I'm trying to decide if I should have a chemical peel to get rid of pigmentation - melasma and other sun spots - as well as small keratoses. A derm in Chicago told me a chemical peel would take care of things with about 10 days down time. I'm afraid of rebound hyperpigmentation (fair skin) which I've read about in various forums.
Anyone with recent chem peel experience, I'd love to hear from you!
P.S. I tried IPL a few years ago and it did mostly nothing. |

I am considering Vi Peel which is a fairly new peel that is out. A few friends have had it and love it. It is maintenance though and recommended at least every six months to keep up. You can go to the website and get more information. |

Once a year, usually in the fall, I have a jessner peel. It is usually about one week of down time, so I take the week off work. It really, really helps with the hyperpigmentation and skin texture, but does make you more susceptible to the sun, so you have to be very care and diligent with sunscreen. One of these days, I'd love to try the blue Obagi peel. I'm planning on another Jessner peel this October. |

platinumrose - Ooooh, haven't heard of the Vi Peel...I will start reading up on it. Thanks!
msaries - Is the Jessner peel fairly deep? I'm asking because you mention you get one every year. I assumed a derm-delivered chemical peel would last longer than a year. I use sunscreen every day already, but, honestly sometimes I feel like it's not working (still looking for the perfect one). I do believe many of my spots are hormonal, though, which is another reason I'm wondering how long I'd have clearer skin post-peel or if I'd just make matters worse. |

I have had a tca peel twice in my life. they are very effective and the peeling is intense. The only thing to watch out for is that the doctor makes sure to peel up to the hairline. mine didnt and i have a light area near the hairline. other than that they are very good but only do in winter ok. |

Vass - Do you have fair skin? I do, but I've read that TCA peels can cause rebound hyperpigmentation, so I'm a little leery.
Platinum - Did you do the ViPeel for wrinkles or brown spots? Please keep us up to date on your results. Thanks. |

Platinumrose reporting in with results. First two days sunburn, days 3-5 peeling. But it was a sloughing off peel so it wasn't bad a all that I felt embarrassed at work.
I have never had a chemical peel but this one I have to say is a "rave" in LA with Derm doctors charging $300-$500. It is very easy to do as well. I did it for more of an even tone in my skin. My face does look like a babies bottom.
The seller I purchased it from two weeks ago on ebay is having a sale right now because the peel price is going up and she wants to stock up. I bought it for about $160 and she has it for $129 for anyone interested. |

Yes Bethany it did get rid of the hyperpigmentation. Not the moles obviously but the sun/age spots are gone. My pores appear tighter as well and the wrinkles I never cared about on my forehead because I wear bangs softened. |

Supposedly they are:
"TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid), Salicylic Acid, Phenol, Retinoic Acid, Vitamins and Microelements" |

Platinumrose, can you tell me how bad your hyperpigmentation was, or do you have any photos to show the hyperpigmentation? I am just curious how dark your area/areas were that this peel took care of. Thanks in advance. |

Hi Rileygirl- My hyperpigmentation was not severe at all. I am also pretty fair skinned and am Fitzpatrick skin type II. Also if you have read the Leslie Baumann book, "Skin Type Solution" I am an ORNT- but am borderline on the Non-pigmented side.
The ingredients are TCA, Retin A, Salicylic Acid, Phenol, and Vitamin C.
I just know several respected Dermatologist's offices are using this peel now in LA. It has been tauted on several news stations in LA, was on the TV show Extra and In Style magazine.
Here is Dr. Kalil's website to view the peel form more informaiton.

Bethany - Thanks for posting the ingredients for the ViPeel. I, too, am Fitzpatrick I and borderline DSPW. I've read the chemical peel forum at makemeheal and am afraid to try - at home - the big-gun peels mentioned there. I worked up from 30% glycolic peels to a 55% lactic peel from MUAC and got 2 small burn spots on different areas of my face because my skin is more sensitive in some areas...but I don't know what specific areas until a burn happens. Because the ViPeel's first ingredient is TCA, I'm a little afraid of the DIY method. I purchased the TCA peel from MUAC but haven't tried it yet because of my reluctance. I'm on a never-ending quest to get rid of my brown spots. A Chicago derm advised a full-blown chem peel but I've read about rebound hyperpigmentation and he won't give a refund! |

Lou & Platinum - Thanks for all the feedback on your at-home peel experiences...it does help people who have skin like I do make more informed decisions about products, etc. |

I am equally as cautious...especially since I somehow seem to have ended up with MORE pigmentation after 4 Fraxel treatments.
I was *really* tempted to try this after watching the video on the link Plat posted above, but after reading about your burn spots I am going to stick to my 302 products, dermarolling, and Retin-A 2x a week. Then I'll reassess 6 months from now. ![Confused](images/smiles/confused.gif) |

Bethany - I'm so sorry to hear about the Fraxel results, but yes, I've read that can happen. Several years ago, I had two laser treatments (don't know what kind it was, but it wasn't Fraxel) that did absolutely nothing for the melasma on my cheeks. It did burn off a couple of tiny freckles on one cheekbone but the doctor said I'd need 5-8 treatments and even then he couldn't guarantee the melasma would be gone. He was going to add Levulan to the process but at $600 per treatment, I declined because I had the distinct feeling that he was "practicing." And he had an RN doing the procedure, so I wasn't confident that I was getting a medical-level service. Since then I've known two other women who had lackluster results at the same place after spending $3,000-$4,000 for weeks of treatments. All I'm able to accomplish with my at-home routine is to keep things at a status quo, but I keep researching because new lasers come out regularly. |
