Hoping someone can help? My husband works outdoors and sunburns regularly. It's not that he hates wearing sunscreen, but rather can't find one that doesn't drive him nuts after a few hours. He starts sweating, gets itchy and develops a rash. By the end of the day, he's ended up with his (clean-shaven) beard area covered in little bumps, many of which surface as whiteheads by the next day. I don't know what ingredient/s causing it, because he'd rather suffer the sunburn than undertake a battery of experiments.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a moisturiser with decent spf rating that will make it through a hardworking day without reacting badly to sweat and causing skin irritations, please?

He uses an electric shaver, cleanses with Dermalogica special cleansing gel and moisturises with Dermalogica smoothing cream. Ideally, I'd like him to replace the Dermalogica moisturiser with an spf-laden substitute, rather than add another step of sunscreen (the more steps in the regime, the less likely he is to stick to it). And if it also has a bit of anti-aging juju, that would would go down a treat!

That said, if anyone has a sunscreen recommendation that would fit the bill, that could still be really helpful to mr. ej, as I'd rather he go without the moisturiser than the sun protection.

I would try a physical sunblock rather than a chemical sunscreen. Megan Gale invisible zinc junior is good. I think it has an SPF of 30.

vonstella, thanks for the suggestion. I see from your signature that you use this. Would you recommend it for use on a daily basis, or is it something you'd use only occasionally?

I use it everyday on my body but not on my face. It doesnt layer well under makeup, hopefully your husband wont have that problem though! Wink BTW its not a moisturizer its just a sunblock. Look into Dr. LeWinns natural sunblock if he wants some moisture.

Ha! Great recommendations, thank you. I think I might get him both. I'm sure he can manage experimenting with two different products. And I can always use them if they don't work out on him.

you could also invest in a wide brimmed hat. Guapaboy refuses to wear sunscreen because it makes him sticky so he uses hats instead.

thanks, guapagirl. I haven't actually tried the hat approach, mainly because his job is very active. But I guess that's one of the uses for elastic, hey? He also finds headwear irritating, but he seems to miss the point that skin cancer and grafts are probably a bit more irritating than any of the prevention alternatives available. Confused . I'll follow vonstella's suggestions, and your idea of the hat is worth a try, too. Maybe if I pick it, he'll wear it. I can tell him it looks hot!

I would say use sunscreen, too. I've been using Kinesys sunscreen for over a year. I have oily, dehydrated, acne prone skin and kept having trouble finding sunscreen that doesn't feel greasy or icky for quite a while. Kinesys seems to be the answer for me.

www(dot)kinesysstore(dot)com/DisplayProducts.asp?criteria=16136
www(dot)backpackgeartest(dot)org/reviews/Health & Safety/Sunscreens/KINeSYS Sunscreen Products/Lynne Durham/Field Report/

(sorry, you need to substitute "(dot)" with "." Apparently I'm too new to this forum to post links)

I found it at MEC where they sell stuff for outdoorsy people. It has worked pretty well. It's a spray type of sunscreen. When you apply it, for the first 1~2 minutes, you sort of feel "a bit" oily on the face. After the 1~2 minutes, you don't really feel it on your face. It doesn't even make your face feel/appear oily. Great isn't it? I've never experienced sunscreen or sunblock that feels so "light" on the face as Kinesys Fragrance-free Sunscreen Spray with Parsol 1789. It's SPF 30, oil-free, alcohol-free, fragrance-free, PABA-free, and water and sweat resistant, doesn't plug the pores. I'm so surprised to find sunscreen that works for me at an outdoor store rather than department store or fancy skin care product lines. Not to mention the price is reasonable Wink

So it's just my two cents recommendation. I've tried other sunscreen at drugstore (such as Shopper's Drug Mart), and Peter Thomas Roth ultra-lite oil-free sunblock spf 30 based on EDS lady's recommendation based on my skin type. None of them work until I've found Kinesys. So hope this information helps you, too.

autumnApple, thank you for your suggestion, too. I've checked to see if it's available here in Australia, and it is. I might end up with a battery of stuff for him after all. He'd probably like the spray and the sports packaging of this one. Still, I don't mind - much better to find something he'll use than suffer the side-effects.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. Think I have enough to go on now. Mr ej is getting three products and a hat!
