I picked these up at Wal-Mart about a month ago. I bought is on whim, but admit I really like them both.
First the pen: I love the french manicure look, but don't like how fake it looks on long acrylic nails. I have short nails and over the years I've tried French Manicure 'kits' with little success. I can never get that line neat and I was never really happy with the effort it took to look 'ok'.
Well, in comes the SH FM Pen. I love it!
It comes in two different sizes. Since I have short nails I bought the pure white with a 'fine tip'. WOW! It was so easy to do!
Getting the tip saturated with the polish took a bit, but once it was good and soaked I haven't had any issues with it.
It makes a nice thin white line exactly where I like it and I have the Sally Hensen Hard as Wraps clear polish that works nicely over the top to lock the color on my nail.
The Hard as wraps has really helped my nails stop peeling or cracking. I have soft nails and they do not grow much beyond the tip of my fingers without peeling, but since I started using the Hard as Wraps, my nails are stronger and I have more of a tip for the white too! A true Win-Win!
So if you like French Manicures and are not coordinated then try this pen. It works great on toes too!
I love the look of a thin line on my short nails and it doesn't matter how short the nail is because the fine tip can put a little color on the edge and make it look like I have a nail tip even when my nail may have peeled too low.
Plus, the hard as wraps really helps make my nails harder (unlike the Hard as Diamonds polish I tried). This one works! As long as I keep it on my nails, they grow longer and don't peel and are harder to bend.
Both products work great and do as promised. |

I tried the sally hansen french manicure pen as well and didn't find it so terrific. It was thick and chipped easily- and when I put clear nail polish over top (when the white liquid of the pen had completely dried) it made the white run. But I'm glad its working for you. |

I've tried every French manicure kit known to man, including the SH pen. None of them worked for me. (too clumsy with non-dominant hand, tape left a raised ridge, generally too time-consuming and messy). Visits to the salon are too frequent, time consuming and expensive. I love the look of a "natural" French manicure. Pure white tips are too unnatural looking. So, here's what I do:
1. Clean nails thoughly.
2.Apply 1 coat of nail of adhesion base coat(Sally Hanson).
3. Apply one coat of clear nail protector. Let dry thoroughly.
4.Cut small strips of gentle paper tape (I use Nexcare) and apply them firmly to the nail, exposing the area where you want the nail to show as white.
5. Apply as many THIN coats of white/off white tip color as needed. Allow the tip color to DRY THOROUGHLY between coats.
6. When all is COMPLETELY dry, peel off the tape and apply 1 or 2 top coats.
I use Orly French Manicure for the tips, it's not blindingly white, very natural looking.
It's very important to let each coat dry thoroughly and don't apply too much white polish to the tip, it will cause a ridge where the tape meets the nail. I do this while watching something engrossing on TV so I'm not tempted to "get busy" with my hands and ruin the polish. |

Thanks for all the "tips," ladies! This non-coordinated girl now has some hope for an at-home french manicure. ![Smile](images/smiles/smile.gif) |

Sorry to hear the SH FM pen hasn't worked out for others, but for me its a keeper (this duo anyway).
Update: I think the key is in the clear polish used.
I also have an Orly FM kit. While I loved the colors, the effort was too much for me. Back to my point....I used my SH FM pen with the Orly Beverly Hills sheer natural top coat and wouldn't you know it? It chipped within a day!
I haven't had that issue using the Hard as Wraps clear polish. So I think you need a really heavy duty top coat to 'lock' on any white used.
You def. can not use the SH FM pen on its own as it will come off, but I've had that happen with the Orly too.
As mentioned above, I think a couple thin coats (allowed to dry completely) helps prevent chipping, but I'm way too impatient for that. I just like swipping on a thin coat of white and one coat of the hard as wraps and be done!
Of the two, I'd say the Hard as Wraps is the real 'rave' and the SH FM pen works really well with it.
Note: I have tried other SH products meant to harden nails. One was in a blue bottle (name escapes me) that is used for 7 days removed and then you start over again and another one that had fibers in it that you apply in two different directions (which made my nails dull looking).
For what it's worth: The Hard as Wraps gives me a clear shiny look AND it actually stops my nails from peeling. I am impressed with this product where others from SH have fallen flat.
I will def re-purchase the Hard as Wraps polish! I think I will try a colored one next time I'm at Wal-mart.
Determined: That is an awesome tip with the tape! I will have to try it some time! Thanks!! |

What is Nexcare paper tape? Where do you buy it? |

I might give the 'hard as wraps' a go, because my nails don't grow past the tip of my fingers either- they always peel once they get to a certain length
Then if that works for me I can try the manicure pen. Woohoo! |
