| When is it considered Adult Acne and not hormonal and what the heck to do? 45 years old and it was usually jaw line/chin and now it creeping into my cheeks and it leaves a bit of a scar or red mark with large pore once it does go away. Kind of want to go to derm but not quite sure that's the way to go. Have been using Jan Marini at night for the aha/bha I thought to have helped keep pores from clogging, but just not sure where to go from here...kind of a non stop battle. |

| It could be hormonal or some sort of acne. I think that is sounds like you have cysts which are usually caused by a hormonal imbalance. I would recommend going to a cosmetician and getting a facial. She will be able to tell you what is causing the acne and what products will be effective in preventing further damage. |

| Kittyd go see a derm asap. You might need to go on antibiotics and use different products on your skin. I've always had amazing skin - maybe 1 small bump a month. Then, after my 3rd child but especially when I turned 39, literally overnight I developed acne. It's in my T-zone, especially on my chin. |

Kitty, I lived your battle for about 3 years starting at about 36...it's hell, I know. I had very deep acne around my mouth and chin, even though I never really had significant breakouts as a teen. I tried antiobiotics, facials, ongoing dermatologist visits, etc., but nothing really worked until I went on Proactiv. (and I considered buying an infomercial product a last-ditch effort due to my desperation!)
I did the whole 3 part system for 6 months (at most), and now I just use the toner every day, and the repairing lotion as needed (which is VERY rarely), or the week before my period if I happen to remember it. I very seldom get an deep breakouts anymore, and if I do, they are VERY tiny. BTW, I also used Retin A once a week during those 3 years of hell, but was still breaking out until I added the ProActiv.
I also really like their Sulfur Mask, but don't use it that often...it is great for cleaning out pores, and also to spot treat on breakouts when you go to bed at night.
Is it the gentlest system out there for your skin? Probably not. But is it clinically proven to work? Yes, and their sales volume and % of repeat customers speaks to that.
The dermatologists who created (and sold) ProActiv now have a another line called Rodan and Fields that is owned by Estee Lauder...I haven't switched to that because I think it is bascially the same stuff, but just targeting a different demographic of aging women instead of teens. (which means it just more expensive!)
Regardless of what you go with, I wish you the best in resolving this...I know it can be hard to deal with.

Thank you ladies for your posts - you just never know what you try is going to make it better or worse. You know I bought the Proactive for my son a few years back and that might very well be the answer. I do have dry skin too on top of the acne..so, acne or dry skin.... m..dry skin. |

When I read your post, I was thinking maybe you should see a doctor. It's not right that your skin is acting like that. I have problems too, but I went to the doctor to at least get a better understanding.
I feel that some members on EDS will give you some good advice also. |

If ProActive doesn't work, I would definitely see the dermatologist.
But the number one thing they will say is "Female Adult Acne" due to your age and hormone changes, and then put you on antiobiotics (not good), possibly Retin A (which certainly isn't bad), and then try to sell you their line of skin care. I would opt for ProActive first. |

I think you should check one thing first, do you have a regular life style?
If so, then it is probably some hormonal acne.
I will suggest you to go to see a doctor. He/she will probably give a hormone drug which is OK for women (not ok for men), this drug can control your oil secretion therefore reduce your acne.
Definitly see a doctor, as you are 45, your skin probably can not stand some harsh treatment (glycolic acid et al) as those teenagers' do. |

I started getting weird breakouts (not full blown acne) but red bumps and whiteheads when I turned 37. After 8 months of trying different things, I finally went to the derm. It turned out I have acne rosacea. I don't have the typical flushing etc but just breakouts.
Definitely go to the derm if your skin doesn't improve. Good luck  |

I can totally relate, I never had any acne as a teenager or even in college. Then when I turned 26 I suddenly started breaking out on my chin and cheeks. It was so horrifying because I was not used to the breakouts and how to deal with it. Most people my age were over the acne phase in their lives and can't relate. So I tried proactive too...that didn't really help. I used products with salcylic acid, like scrubs and washes, and benzoyl peroxide (which is what Proactive is all about). I finally talked to my dermatologist who prescribed Retin A and Hydroquinone. Then a friend of mine told me about Obagi and that basically encorporates those same 2 items by derm recommended. Since then my skin has really cleared up, I get the occasional zit here and there around my period. I only used it for 7-8 weeks and have not really kept up with the maintenance. But my skin is doing good.
Also, stress, diet, and environmental factors all can effect your skin. So you should really go back and see if anything has changed. |
