I had all my wisdoms teeth and one regular molar pulled out yesterday. Everything was fine until i woke up this morning after having a dream about eating something and i realized i had swallowed one of the cotton gauze i had in my mouth!

i tried contacting Johnson & Johnson, the company that makes the cotton gauze and they referred me to the poison control center. they said i needed to see a doctor. so i called the emergency room and they referred me to my dentist (who i have been trying to call all morning). he hasn't picked up and i am worried.

i did some google searches and read that dogs are fed cotton balls when they eat shattered glass so the cotton can enclose the sharp pieces and make them safe to pass through.

any thoughts??????? I feel fine but i am worried Embarassed Crying or Very sad.

I can't figure out why the emergency room would refer you to your dentist.

I would try not to worry too much. Cotton is a natural fiber and not toxic. Be mindful of how you feel, though. If you have stomach pain, definitely go to the doctor.

Feel better!

Ugh, that sucks! I used to have my tongue pierced, and I once swallowed the little ball that screws the piercing down in my sleep. Sad Grossest thing EVER. Needless to say, that horrible, ill-thought-out, youthful-reckless-mistake piercing came right out then and there. But I'll never forget the feeling of waking up gagging, knowing I'd swallowed a piece of metal, and not being able to do anything about it.

Point is, I think you're fine with cotton. Smile I agree that it's a natural fiber and will probably just pass right through you. It's no fun, but I'm sure it won't be harmful. Good luck with your recovery -- I was miserable after getting my wisdom teeth out. No real reason, I just hated it! Here's hoping you can chew again soon.

LOL at skin care addict's fiber joke, though. Can't help it. Wink

Thanks everyone! i feel better, i am not sure if it came out as i don't want to check!

Ginnielizz, did the little ball come out the other end or did you barf it out? i almost induced myself to hurl up the cotton but the poison control person i was talking to, said i might choke.

I wouldn't worry much about it, Kristen. I think it will come out as there's no way your body could digest and use it. hehe If you ever get brave enough to look, you'd probably see it. It might already have come out when you weren't looking. Very Happy

Oh my! Laughing That is really something. I think you will just have a hard time going to the washroom. That is about it.

Have you ever swalled gum by accident? I think it would be the same thing. Embarassed

I would recommend drinking lots and lots of water for the next few days to keep everything moving!

Think of this as your pre-Thanksgiving detox!! Bad Grin

Let's just say I don't know one way or another, and I'm kind of okay with that. Smile I already have titanium pins in my right knee from surgery, so I figure that has to amount to more metal mass than this tiny ball. Either way, I'm not worried -- I had completely forgotten about that until this thread! Laughing
