I've recently started taking silica in an effort to improve my hair. I'm not sure if others who are taking this are aware that it can deplete Thiamin levels within the body. This could have risky implications, as it can cause neurological problems, bad memory recall, depression, fatigue etc. So please take care any other ladies out there taking this supplement. I have read that taking 10-50mg of thiamin an hour before or after taking the silica should prevent this problem. I hope it does and it the silica is safe to take.
Anybody know any more about this? |

Camelia, can you provide a link to your source? I did a quick Google search and couldn't find anything pertaining to your topic. |

Horsetail Extract (which contains organic silica) depletes Thiamine, and is used in hair formulas like Viviscal. It can also impact potassium levels.

But BioSil is something something completely different...ch-OSA (choline-stabilized Ortho Silicic Acid). |

There's quite a lot of information about it on the internet. I've been taking a supplement containing horsetail for over a month. I think it has thickened my eyelashes a little but I can't see any thickening of my hair yet. More importantly the constant lower back ache I've had for a long time has practically disappeared so I'm pulled in two directions concerning this. Apparently the organic silica is the only type that is absorbed well by the body.
This is one source:

This one contains a balanced view of the herb horsetail and the type that is most dangerous:
http://www.herbs2000.com/herbs/herbs_horsetail.htm
One weird side effect I've noticed is that whereas usually even a glass of white wine goes straight to my head, I can easily drink more than 2 glasses without any sign of feeling tipsy let alone drunk. I don't know what's going on.
Has anyone been taking silica for a long time without any side effect but with positive benefits? If so what type are you using?
I would be very grateful for any more information on this from a long term user!
Thank you very much. |

Camelia,
thanks for the links....
there are two herbal forums that i can recommend for posting your questions...both are highly populated by herbalists of the sort that are highly connected to the total life force of herbs as healers. i've learned a lot from studying and asking questions on these forums.
one iswww.herbwifery.com.. and the second iswww.susunweed.com
(there is also a website from an herbalist named jim mcdonald that includes links to many good sites to find out about herbs..including herbal list serves, forums etc...it iswww.herbcraft.org..in case you want to take your questions further).
anyway, i'm about to begin to take a silica product (that is organic rather than inorganic.)called Orgono. It's in liquid form..and is penetrable through the skin as well as through the digestive channels..
it's the new 'in' silica in the raw food community..and imo over the years i've really grown to respect this community for the intensity and integrity of their research for the effective and pure products.
in the past i've used Flora bio silica..an aqueous extract of horsetail..but stopped using it because it contained magnesium stearate..and i prefer to use purer products...also i never experienced much of anything, personally, positive or negative with this product..although i know those who have. i took this product for close to a year.
i've also periodically added a bit of horsetail herb to my nettle herbal infusions (it is soooo bitter..and i usually like bitter..but not horsetail!!) and have found it to be even more effective in strengthening my hair than 'straight' nettle infusions. |

jasminerosey, thank you very much for your reply, I'm going to have a good look at those sites. It's the Flora supplement I'm taking right now! Well not today though because I really don't know whether to continue taking it or not if it causes thiamin problems. Plus I've read that it shouldn't be consumed with liqorice and I adore liqorice. By the way, why is magnesium stearate bad? What exactly does it do?
Thanks again for your detailed reply, it's lovely to know that I can log on here and find so many knowledgeable posters. |

Thanks for the links, Camelia. I've been taking BioSil for quite a while, but I don't think I've ever used pure horsetail. |
