well, there are very different opinions on the use of silicone in skincare products. almost all mainstream companies (and lots of smaller ones too) use them in skincare products because they have a silky feel. there are those who believe, however, that silicones are ultimately not good for the skin and don't allow it to breathe properly (the equivalent of putting a plastic bag over your skin) - for example, this is a big part of the philosophy behind naturderm, the makers of epidermx. i've been cutting silicones out of my skincare and makeup products, but am still looking for a good silicone free spf. hth!

1) Just one suggestion for sunscreen - I have tried this myself and it is not unpleasant on the skin - Juice Beauty SPF30 sheer moisturiser.

EDS has it here: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/sun-lip-care-m_401_405.htm

Ingredients: active ingredient: titanium dioxide.
ingredients: organic juices of pyrus malus (apple) juice, vitis vinifera (white grape) juice, punica granatum (pomegranate) juice & aloe barbadensis leaf juice, organic cucumis sativus (cucumber) fruit extract, organic camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract, organic cera alba (beeswax), octyl palmitate, caprylic/capric triglyceride, glycerin, cetearyl alcohol, cetearyl glucoside, organic plant oils of helianthus annuus (sunflower), persea gratissima (avocado) & simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), sodium pca, sodium hyaluronate, retinyl palmitate (vitamin A), phospholipids, panthenol (vitamin B5), ascorbyl palmitate (vitamin C), xanthan gum, tetrasodium edta, phenoxyethanol, citrus aurantium (petitgrain), cinnamomum camphora (ho wood) & citrus reticulata (mandarin) pure essential oils.

2) In relation to the use of silicon derivatives in personal care products, dimethicone is one of the most commonly used ones. EWG.org rates this as being of low concern in terms of toxicity.

http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep2/report.php?type=INGREDIENT&id=13751

It would be quite hard to find a shampoo or hair conditioning product without silicone in it.

I know it makes interesting reading (and possibly writing as well on the part of the authors) about all these "toxic" chemicals in our daily use products. Indeed, a few of them are actually toxic, but experiments on the toxicity are usually conducted on lab animals or tissue in very very substantial concentrations.

Many of the suspect chemicals are simply not used in those proportions.

Hope the Juice Beauty product suggestion is helpful to you.

Sark, I have very oily skin prone to hormonal blemishes. My pores can clog if you just LOOK at them in the wrong way! Laughing I also cast my vote for Juice Beauty tinted moisturizer. I've been using this for the last 6 weeks with great results. No breakouts, no chemical ingredients and lots of other good stuff besides. I do, however, find it's very shiny after application, but I tone that down with silk dust!

Good luck, a good sunblock is hard to find!

The base cotaining silicone can provide anti-water and perspiration property.

So if you want find the no-silicone sun cream, the AVENE sunline could be good choice.

Devita, which is my sunscreen of choice, doesn't have silicones. Other (physical)sunscreens without silicones: Keys solar, zenbiotic, mychelle, epicuren... Anyway my favorite is Devita, it's 14% zinc oxide, great for break out prone skin and it's very reasonable priced. (I get the body version)

I never really made an effort to look for sunscreen without silicone, I made an effort to look for physical sunscreen, and it ust turns out that a lot of the good physical sunscreens also happen to be free of silicones.

Silicones actually make me break out and I normally have clear skin. A good sunscreen I like with anti aging properties is Dermalogica Age Smart SPF 30.
