Hi

Does anyone have a recipe for a diy HA serum, and if so what do you think of it? Is it better in your opinion to buy one ready made? Are there any recommendations for a particular brand. Any feedback would be appreciated.

TIA Ricky

I make my own HA serum:

1g HA container from GOW (Bioengineered)
150mL purified (sterile) water
0.75mL Germaben II (preservative)

It's near identical to commerical HA serums for a fraction of the price. They key is to have a container about 2x or more of the volume. I just use a 1/2L bottle to mix everything into. start w/water and add the preservative cap bottle, SHAKE well till blended. add the HA little by little. Add a bit, cap bottle, SHAKE. repeat till the HA powder is all mixed into the liquid. The serum will be full of bubbles but let it sit for a 1/2 day and it will look like normal HA serum.

Maiea, Can you list the website of GOW. I googled GOW but can't find it. I would like to make HA serum.
Thanks

Thank you Cadia
I went to the GOW and checked this out. Since I've never made any serums or creams I find it hard... The Germaben II comes in 4 oz. so I would I measure 75 ml is still a challenge for me.

Bellezza: 0.75mL not 75mL! Wink 0.75mL is a *tiny* amount of preservative. Basically Germaben is effective at 0.3-1.0% concentration, and personally I don't like to use that much preservative if I can get away with it... so I tend to go for a 0.5% amount of preservative as a compromise.

The easiest thing is to get a hold of those small plastic squeeze bulb pipettes with gradations on them (usually they'll have markings for 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0mL which is very convenient - they're disposable too so I use it once and throw it out - it's not as bad as you think since I make a LOT of HA serum at once I only use about 2 pipettes a year)

Thanks so much for your help. I have been wanting to make this for ages, as I thought there couldn't be anything too complicated about it, and you've proved me right! I can't wait to try it out,
Thanks again

You're welcome and good luck! I dabbled in diy for a while now, and mostly gave up on more complicated things but HA serum is probably the only thing I make from scratch these days because it's so easy and you save a lot of money doing so.

Another thing: if you find the HA serum too thick for your liking, just add more water to thin it out. Don't forget to adjust the amount of preservative for the new volume though!

I have never done any diy before, so I thought I would just start with HA serum and perhaps DMAE. It is so much cheaper to make these two than to buy. I dont know if I will ever progress to anything more complicated. I know the folks on skininteractives make All kinds of lotions and potions that they swear by, so maybe one day....

For DMAE bitartrate (did I spell that right? lol anyway it's the DMAE salt) yes, you can make an at-home serum (though personally I found it made my face feel itchy so I ditched it)... but for the more effective amine DMAE serums (such as those sold by PSF and GoW), you can't diy them. =\ (no big deal for me, I found out my skin hates DMAE anyway)

Looking at those squeezable pipettes, 0.75ml equals roughly 20 drops and is not a tiny amount.
My DIY receipe was
0.5 gr HA
100 ml Distilled Water
2-3 drops of LiquaPar Optima (preservative)

Maybe i been doing it all wrong.

0.75mL isn't a tiny amount, but I was using Germaben II, you've been using Liquapar Optima, which I assume works w/different concentrations?

In any case, with preservatives, you should always use the recommended amount to make sure it is effective.

Thanks maiea

Where will I look up the recommend amount for each preservative?
How will I tell if my HA serum went rancid?

Hmm - the place you buy the preservative from should tell you the effective concentration... so maybe ask the place you bought yours from?

You can't really tell if its gone off unless there is an obvious colour change or filamentous floating things in the serum (happened to me before which is why I'm careful about preservative concentrations now!)

I was thinking about using DMAE bitrate if I made a DMAE serum. I have a recipe, so maybe I will try it and see if it agrees with my skin, Maiea, why do you think it made your skin itch , was it just a DMAE seum or was there something else added? Just curious!

Ricky - nah, my skin just hates DMAE in all forms bitrate or amine. I found through diy that there's a bunch of stuff my skin hates (and annoying too since I spent quite a bit of money on some of them and they're just sitting in my closet)

Maiea,
I know what you mean about stuff just sitting in the closet! At least you have the excuse that things don't agree with your skin. I can't say that I'm afraid, I just get tired of things or see some new "rave" I simply have to try.

Ricky - Yeah, I buy stuff that people are raving about (expensive stuff!! haha) and find out that my skin hates it. That's how I'm stuck with about 7oz of oat beta glucans and a bottle of amine DMAE. *sigh* Funny enough after all the diy the stuff my skin likes is pretty inexpensive. Copper peptides (not really diy), aloe and sea kelp bioferment. It's funny I never thought of aloe before but I recently bought a couple of bottles of it from GOW (garden of wisdom - it's REALLY cheap and 99% pure aloe!), and my skin is loving it.. I wake up with plump glowy skin. Imagine that!

Hello,
This is my first time to post and I would like to know if someone can put the HA serum into ounces etc. Can you use another preservative as long as you have the amount recommended? I have been reading and buying and I hope I am ready to start making and using. Kind of scary at first.
Thanks everyone for making it so interesting.

as long as the preservative is suitable for aqueous solutions, I don't see a problem... someone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmm, I don't really know the imperial system, but do know that 30mL is approx. 1oz, but it's not exactly that... for the purposes of HA serum it should be okay to be a little bit off.
