I have recently had surgery on my arm, had a melanoma removed, and as a result now I have a big 10cm scar down my arm. It is not a pretty sight and I know that it's better than the alternative but I would really like to minimise it as much as possible. The surgery was only 3 weeks ago so it's still red and sensitive.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce the scar? I have heard that Bio Oil and pure vitamin E oils are good for it.
What are you experiences with the same?

I think the best thing you can do to improve your surgery scar, is dry brushing and massage. It will increase blood flow, "challenge" your skin and improve the appearance of the scar. I have personally found that brushing and massage are the methods that have helped the most in reducing the appearance of my scars.
If you have a raised, red scar, you can try silicone gel or silicone sheets. I have experienced some improvement from using the scar gel Kelo-Cote. EDS also carries a silicone gel called Dermatix which is pretty similar.
According to the blog futurederm (see below), vitamin E oil has been shown in a study to have no effect on scars. She told in her blog that massage and silicone gel are the methods that are proven most effective in reducing scars.

Good luck! ![Smile](images/smiles/smile.gif) |

Thank you!
I will give the silicone gel a go I think. I don't feel comfortable massaging it at the moment as it is still pretty sore. |

Dry brushing (and exfoliation in general) followed by a vitamin C serum is the way to go in my opinion, but it's too early for that at the moment. Opinions on vitamin E for scars seem to be divided, nevertheless, when I had back surgery my surgeon himself told me to open a capsule of natural vitamin E oil and massage it into the scar. My scar healed very very nicely, I'm not sure if the vitamin E was the reason but it certainly did not do any harm. |
