I have suncreen, cleanser, toner, mask, microdermabrasion, lotion.... so that's all out. What's 1 thing (doesn't matter what it is or what it's for) that's a definite winner that i should get next? I have to get some more supersmile toothpaste and want to try something new lol. I know put a big L on my forehead. |

Why would one need vitamin C serum? The girl that i get facials done by told me to not bother getting it. Just wondering why most younger people would use it? Sounds fun though, i might definitely try! |

I would definitely vote for a vitamin C serum for its great antioxidant properties and increased protection against sun damage.
Actually, I would have skipped the whitening toothpaste as it thins the tooth enamel. It's better to have a professional tooth bleaching (or use a DIY bleaching kit with trays) once in a while, and use a non-abrasive toothpaste on a daily basis. |

Same here!
I'll be 42 this weekend, and I sure wish I had started Vit C at 25 just for the sun protection feature.
But make sure you get an oil-soluble version. |

I am not sure that Obagi's is oil-soluble.
I like the 302 C's...here is a post from Boski on the 302 versions, plus a new line by 302 called "Calmskin"

Hey Bethany,
I got an answer about the level of C in the C Boost, Lightening and H&D formulas. It seems the Lightening and H&D have identical levels, don't ask me what the difference it. Also, for those who cannot afford some of the higher priced 302 products, the Calmskin website products will have more affordable versions of many of the products in the 302 professional line available online for direct to customer shipment. I will let you all know when the site is up.
Here's Dr. H note:
Hi Kiddo,
The C boost contains 8%, the L Drops and the Decollete product contain 16% (this very high concentration is especially designed for deep pigment problems). The Calmskin will has a Vitamin C Drops product that will have 12.5% and be really all that anyone needs. I think that will be your best value. That site should be open soon (does that sound familiar?). We have had just overwhelming response to these products and when combined (alternated) with 302 Serum, Plus Serum or Drops the results are pretty startling. I generally like to go 3 days and 3 days, alternating days, per week, once per day. |

Nimue had some other brand recommendations for oil-soluble Vit C on this thread, plus you will also see some research in here on why oil-soluble is the way to go (provided that you go the Vit C route!)

I have been using different types of vitamin C serums during the last four years, and my definite favorite is SkinMedica C Complex. It's a very stable, creamy gel with 15 % l-ascorbic acid in a silicone base. It gives skin a very nice glow. You can buy samples from Ebay.
I am sure the oil-soluble versions are good, too, but I haven't tried any of those yet. |

I would really question the skills/education of the girl who does your facial. Vit C is an excellent preventative and also provides some protection from the sun (but does not replace sunscreen).
I like skinceutiuals and Cellex-c. I keep them in the fridge and the last forever without oxidizing. But if your skin does ok with silicone then I would recommend SkinMedica. |

Ya, it's strange..3 people told me not to bother lol. I don't know why. But i won't know unless i try it myself! So i'm definitely going to! I appreciate the input....anything that can make my skin look amazing i'm all for it. |

What about the Clarisonic skin brush?www.clarisonic.com It's an expensive initial investment that's worth it. Many posters here consider it one of the best things they have added to their skin care. |

Good for you! A very worthwhile investment.
Then I agree with others about trying a vitamin C serum. See if you can get some samples of a few different ones and see what works well for you. What kind of skin do you have (skin type, concerns, etc.)
You can get samples from a couple places (including EDS if you are placing an order for something else), including Ebay and:
Diana Yvonne samples

I like the facial brush. it is wonderful. you'll love it when you use it at the first time. Cleaning is the primer step of skincare, it will help the serum and cream absorbed. |

Samples are OK but it's sort of hard to tell after using something only 1-2 times. You need to allow at least a month in order to see full results so it can be sort of hard. I will just take a chance and do a lot of research before buying.
My skin type is combination/oily. |

Just an FYI, the Diana Yvonne sample sizes are pretty generous so they will last a while. But none of the DY ones are oil-based. BTW, I have a sample of the Triple C and it is very stable - it is $38 for an ounce:
www.dianayvonne.com/c=2ZgVpQMchTFeDaYAKqJurUeRl/category/179availablesamples
Quote: |
Vitamin C+ has a pronounced toning and firming effect on the skin, making it suitable as an ingredient in cosmetics intended for use in the vicinity of the eyes (reduction of puffiness, etc.) as well as skin care products for aging and mature skin.
Due to its melanin reducing properties, Vitamin C+ can improve the appearance of freckled complexions, age spots and discoloured skin areas. |
Triple Vitamin C - 5 ML sample $7
Combines the beneficial actions of the 3 forms of Vitamin C noted for skin care at 7 pH.
- combination of C esters remains stable for long periods and won't irritate the skin Studies indicate:
- Effective in reducing skin hyperpigmentation through suppression melanin formation. A significant lightening effect was seen clinically in 19 of 34 patients with melasma and solar lentigos.
- Equivalent to ascorbic acid in stimulating collagen synthesis.
- Superior protective effect against skin damage induced by UV-B irradiation. It has long been suggested that Ester C's must be absorbed and converted to ascorbic acid in the skin to be effective. However, recent studies suggest that the sodium ascorbyl phosphates superior effect over ascorbic acid in protecting the skin may be due to it's direct free radical scavenging effect rather than conversion to ascorbic acid. Journal of Health Science 2005
- Produces glowing, radiant skin
Ingredients: Distilled Water, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Magnesium Boro Ascorbate, Hyaluronic Acid, Xantham Gum, Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben.
Vitamin C 10% - 5 ML sample $7
Ingredients: Propylene Glycol, L-Ascorbic Acid
Vitamin C 12% - 5 ML sample $6
A stable 12% solution of Vitamin C Serum at 2.3 pH. Although the shelf life is up to 1 year it is recommended that this product be used within 6 months to ensure full potency.
Ingredients: Propylene Glycol, L-Ascorbic Acid
Vitamin C 25% - 5 ML sample $7
This is the strongest of the Vitamin C and quite acidic. The 25% Vitamin C has a shelf life of 6 months. However, the manufacturer recommends to use within 3 months to ensure optimum potency.
Ingredients: Distilled water, L-Ascorbic Acid, Hyaluronic Aid
Also check on Ebay for "generic" Vit. C serums of various percentages, bases, and combinations as you probably can get what you want cheaper that way if you're interested versus going for a "brand" name. |
