I use Dr. H's clay mask and like it a lot but am wondering whether I could just buy clay and be done with it?
Does anybody have a recommendation? What are good types of clay etc? No cat litter recommendation, though!  |

Hi Agent OO-CAT,
I use French Green Clay. Why? Because at the time it was the only one I could get my grubby little paws on! 
That said, I really like it.  I mix all sorts of things with it ... from my Pearl Paste to egg whites to Molasses!

Hi Cat,
Well ... I don't know if it's from France or not ... but it is green! And yes, when I put on a mask of it ... I feel like Kermit the Frog ... so perhaps that's why they call it "French Green Clay"? 
I got it at a little bulk food store in Brantford called The General Store [don't we have catchy store names in the Brantford area?]
I'm sure there are lots of other places that have it ... it's jarred by NOW foods ... so I imagine you can get it just about anywhere. 
I think they have Red Clay and some other colours ... but The General Store in Brantford just carried the Green.

Hi ladies, I have a big tub of 100% bentonite clay [powder] mined from Death Valley, CA. The manufacturer is Aztec Secrets, same supplier I obtained Kukui Nut oil from.
I find that when I mix a couple teaspoons of this clay with Apple Cider Vinegar [ACV], it makes an effective monthly mask but it leaves my skin too tight. Any ideas what else I can mix with this?

I love, love, love bentonite. I personally have an oily t-zone that's acne prone.
If the acv alone leaves your skin too tight, I would try it with acv and yogurt. I make a bentonite/acv for my t-zone and bentonite/acv/yogurt for the rest of my face/neck. |

| I buy my clays from essentialwholesale.com and make my own masques. The rhassoul clay is also fabulous in body polish. They give a full description of each different kind of clay that you might find useful. |

Hi Pooh, if you have dry, dehydrated skin bentonite clay may be a little too drying for you.

ailurophile, thanks for the tip about yogurt - I usually spritz on some Thayers Witch Hazel with Rosehips to soothe skin after applying this mask, but the yogurt sounds yummy!

| I love making my own masks. I use different types of clays mixed with extracts, hydrosols and essential oils but I have yet to find clays that really impress me. I am still using up a bunch of different clays I got from a a bulk supplier one year but they aren't the greatest quality. I need to keep sampling some stuff out there to really pick a winner. |

| I made a mask tonight with Fullers clay, yogurt and aloe vera gel, left it on about 15 minutes, cannot beleive how soft and hydrated my skin felt afterward. This is a winner mask! |

| i have pretty sensitive, oily skin... i really loved the effects of using pink clay mixed with a bit of honey (saturated just enough to make a paste). i bought my clay from http://www.scentsanctuary.ca/ (really wonderful lady). very cheap stuff... made my skin look really refreshed and "dewy". |

I like using Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay (bentonite clay from Death Valley) http://aztec-secret.com/Clay.htm (that you can usually get at Whole Foods) with apple cider vinegar (the best is raw with the "mother" in it [looks like a spider web floating in the liquid]). Added to the vinegar, it fizzes and really does work well. As they say on their website: "Feel your face pulsate!" 
I've tried Coso Green Clay (it's 100% pure montmorillonite from Magick Botanicalswww.magickbotanicals.com) I got from Whole Foods as well but I didn't feel it pulled as much / worked as well. But it might be milder and better for extra sensitive skin.
The color of the clay comes from the earth - the minerals in it.
Someone mentioned NOW Foods clay. I haven't used it but you can get NOW Foods products, including clay (they have Morrocan red clay, French green clay, and bentonite), online atwww.thecatalog.com. I know because I've ordered Lavilin cream (my favorite natural deodorant) from them [it's hard to find nowadays]. They also sell seeds for sprouting - also hard for me to find locally. |
