what works best for your skin - gentle gel exfoliation, manual scrubs, enzyme peels, or microdermabrasion. All have their place. I have 4 types of exfoliation here a mask that dries to be exfoliated off, an enzyme peel, a manual scrub, and a microdermabrasion style. Again, I "listen" to my skin and use accordingly. As a rule, I would say to leave 2 nights between each exfoliation (though some treatments are definately once-a-week jobs)
Hydration: even the oiliest skin needs hydration. There a lots of products out there that will hydrate any skin type.
Spritzing: I am the spritzing queen. I love them and have 3 or 4 different ones on the go at a time. Besides a basic mineral water version that is great to apply under serums (better slip) or on top of a cleanser for emulsifying, I like to keep some "treatment" spritzers - a wake up, soother, hydrator, or refresher. All depends on the skin type.
That being said, my slightly dehydrated, combination skin currently enjoys:
AM: The Organic Pharmacy Rose Gel Cleanser
IS Clinical Super Serum
Remergent DNA Repair
Suisse Programme Firming Eye Gel
Cellcosmet Ultra Eye Gel
PM: Cellcosmet Gel Cleanser/Activator Gel/Active Tonic
Cellcosmet Ultra Eye Gel
Then I rotate my routine:
DAY 1 (A): IS Clinical Active Serum + HydraCool (or Remergent Barrier Repair)
DAY 2 (B): Amino Genesis Tripetinon
DAY 3 (C): Exfoliation followed by L'Occitane Immortelle Oil (or Remergent Refoliator)
DAY 4 (A) again
DAY 5 (B) again
DAY 6 (C) again
DAY 7 Rest day: I do a rich cleanse and no treatment
In winter, this will change again, as I will need a cream on top of the treatments because the air is so dry here.
I do have other products that I add in from time to time or other cleansers that I use, but the above are my staples at the moment. |

Wow...so much great advice!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Does anyone think that I'd be able to use a serum with the Decleor Ylang Ylang oil? Or would that be too much?
And I'm kinda lost on whether or not I should buy the ylang ylang balm too or the essential balm. Or maybe just a serum?
AHHHH! Digging the hold deeper for myself!

ParisTroika, I am not sure what your skin type is (looking at your product list I am guessing a bit oily), but that is what would decide which (if any) balm or serum you need. Looking at what you have already bought and/or have in your cart you are starting out good.
I imagine you are planning to use as follows:
AM:
Yon-Ka gel nettoyant
Decleor Purete Mattifying Skin Fluid
PM:
Dr H Cleansing Cream (though you might want to alternate it every other day with the Yon-Ka)
Decleor Ylang Ylang oil
Every 3rd night (ie skip 2 nights between) Green Apple Peel (or skip 3 nights between if skin is a bit sensitive)
You might want to get yourself a nice mist: try PSF cucumber and Caudalie grape water.. Both are quite inexpensive. Use the PSF as a toner in the morning or even misting during the day to freshen up.
Use the caudalie on your face before applying the Ylang Ylang oil at night (this will help it "slip" over your skin much better).
If you think you need more hydration at night, then sure, try a Decleor balm. I suggest you ask for some sample tubes in your next EDS order. I love the Rose one (more for senstive skins) and the Ylang Ylang is lovely too. You would apply this OVER the oil.
Remember, following the principles of Dr. H. you dont need ANYTHING on the skin at night (gives it time to rest so the good doctor says) - therefore, if you get enough moisture from the Ylang Ylang oil, then there is no need to add anything else.
As for day time, how do YOU feel about your skin? Do you need to even out your skintone? Then try adding a Vit. C serum....If you are young and no specific damage, then you could try a general antioxidant serum (like Juice Beauty - that would also give you some vitamin C). If you have a "condition" you would like to address (uneven tone, dehydration, redness, etc.) then I am sure there are lots of serums people can recommend to you.
The only other thing that I would recommend (that is not on your list) is a nice mask targeting your concerns. The Decleor range has some lovely masks. The herb and clay one is especially nice, particularly if your skin is a bit on the oily side. |

I love all the wonderful posts about different products here. I have recently been struggling with small clogged pores (which I have not had in the past) Since nothing is different with my routine...I am wondering a solution. I have tried different masks, etc...but it seems like I always have them lately (when I squeeze them, I KNOW!) to extract them, they are little stringy white "clog" (I don't know how else to put it). Are these whiteheads? Blackheads? don't look like either...just junk. How do I have so much "junk" when I am religious about cleaning my skin? Any recommendations to clean the "JUNK" out? Something has to work to "scrub" that stuff out? I really want to take a wire brush to my face, scrap off the first layer of skin, which should remove them..and start fresh. HELP? |

bergquis, when you take off your cleanser, try using a muslin cloth. I find that my nose is SO much clearer when I use mine every night (I use the Eve Lom ones). I used to have the same problem with my nose.. one moment it would be clear and then it was like "whammy"! and I would be left wondering how gunk could have got in the pores so quickly. I have not noticed the problem for a while now, so maybe it is my new cleansing routine, I am not sure.. |

i share my cleanser with Tiger ... (i mean, i also use EveLom). it improved a lot the black-head-situation of my nose (i think, the cloth is very important).
but somehow it looks as ISC active serum had the opposite effect : there're fierce little blackhads when i apply it, again and again - even if it was "virginally" clean before.
so i "clear" it manually quite often - haven't found any other solution yet (probably should stop looking into the magnifying mirror . . .) |

This is great info for me...I really appreciate it!
I have no specific damage that I would need a particular serum...I do get some redness. The biggest thing that bothers me currently is my oiliness during the day and my blemishes that pop up.
Honestly, I can't imagine NOT putting stuff on my face at night...I've done it for years (acne meds).
Not plopping stuff on my blemishes or potential problems areas might take some getting used to! |

if you still have oiliness problems even with the Decleor, you might want to try the face OILS that target that (they are balancing oils). PSF do one and so does Dr. Hauschka. I just got hubby to buy me Dr. H when he was in Germany but have not tried it yet.
One other thing I have just been using a sample of and love is Valmont Nature in a Serum. It is an oil-free hydrating serum (I got a great 2ml pump sample with my last EDS order). I have been using this for 4 days now and no problems with shinies during the day so I am a happy camper. I will do a review this weekend on it. |

I have been using Nature's serum for a year+ (have written a review for it a while ago). It's not enough moisture alone but if you have oily skin and use a moisturizer it helps the absorption of your moisturizer significantly. The texture is like water and absorbs very quickly. I currently use my serums AND my decleor oil, it wouldn't be too much. I find the decleor ylang ylang doesn't really provide moisture - it's the strongest oils I've tried. I would assume Dr.H and PSF oils are more "oily", like they probably provide more moisture. If you can't stop yourself from putting anything on at night, I would suggest you go with a Decleor balm - they are wonderful Btw, according to manslayerliz and other members Jurlique's Silk dust is good at controlling oilies |

very simple routine for me...too lazy
i have normal/dry/slightly oily skin in t-zone
A.M.
1) cleanse with cetaphil
2) PSF Vit c
3) moisturize - often la roche posay sensitive
4) la roche posay sunscreen
P.M.
1)cleanse with IOPE (korean brand)- isn't too drying so i like it
2) sometimes use Dermalogica powder exfoliator stuff (can't remember name) - but it is drying so I only use it on my forehead where i tend to have some clogging
3) moisturize with la roche posay
(still looking for my holy grail moisturizer that does more than just moisturize). |

I mainly use Cellcosmet name brand but in the summer, I could skip my moisturizer and just apply sunblock. I used to use Sonya Dakar Omega 3 oil and maybe Decleor Ylang Ylang oil would be good and read recently that jojoba oil is excellent.
After I wash my face with Cetaphil or Cellcosmet cream cleanser, I apply my Vivier Vitamin C, then Omega 3 oil, then my sunblock. I also do daily, sometimes twice a day exfoliation. |
