I've always been told that I should do a weekly deep cleansing at home, which consists of 3 main steps:
- washing
- exfoliating
- mask
What kind of exfoliant should I use? I often use those with a grainy texture. Is that too harsh for skin (especially I plan to start soon using BHA products at night)?
I've seen those exfoliants with oil base. How does that exfoliate??
Please advice, thanks a lot! |

I have combination skin with a VERY oily forehead. I use Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel twice a week, my face is able to tolerate the regular version but they also offer a sensitive if needed.
They offer trail size versions too.

I use EpidermxII and it works very well, otherwise you can just buy some loose microdermabrasion crystals and mix a little with water. |

Manual exfoliation is good for the surface of the skin, whereas chemical exfoliation (BHAs/AHAs) go beneath the surface of skin to microscopically exfoliate. So your two steps of surface scrubbing and masking are redundant steps Nicolette. One chemical exfoliation is sufficient. (Again this is all a matter of personal choice) Some women just like to use several skin care steps.
There aren't that many well formulated exfoliants at least not enough to make a difference to skin. They should have a PH level of between 3 and 4 to make any difference. Some that come to mind are Estee Lauder's Fruition, Paula's Choice BHAs or AHA, Exuviance Vespera Bionic, Neostrata Bionic Face Serum which are good for normal to oily or combination skins. |

I use gentle exfoliants nearly everyday and credit that toward upgrading my skin from acne prone to oily/combo. EpidermxII [worked up to daily use, gearing up for twice a day] and home based aha/bha solution. |

Has anyone had an adverse reaction from pumpkin peels?
I have been using it twice a week for about two months, and am suddenly experiencing a horrible breakout |

I'm oily and extremely acne prone, but am very sensitive so my skin can only take Zia Ultimate Exfoliant which is very mild, but I do it about 3 times a week |

Hi mariah, I have heard of adverse reactions in the form of burning/irritation from leaving it on too long. If it's been 2 months of use before the breakout, it's quite possible some other factor like diet, stress, hormones or other products may be the cause of this. sudden breakouts are sooo difficult to diagnose the cause and effect sometimes,
good luck

I am hormonal acne prone or used to be until I discovered SKII - great exfoliants that are gentle (and I react to everything!):
- Decleor Phytopeel twice per week - my staple
- SKII Facial Treatment Essence - once per day or as needed - my 2nd repeat buy
- Dermalogica microfoliant - my third staple
- PSF Pumpkin Peel (good but a bit deadly/strong: max 5 mins)Can live without it.
You can rotate. If I had to choose one for value, travel friendly and effective as hell it would be Decleor

Well, I've seen suggestions on this forum for every kind of product & treatment but yours tops them all....ancient voodoo (your ID) I've merely performed my own surgery on my sebaceous bumps but have never tried ancient voodoo. Care to share them with me? I'm sure I could learn a lot from you

athena123 and black lace.... thank you for your input!
I do think this was probably due to a reaction to food.
Though usually very health conscious, I did eat too many chocolate kisses and almonds around Halloween
I am taking the very terrifying 'plunge' into a chemical peel this afternoon!
I hope it will hep with acne, spots they leave on my olive skin after they go ... and tiny wrinkles that are beginning on my face... |

And Mariah - don't know strength/type of your peel, but I felt the same way before my 1st 40% lactic peel, and it was a breeze. Had nothing to fear...
Good luck |

Thanks for the encouragement!
I am having a Vitalize Peel®
In case anyone is interested...here is the information.
I had an acid fruit peel in June, and it was a piece of cake... she called it a 'facial'. My face looked awesome. She followed it with a microdermabrasion. There was no irritation, peeling etc. Nor was none expected.
With this, I am expected to peel for 4 to 7 days (or 3 to 5, depending on how my skin reacts).
From SkinMedica's website:
REVEAL HEALTHIER SKIN
Vitalize Peel helps fight the effects of time, sun damage, and environmental assaults. This powerful yet non-damaging peel can take years off aging skin.
BENEFITS:
Very superficial peel requires little to no downtime for the patient
The only superficial peel suitable for all skin types I-VI
Self-neutralizing formula is easy to use
Special formulation includes a unique blend of peeling agents: alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids, resorcinol, and retinoic acid (obtained by physician)
Results are predictable and noticeable after just one peel
Condition: Photoaging
Treatment: In a clinical study of 10 patients, each underwent a series of three
Vitalize Peels at three, six, and nine weeks.
In pre- and post-treatment biopsies, an average 50 percent increase in Grenz-zone
collagen and an average 22 percent increase in epidermal thickening was noted.
Visibly improves the appearance of scarring and hyperpigmentation resulting from inflammatory acne.
WORKS ON ACNE-AFFECTED SKIN
Condition: Fine lines, inflammatory acne, hyperpigmentation
History: Minocycline hydrochloride, Ortho Tri-Cyclen®, azelaic acid cream, 4%
hydroquinone
Treatment: Six Vitalize Peels at three-week intervals, Ortho Tri-Cyclen®, azelaic acid cream, benzoyl peroxide, sodium sulfacetamide lotion
FOR ACNE-RELATED HYPERPIGMENTATION |

I love to exfoliate.
I switch between EpidermxII and a microfibre towel morning and evening.
And use Mario Badescu's Glycolic Gel at night and Skin Biology's Exfol Serum in the day.
None of that causes me to peel but I can see my dark marks coming up. Once I get rid of all the old acne marks I will lessen up on the exfoliation. |

Mariah:
Wow, have had exactly the same peel!!Am scheduled for 2nd one on Dec. 3rd. How amazing is that
I xfoliate a lot normally & did a 40% lactic acid peel about 4 days before my Vitalize peel so my face was very clean before the treatment. The technician did a microdermabrasion first, than the peel. After the peel, I experienced no burning, even skin redness was minimal to nil. Think it puzzled the technician somewhat but I suspect not many of her clients have my v. tolerant skin. And after 3 days of skin not peeling I was beginning to wonder if it had any effect at all.
But 4th day, skin started to peel and continued for about 5 days. Made a very nice difference in my pigmentation problems so expect the next one will improve things even more. Will do another 40% lactic peel today.
I was advised to use a Vit cream afterwards but am going to take my own Hydra B5 gel, an HA formula for use after the peel. Then I'll apply the cream. Think that will be more moisturizing. And sunscreen. Very important afterwards.
You'll be fine...Have fun |

Thanks again arya2
Now I feel SO MUCH better!
I read in the contract (after I paid and made the appt.) that I should not use Retin-A... which I do not use regularly, but have used the past 5 days due to the breakout... but then on the www-- I saw many citings that Retin-A is a good prep for chemical peels.
Of course as I previously mentioned, I also use the PSF pumpkin peel 2x weekly.
What is the 40% peel you mention? Do you do it yourself?
I will let you know how mine goes!
I have another schedule for mid December.
Thanks again! |

Yes, I do the 40% lactic acid peel myself. My pores clog soooo easily so tho' I use the microfibre cloth, do AHA/BHA masks 2x wk, do daily xfoliation, still wasn't enuf to keep skin at best. Decided on Larachems 40% lactic peel for several reasons: Lactic acid is a gentler but effective AHA & felt I should start my first peels with it, the pH level is low, didn't want a complicated formula, & as a Cdn, wanted to eliminate any shipping/customs hassles (you never know when the border guys decide to go crazy). Even tho' Larachem quotes in US$, it's located in Toronto.
Don't know if you mentioned your skin type, but unless you're confident it is quite resilient, I'd not use Retin products for about 4-5 days before your first peel. You want to see first how your skin reacts to the peel. I know about the info that says it's a good prep, but personally, I'd err on the side of caution for the 1st peel til you get a feel for things.
I'm now using MaMa lotion every 2nd day while continuing my 40% wkly peels & masks. My skin can handle it. In fact, I think I'll graduate to a higher % lactic formula. This on top of VitC & CPs 4xwk. Skin has adapted to all this & loves/needs lots of exfoliation.
Do keep me posted. |

once a week, I do the pytopeel (decleor's) followed by a mask (could be the clay & herb or aroma purete or moisturising). Last couple of times, after the phytopeel, I have massaged my face and neck with either the neroli or ylang ylang oil. Then cleansed it with damp cotton and then applied the aroma purete mask. The skin looked as good as having had a decleor facial from the therapist!
Midweek I might apply the peel-off mask from decleor. Then that night, i apply the old vitaroma mask mixed with prolagene.
Before doing either of the things above, i cleanse my face with a face wash. Pat dry my face and then apply the things.
