I've been amazed at the info on this site. This is my first post, but I'm sure there will be more because I have a lot to learn. My question concerns the OCM---what is the basic essential oil/oils that would be used and with what would they mixed?

Hi Kathyt

Welcome to the forum! I have only been a member myself for a few months, but have learnt tonnes! I'm not an expert at all but here are my thoughts on OCM. Don't just listen to me, read up on it, get other people's views etc, get a wide picture.

OCM is great for people who want simplicity for their skin. The idea is that oil actually dissolves oil, so any oil you use on your face will dissolve all the oil, grease and grime in your pores without the need for chemicals.

The basic/standard mix for OCM is castor oil and olive oil. I believe castor oil is the actual "cleanser" of the two but it is quite thick so you would use a larger ratio of olive oil (extra virgin and cold pressed). i believe the other oils can be used, such as jojoba, but the castor/olive mix is your kind of base mix.

There are mixed reviews of OCM so it is worth reading up on both and then deciding if it's best for you. Some people swear it's the best they have ever tried and their skin has never been clearer. Other people have said it has caused them to "purge" - come out in horrific acne as a result of all the gunk coming from the pores.

Myself, personally, I had a bad reaction Sad but please don't let that put you off! I believe the theory behind it! I had a number of possible reasons why i reacted (a) i used a sweet almond oil as i did not have any castor/olive and maybe my skin didn't like it (b) i didn't rinse properly (c) i left it on too long. or it may simply be that my skin does not tolerate OCM. Or it may be stress as i've had a bad year. Whatever, i ended up with huge pustules along my jawline! I'm not trying to put you off at all, but i think it's important to know this is a possibility. I only found out that tonnes of people react like this AFTER i turned into some freak!

However, as i do like to balance things - for the two weeks before i broke out, my skin was amazing. It was clear, even, it looked radient and fresh. I MAY give OCM another try (with the proper oils) when my current acne has cleared. i completely agree with theory behind it and would love for it to work for me!

As with all things, not everything suits everbody. I would suggest if you try it, read the following advice

(a) take it slowly - maybe do it once a week, then twice a week etc to see how your skin reacts
(b) mix it into your skin and massage in for a few minutes. Not for hours. you may feel little plugs coming from your pores ..... the oil will feel "bitty". once you can feel this, you're probably done, don't spend ages
(c) remove properly - either wipe off with a warm wet muslin cloth or fannel, or maybe add an emulsifier to it to make it a "wash-off" formula if you'd prefer. but make sure you remove it all
(d) you can add essential oils if you like, entirely your choice. Good ones would be peppermint and lemon (degreasers and help dissolve the muck in the pores) and tea=tree which is anti-bacterial. but, it's very much a personal thing - depending on your skin and what it likes/needs

That's all i can say really! Don't forget, i'm only a novice and can only give my views. Judging on most viewpoints here, i think it can be either the best thing or the worst thing you do for your skin. I sincerely hope it's the best thing for you! Just take it slowly and i'm sure you'll be great!

HTH

Very Happy

I have also found a thread on OCM which you will probably find invaluable. Hope the link works!

If not, it is in the skincare and make-up forum under the"FAQ list associated with EDS FAQ Index (do not remove pls)" heading

I've been using OCM since I first read about it here, like a year ago. I rarely use anything else to clean my face at night, though occasionally if I don't have on makeup, I'll use my Clarisonic with Remergent cleanser.

I experiment with different oils mixed with organic Castor Oil. I'm currently using avocado oil. They all give about the same results for me.

When I cleanse with OCM, it's my massage and relax time, and as I rub it into my skin, I can feel the particles of makeup and dead skin sloughing off. After a lifetime of trying this cream cleanser and that, it's a real departure for me.
