Does anyone have an absolute fantastic hair dye that they use- drugstore brands please.
I had been using Nice and Easy and it doesn't seem to look that nice anymore. It keeps dying my hair unevenly- a problem that I had not been having before. Usually I just like to do the roots and then for the last 10 mins do the rest of my hair, and it has always worked. But for the last two times it keeps making my roots very light and the rest of my hair dark. I am using medium golden brown and that is the color of my natural hair as well. I tried Loreal Natural match in medium golden brown- it seemed to work a bit better, but I can still see a difference between my roots and the rest.
Does anyone have any suggestions? |

I don't think it's the dye, it's the method. My hair stylist told me that when you're doing your hair at home, you should only color the first four inches of your roots. You don't need to re-color the length with all over color because it's already colored. If you deposit more color, it's going to be darker. She said to just refresh the color, put the dye in a spray bottle and spray the color on, and leave it for only five minutes.
Now, I have to say I havne't done this, but I have done to my hair what you're describing with Clairol Natural Instincts (which I would recommend-- very easy on your hair). And it does make sense to not color the bottom portion of your hair. She also said not choose a color as dark as you think you need. Maybe try a light golden brown instead of a medium. HTH. |

| I've used Revlon color silk.Very cheap and seems to stay longer. I'm coloring gray roots, and going a shade darker seems to blend better for me. Also try the hair board on MUA for more information they may offer a better solution. |

I had noticed this problem as well and figured my roots ( which are mostly gray) will appear lighter than the lengths which are darker and more colour just seems to make them even darker than that!
Natural Instincts is nice, I've started using that and it only takes ten minutes which I love. |

I've tried the 4 inches of roots only method as well- and it still looked the same.
I've heard that Loreal excellence and preference brands are supposed to be the best- has anyone tried those? |

Preference is better than Excellence. These are permanent, though, and demi-permanent, like Natural Instincts, is healthier for your hair. BUT. The bottom hair shaft is not going to get any lighter. Maybe you should go see a colorist and tell them the problems you're having. To even mine out, we actually had to chop some of the darkest ends off, then highlight to blend in new growth, as I'm going to start growing out my natural color which is actually a few shades lighter than what I was coloring it (medium Golden brown).
But, like I said, any product you use is going to give you the same results. The bottom half of your hair is going to stay darker than the top, unless you use a lift product. Which means bleach. Lots of it. It won't even really change if you use a lighter haircolor because lighter hair color can't break through already dyed, dark hair color. It's like, you drew a black line with a crayon, but then you decided you wanted the line to be white, and you just drew over the black line with a white crayon. Nothing's gonna happen, except maybe some ugly gray color. Well, that metaphor's kind of muddled.
You should at least stop coloring the bottom portion of your hair when you do your roots. Then the the dark will eventually grow out as you get it cut. Actually, I think there's a new Nice n' Easy product out called Perfect 10 which is supposed to lighten without bleach. It might be worth a shot. |

I think I will try one more shot at just dying the roots, and if not- like you suggested, I think I will have to get some professional help.
I will give my hair a rest though and wait 2 weeks. I will let you all know how it turns out!

I dye my hair with Excellence - I find it is the best for dying my very persistent grey hairs.
Preference seems to have a better selection of colours - but for me colouring the greys is my main concern.
Also, in selecting colours - the excellence colours always seem to turn out darker than the colours presented on the box.
Hate those grey hairs!!!! |

I just colored with Garnier Nutrisse which is a permanent dye. I do try to just do the roots but I'm applicator-challenged  and the dye inevitably ends up on the rest of the hair too. That's ok for me because I find the color generally gets washed out over time so I'm starting off with lighter tones anyway. |

Thanks so much for the tip on Excellence, I do have quite a bit of grey hair too, and it would be good to use a brand that covers up those peskies! |

when i was younger, i dyed my hair darker with clairol herbal essences dye (semi). it made my hair nice and shiny and the colour faded out gradually and evenly. if you're going darker, this is a good choice, in my opinion.
i'd also like to echo a post-er here, who mentioned that you should only dye the un-coloured portion of your hair. this is true especially if you are lightening! too much bleach will just kill your hair.
clairol has their new product out, "perfect 10". its supposed to be ammonia-free, with more gentle colourants. worth a try there. |

| Loreal Feria is great. It has different tones, so it looks like they are natural highlights. The colors are great, nothing matte or dull. |

| I am asian and I use Revlon Colorsilk #43 Medium golden brown. I use it to cover grey.The longer you leave it on the darker it gets. It looks Very natural.Sometimes it is on sale at Target 2 boxes for $3! |

Thanks Lucyluc! I haven't seen that brand in canada, but i have seen it across the border at target.
I always wondered about it, becuase it looks like it has great shades, but I thought its so cheap that it might not be that great.
Yesterday I picked up Loreal Natural Match in dark golden brown, I am just about to try it, but I will only be touching the roots.
I will update and let you all know how it goes- wish me luck! |

At some point your hair got over-processes. If you are willing have your hair trimmed to do away with the ends which are soaking up color. I get my products from Sally's Beauty Supply. So far, so good. I do my roots once a month. After 30 minutes I wet my hair, add shampoo to get a nice lather. After leaving the shampoo/color on for about 2 minutes I rinse. All my hair needs is the 2 minute shampoo with color to refresh the previous color. My hair color is light/medium brown with some red highlights. Right now I am covering gray. |

I do my roots every 6 days! I do not dye the rest of my hair, just the roots,then once a month I may dye my whole head of hair.My hair grows SO fast I can see the grey after 3 days!  |

I have had grey hair from the age of 16. Because my hair is black - the grey hair shows up after 3-4 days so i have to touch up every 7 days........i have used alot of brands like l'oreal excellence etc....but now i am using Superdrugs own brand permanent colour........
I am at the end of my teather when it comes to touching up my roots......

| the reason I HAVE to touch up so frequently is that the grey is right by the temples...the most visible part of the face.I know its not good to dye your hair so I just use a small amount to touch the visible parts and then do a more thourough job maybe once a month or every 6 weeks.I sure hate grey hair it is very aging. |

Thanks for the tip Winnie, but, my hair, is actually very healthy and not overprocessed at all (thank god!). The color on my ends is actually the color I am trying to get onto my roots, my roots just for some reason have not been "grabbing" the color the way they used to. My hair is naturally a tad lighter and redder than medium golden brown and for the last 10 yrs my trick of dying the roots first and then pulling the color through for the last few mins has always worked. But for some reason now, my hair just isn't grabbing the color anymore. Can you tell me more about your shampoo/color method? I would love to try that out since i have to touch up my roots so often.
Lucyluc and Karina, I feel your pain! I have so many "white" not even grey hair now and I am only 31, I have had them since about 19. It is so frustrating to have to touch up my roots so often. I see the growth coming back after a few days as well! I've been using nice and easy root touch up for the temples every 1.5 weeks and then a regular full dye of the roots every 2.5 to 3 weeks. With the root touch up, you only have to leave it on for 10 mins.
Thank you all for your suggestions, I finally found a brand and color that worked! I used Loreal Natural Match in dark golden brown, and it worked great! My roots now match the rest of my head!
But Winnie, please let me know about your method- although now I am a bit scared to try anything else since I got my color perfect again! |

| I color my hair ever two weeks. I recently tried that new Clairol (I think) 10 minute hair dye. Not good at all. Didn't cover the grey very well. I use loreal. I can never get my temples to cover the grey well. Any trick to that? My hair starts to grow out in one week. I do my hair ever other. What a pain. That is what you do to keep that nasty grey from poking through. I am almost all grey. YUCK. Any tips would be great here. |

Just sharing what I learned on one of the threads here. There's a product called Gray Magic that you add to your color solution; it is supposed to help those resistant grays grab more color. I also read that folks liked Wella Color Charms; the color is sold separate from the peroxide solution. The peroxide solution comes in different percentages, 30% being the highest and most absorbing for resistant grays. I also understand these products can be purchased from Sally Beauty Store and must be mixed in the appropriate measurements as directed.
Having said all of this, I've not yet had the opportunity to try it but intend to very soon, just have to get to the nearest Sally store which is a ways away. I'm sure if you do a search on this you can learn more of the details but this is just from what I remember.
I, too, am having the same problem of resistant grays not coloring very well. Also, once a salesgirl discouraged me from coloring frequently (every 2 weeks) and suggested I use those temporary touch up wands. I've not tried it yet but have used mascara to touch up at the temples; it's a little messy and not a perfect color match (my color is light golden brown) but works okay. |
