In another forum that I post on someone started a thread about appropriate hairstyles for women over 40. This person thinks that women over a certain age should have shorter hair. I have never heard of any such rule and think it is ridiculous! If you look in the June issue of More Magazine they have all of the finalists from their Model Search (all over 40) and many of them have long hair. Do you all think there is an appropriate hairstyle for women over 40?

No. Women should wear their hair however it looks best on them.

I think the same rules apply if you are 20, 30, 40 or older. It must be flattering, healthy, maintained and a style that fits your lifestyle.

"Older" women can wear long hair.

I just turned 50 and cut my hair off?? Not sure what I was thinking?? Confused
A lot of people tell me I look younger....but I hate it!
Anyway....wouldn't it be great to have one of those total makeovers like on Oprah or the TODAY Show?
I would even be willing to pay for that service!

When I get to 50, in about 18 months, I'll have my hair cut quite short and permed. I hope to at last have the opportunity to wear a great deal of hairspray, and make people think I'm wearing a helmet.

OOOOO catski I'm soooo jealous!!! Nothing says "over 40" like the Helmet Head!!! And don't forget to let those gray roots show!!

Random teasing all over is a great look - that "Moth-eaten" look is fetching for us Mature Girls.

Also I like the look of "Shoe Polish Black" and that matte effect!! Don't you agree ? Wink
Nice. Very nice.

It really depends on how healthy the hair is. I guess I see too many mature women with thin, scraggly, gray hair trying to have it long. Definately requires a good cut and appropriately styled. Please!!!! No Farrah Fawcetts!!

I'm so glad you all agree with me! Especially with all the improvements today in skin care, women can look much younger than they actually are. More magazine is always showing mature women with all different styles and I really appreciate that. I think that as long as you aren't trying to look too young (wearing clothes that are too tight, or something that is trendy but doesn't look good on you) then women should wear whatever they want!

I think the question of length can also depend on the shape and features of the face. Some women simply can't do long hair without looking haggard or tired when they're not, just as not every woman has the face for super short hair either and that's irrespective of age. A good cut should flatter who you are and what you've got.

Beautiful. Me tOO!

Who made That rule anyway? Actually I just turned 50 and I have thick, full long hair - and I hated it whwn I was younger - today I am envied - go figure.
cut it off - No Way - I get complimented on my hair all the time.

I think the cut thing is for when you should've cut it anyway.
Thin, stringy, etc.

While the helmet head can be quite alluring, there are those less formal occasions, sporting events and the like, which may require a more casual look, such as this, equally flattering at any age Laughing

I think it depends on lots of factors - what you do, how you dress, etc. My painting teacher is in her 50s and she looks great with long hair.

Depends on your personal style. When I hit 40 my (formerly straight) hair inexplicably began to curl, and now I have a veritable mane of thick wavy salt & pepper hair (formerly black). Far from being my best asset, it's probably now my only asset, so I flaunt it proudly. Right now it reaches halfway down my back, and I have, at 52 have no intention of cutting it.
