Starting this thread following discussions in another topic about doing TCA peels etc to body areas.
I have moderate sun damage to my back arms and chest as a result of many years in the aussie sun. This shows as blotchy freckles and pigment. My back is particularly bad, and many, many treatments with lasers and IPL have improved it, but they leave behind "demarkation" lines which have almost made it look worse.
I have dabbled in all sorts of peels. Various dilutions of TCA, glycolics and more recently and most successfully Lactic acids.
Just thought that anyone else who is interested could chip in here to discuss ideas about tackling this tricky body pigmentation.
cheers

I think this is a very interesting topic. I did see you mention that you would be starting a thread in Secreatly's thread about her Phenol peel.
Just curious, have you tried the obagi system on your body at all, or perhaps that is too expensive?
I will be following your updates. Good luck. |

I have a similar problem with pigmentation issues on the body
I dont know why the skin market hasnt thought of a body peel as lots of people have issues with this
I tried tca and it left with with dark patches io remember using lactic acid and my skin felt and looked lovely so i think i will try and locate a large bottle and do this weekly |

Yes the thing with TCA on the body is that you need to get the strength just right or you will get a burn or no result. It is just very very hard to find the right %.
The Lactic seems way more forgiving. I had a excellent peel by diluting 88% Lactic acid with half distilled water (so 44% I guess) and putting it on and leaving it on. I didn't wash it off at all. I got a lovely medium depth peel. I have also added some lactic acid to a general body wash and use it daily.
I also have an idea of making a mix of TCA and Lactic...have to do some reserach to see if this is workable?
The dermaroller got rid of ALL the pigment on my hands...but didn't work on my arms????
If anyone has any ideas please chip in.

So, lactic acid seems to work for some of you guys?? My chest has horrible sun damage and I'd like to try something there, but my chest is also much more sensitive than other areas. Where do you purchase lactic acid?
Thanks!! |

Several of us get it from the website

I get mine in Australia...so that probably is of little use to you.
Just start with a low dilution. What seems to work best with lactic is a lower concentration left on for longer. It is much much weaker than the other acids though, so buy a stronger % that you can dilute yourself and change the % as you work out what works for you.

I think I might make myself a guinea pig here and do a test of sorts. My back is shockingly pigmented. I think I will take some "before" pics tonight then do quite a strong lactic peel and leave it on if I can tolerate it.
We will see what happens....???

I did "my own" version of obagi..in that I bought cheap retin A and a 4% hydroquinone from Malaysia. I actually never saw any result at all from this. I am not a cautious person at all, but I have got a little worried about now using hydroquinone on a large body area.... |

Snowqueen67,
When you try some of your experiments, please let us know how you do it step-by-step. It'll be interesting to see your results. I'm pretty heavy pigmented all over due to over zealous tanning in my teenage years with no sunscren!! And we all thought we looked so good ... hindsight is definitely 20/20! Thanks. |

Tried taking a photo, but couldn't really get the "blotchiness" to show up well...pushed on anyway...
Showered, scrubbed my back and arms. Diluted my 88% LA to half strength. Applied liberally with a cotton wool pad to my back, arms and chest. Waited for any sensation....got none after 5 mins applied another layer. Waited...still nothing. AH well what the heck poured some straight 88% and applied that to my back and arms only. I am now sitting here 15 mins later and it is stinging/itching like mad. To me this is worse than the burn of TCA. Will see how long I can tolerate it. Have checked and there is no evidence of burning or frosting.
Will let you know how it goes....

Rebecca,
Do you leave the lactic acid on or do you wash it off with water, neutralize it, or what?
I hope you get great results!! Thanks! |

100% correct snow queen
it really does take a lot to get the right percent i have tried so many times sometimes nothing would happen even when i prepped the skin
the last time it burnt my skin and caused loss of pigmentation that has taken years to SLOWLY come back
the lactic is so much better provided its in a high % it does tingle much more i found that tca
bt the skin after is lovely i hope this thread continues as im sure we have a lot we can learn from each other |

Hey guys,
I'm trying to learn a bit about the different types of peels: lactic, glycolic, TCA, etc. and what types would be most effective on various parts of my very heavily pigmented body.
I am currently doing Obagi Nuderm on my face and neck area. I've tried a few times using these products on my chest area as well, but it just doesn't seem to work. This area is extremely sensitive and the Nuderm products cause it to break out. The skin on my chest has heavy sun damage with hypo and hyper-pigmentation. Would anyone have any suggestions as to what may work??
Thanks!! |

Rebecca, How did you survive that 88% dunking? Hope all is well. |

It survived fine...I was waiting for something to report...but not much has happened
The last few days all of the areas have been shedding, just like a white dust...not peeling as such...just a cloud of white stuff when I take of my shirt LOL!
Still I think this is the way to go....I'll try and do this weekly. Perhaps next time I can try and layer the 88% to get a deeper peel. Not sure how to handle the stinging/itching though.
The question about neautralising. Yes, you are supposed to neautralise LA...however as I have been going for 'maximum effect" I have just left it on until I can't stand it.

Yes!! I still have 2 dark patches on my shoulder from a TCA experiement gone bad.
Still, all in all, with using various lasers, sandpaper (gasp)TCA hydroquinone and now Lactic Acid, I think I have slowly improved the worst areas. My aim, next summer is a strapless top...lets see how it goes!

Glad to know you are doing fine, you signed off itching and stinging like mad, thus the concern. Do these peels also improve the overall appearance of your skin, aside from discoloration? |

I have only really just started with the LA. But I would say yes. Whereas TCA would leave my skin kind of "colourless" after the LA is is healthy and pink and glowy. The texture of my chest I noticed today is much better, it was getting quite crepey.
Will keep updating.

Ok Determined, you are funny, lol
Hi Rebecca, Where do you buy your lactic acid? Maybe I could do a weak - weekly application if it improves the overall condition of the skin. Getting rid of crapey is a great side-effect! |

Londongirl....how did you go???
I found some info online about an amazing peel process for the body and posted about it, but didn't get any interest. I'll see if I can dig it up if anyone is interested. It is summer here so I haven't attempted it yet.
