Do you think facials help keep the skin young-looking? What role do you think they play?

I think so, especially when the facialist uses a good massage technique for the face. Massage is quite a rejuvinating tool, when you get the right massage.

There are many different facials out there but ultimately they benefit the skin by keeping it properly cleansed. The steam treatment involved paired with exfoliation aid in purging blackheads to the surface which your esthetician will then extract. Massage increases circulation and the mask further deep cleanses. This is what I do for a living so I've seen impressive results of regular facials over the years.

I worked in a salon and yes facials are lovely. In saying that, I now can get the same anti-aging results from my routine. In fact, the last facial I had they used the Clarisonic (which I have). Personally I would prefer to invest in the right skin care routine (including masks and peels) and spend the money on an occasional full body massage. My last facial was a Christmas gift certificate from DH. It cost 125.00. Five years ago I might have noticed a dramatic difference in my skin after the facial. Since I have learned so much and taking somewhat professional care of my skin the only thing I noticed was the way I felt....pampered and relaxed. Next time full body. Cool

Facials help circulation, eliminate toxins, firm the skin, relax the skin, promote oxygen and can promote cell renewal when exfoliating/steaming with the treatment.

Its best to have at least 1 a month.

I agree with Winnie. A good facial will make you feel pampered and relaxed, and that will be reflected in your complexion.

But, I personally think if you want great-looking skin, it's more effective to invest in the right skincare products for your skin, especially SUNSCREEN, and to give them time to work. Last but not least, it's more effective to invest in the right FOODS for your skin. Avoiding processed foods and having a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables really works over time.

All this said, I look at facials as an occasional splurge when I want to look extra glowy (for an event, dinner, etc.). If I go, it's really a splurge and I am REALLY picky about whom I allow to touch my face. I had one bad facialist experience, so I only go to the same select salons in NYC and LA (where I spend my time) and always ask for the same estheticians.

Actually, what I love more are body massages. Oh heavens, now THEY make a difference!

Can anyone recommend an effective facial product for at home use for over 55? I have salon facials but would like to supplement them at home.

Facial can enhance the circulation of your face, so it does keep you look young, at least can delay your aging

Great question! I have a facial every four months and have always wondered the same. I believe a facial complements a good skin care routine. Although a facial is relaxing, I also take advantage of the time to consult with my beautician about whether or not my skin is doing well, I'm using the right products for my skin type, and I need to tweak my routine.

Vanna,

I agree with you about using facials to get professional feedback about your skin regime.

I have only had two professional facials.

One in January 2007, where the feedback I got was that I was being too vigorous chemically with my skin (with glycolic peels, etc.) and further dehydrating it. The aesthetician recommended that my focus primarily be to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

In February 2008, I saw the same aesthetician. This time around, she hardly had to do any extractions and my skin is much more hydrated. She remembered me and had notes as well. She exclaimed that my skin was a lot better, especially my nose pores. I told her that I had added the Clarisonic to my regime and had followed her instructions to hydrate.

Regarding facials increasing circulation. You can do that on your own with facial massage, facial exercises, and devices like the Clarisonic. IMO, a better investment of $$ and more consistent than sporadic facials.

Facials definitely are a key in keeping skin looking young. First of all, you are taking care of your skin which will already give you a more refreshed look. Plus, exfoliation is key in anti aging and you usually do deep exfoliation at a facial! Also, giving yourself an hour of relaxation can take ten years off!

I think that facials are a good pick-me-up for your skin. But, more importantly, keep you up to date and thinking about your skin. Nothing compares to drinking lots of water, wearing plenty of sunscreen, not smoking, and a consistent and good daily skincare regime for maintaining good complexion and young-looking/feeling skin.
